It is the first official ecological encyclopedia that academically explains the ecology of Pokémon.
"Pocket Monsters" attracts many fans all over the world. The new official encyclopedia, "Pokécology", will be released on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025. Pre-orders also began today, Monday, April 21st, 2025 and a teaser site was also unveiled.

This book focuses on the ecology of wild Pokémon. How do over 1,000 types of Pokémon live? They observed and analyzed Pokémon from various perspectives, such as physical characteristics, diet, sleep, connections with other Pokémon, and mobility. They also interpreted the "Pokémon Zukan" that appears in the "Pocket Monsters" series, focusing on the "differences", "similarities", "laws of nature", and "connections" for the ecology of each Pokémon, and provided easy-to-understand explanations.

In this book, the ecology of Pokémon is explained by Yoshinari Yonehara, a Doctor of Agriculture who currently works at The Pokémon Company. In addition, in order to focus on the ecology of this work, the illustrations of Pokémon were drawn in full color to make their characteristics and differences easier to understand. The new illustrations were created by Chihiro Kinoshita, who has illustrated many books on animal ecology.

Both Yonehara and Kinoshita received their doctorates from the Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo, where they studied animal behavior and ecology. Their perspectives on observing the creatures known as Pokémon are very authentic. These two doctors approach the ecology of Pokémon from a new perspective.

ポケモンの⽣態をアカデミックに解き明かす、初の公式⽣態図鑑が登場
世界中で、多くのファンを集める「ポケットモンスター」。その新しい公式図鑑「ポケモン生態図鑑」を、２０２５年６月１８日(水)より発売いたします。また、本日４月２１日(月)より予約を開始し、ティザーサイトも合わせて公開されました。
この図鑑が注目するのは、野生のポケモンの生態。１０００種類を超えるポケモンたちは、いったいどのように生活するのか。体の特徴、食事、睡眠、他のポケモンとのつながり、移動能力など、様々な見地から、ポケモンを観察・分析。「ポケットモンスター」シリーズに登場する「ポケモン図鑑」を読み解き、ポケモンごとに生態の「違い」「共通点」「法則」「つながり」などに注目して、わかりやすく解説していきます。

本作にて、ポケモンの生態を解説するのは、博士（農学）で、現在は株式会社ポケモンに勤める米原善成氏。
また、本作では生態にフォーカスを当てるにあたり、その特徴や違いをわかりやすくするために、ポケモンのイラストはフルカラーで描き下ろした。新イラストを手掛けたのは、多くの動物生態本のイラストを手掛けてきた、きのしたちひろ氏。
米原氏、きのした氏、ともに東京大学大学院農学生命科学研究科で動物の行動や生態を研究して博士号を取得している。ポケモンという生き物を観察する視点は本格的だ。
