While heading to the Grand Festival at the Lakeside Resort, Ash and friends meet Yoshichi who instantly wanted to play with Pikachu after he saw it. After speaking for while, Ash and friends asked if he had any Pokémon of his own. He explained that he left his Magby at a Pokémon evolution shop. Suspicious of the shop, they returned to find that the owners had left and the shop was gone.

With the help of Ash and his friends, Yoshichi was able to track down the thieves who ended up being Team Rocket. Ash and Dawn battled Team Rocket and were able to recover Magby's Poké ball.
