Urara: Urara ran into Hikari in Asatsuki Town, where she had traveled in order to compete in the Asatsuki Town Pokémon Contest. She saw Hikari in the practice yard where she was practicing with her Plusle and Minun. The Cheering Pokémon revived Hikari's childhood fears, who passed out shortly after the two Pokémon shocked her causing her hair to go frizzly and sparkle. Urara was later seen eavesdropping when Hikari was explaining to Satoshi and Takeshi the reason behind her fear for Plusle and Minun, as well as how she got the nickname Pikari when she was little. Upon hearing the story, Urara laughed and started plotting a way to use this information to her advantage.
In the first round of the Asatsuki Town Pokémon Contest, she used her Gabite and Purin for her double appeal. Gabite managed to control Purin's Rollout attack with elegance using its arms, and then used its Iron Tail attack to throw Purin in the air. The collision of Purin's Hyper Voice and Gabite's Stone Edge, as well as the combination of Purin's Gyro Ball and Gabite's Sand Tomb attacks, created sparkling effects that amazed the crowd and the judges. Urara finished her appeal by having Purin spin on Gabite's claw while it was using a Dragon Claw attack, thus ending the appeal with the same pose as when it started. Urara's appeal was well-received by the judges and she made it to the second round of the contest.

Urara's Plusle: Urara's Plusle was first seen in the practice yard for the Asatsuki Town Pokémon Contest alongside Ursula's Minun. Upon seeing it and Minun, Hikari became extremely frightened of them, as the Cheering Pokémon had revived Hikari's childhood fears, and passed out shortly after the two Pokémon shocked her causing her hair to go frizzly and sparkle. It was later revealed that Hikari had developed a fear for Plusle and Minun from when she was still in kindergarten.

Hikari: After arriving in Asatsuki Town for her next Pokémon Contest, Hikari and her friends ran into Urara, who had also traveled there in order to take part in the contest. They saw her in the practice yard where Urara was practicing with her Plusle and Minun. Upon seeing Plusle and Minun, Hikari became extremely frightened of them, as the Cheering Pokémon had revived her childhood fears, and passed out shortly after the two Pokémon shocked her causing her hair to go frizzly and sparkle. When she regained her consciousness, she explained to Satoshi and Takeshi that she had developed a fear for Plusle and Minun from when she was still in kindergarten. One day, the Plusle and Minun she was looking after with Kengo and Yumomi shocked her, the effect to her hair being the same as the one that was caused by the shock that came from Urara's Plusle and Minun. This led to Kengo coming up with the nickname Pikari, as her hair was sparkling. ("Pikapika" is an onomatopoeia for "sparkling".) [In the English dub version, Kenny came up with the nickname Diamond Dandruff, or Dee-Dee for short, after seeing Dawn's sparkling hairdo caused by Plusle and Minun.] Hearing the story, Satoshi, Takeshi, Pikachu and Pochama laughed, but moments later, and after getting serious again, both Satoshi and Takeshi started encouraging Hikari, who promised to put all of this behind her and beat Urara in the Asatsuki Town Pokémon Contest in order to get over her fear for Plusle and Minun.
