Summary
May and Max are watching a Zigzagoon drink water from a river. Max talks too loud, scaring the Zigzagoon away. May tells Max to be more quiet next time. Max points to a group of Stantler. May and Max think that the Pokémon are really cool. A flock of Beautifly fly in the sky. May and Max are happy to see all of the Pokémon in the forest. Ash thinks there is something strange about all the Pokémon.

Max sees a Sudowoodo and Shroomish. Unfortunately, he scares them away because he gets too close to them. May thinks that Max is overreacting. Max tells his sister that looking at Pokémon for the first time is very different than just studying them because you can feel them, smell them, and you can see them breathe. Ash agrees with Max.

Suddenly, they hear a sound from the deeper part of the forest. Up on a rock are three Mightyena. The Mightyena jump down from the rock and they surround Ash and co. Ash looks up Mightyena in his Pokédex. May thinks that Ash should use his "real life experience" and make friends with the Mightyena. Ash disagrees with May. He wants to run, but Brock tells him no. Brock sends out Forretress, May sends out Torchic, and Pikachu is ready to battle. One Mightyena attacks. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but the Mightyena dodges the attack. It hits Pikachu with Tackle. Suddenly, another Pokémon appears with blazing speed. It is Poochyena. Before Poochyena can attack Ash and co., a woman walks up to the group. She says that they are in a restricted area. Ash and co. apologize for trespassing. The woman introduces herself. Her name is Katrina. Ash and co. introduce themselves as well.

Team Rocket are also in the forest looking for Pokémon. However, they haven't found any yet. They are also hungry, and so they name the foods they want to eat. A Murkrow lands on a tree. Jessie then sees a tree full of different Pokémon. Wobbuffet pops out, holding a sign. The sign reads that they are entering a restricted area. Jessie, James, and Meowth are excited by this.

Katrina leads Ash and co. back to her place. She has been taking care of many injured Pokémon. Brock, who is in love again, tells Katrina that he is also a Pokémon Doctor. When Brock becomes love crazy over Katrina, Poochyena tackles him. Katrina scolds Poochyena and tells it to not tackle anymore. Max uses May's Pokédex to looks up Poocyhena. Max thinks that Poochyena will evolve into a Mightyena very soon. Katrina disagrees with Max. She explains to Max that Poochyena was born at the exact same time as the other three Mightyena, and they evolved at the same time awhile ago. Max wonders why Poochyena still hasn't evolved. Katrina has a theory, but she isn't too worried about it. Max is disappointed that Poochyena hasn't evolved. He tells Katrina that Poochyena will be able to be more stronger, and it will be able to take care of itself once it is a Mightyena.

May wonders how her Pokémon will turn out once it evolves. She imagines a big version of Torchic. May pulls out her Pokédex and looks up Combusken. Max can hardly wait for Torchic to evolve because he wants to see a Pokémon evolve. Ash and Brock tells May and Max that evolving a Pokémon takes time and patience. When your Pokémon gets enough experience, then it evolves. May wants to know why Pikachu hasn't evolved yet. Brock explains the whole meaning of evolution and how the Pokémon evolve. From Brock's speech, May and Max now understand how evolution works. Because of this, Max does not want to miss Poochyena evolve. He thinks that giving it a slight push will do the trick. Katrina tells everyone that they can stay at her place for awhile. Brock accepts this.

Max is out in the forest training Poochyena. Poochyena uses Tackle on Torchic. Max tells Poochyena that in order to evolve it has to use different attacks. He says that Bite will do more damage. Poochyena jumps up and prepares for an attack, however Torchic uses Ember on both Poochyena and Max. Then it walks away. Meanwhile, Ash is in the house feeding Pikachu. Max walks up to Ash and asks him if he can borrow one of his Pokémon. May tells Ash not to let Max use a Pokémon because Max will just let it lose on purpose. Ash tells Max that letting a Pokémon lose on purpose isn't the way to get Poochyena to evolve.

Max sits on a rock. He watches Poochyena play with the other Mightyena. He tries to think of an alternative way for Poochyena to evolve. Ash and May walk up to Max. Ash tells Max that some Pokémon just don't want to evolve and that they are happy the way they are. Max is angry and runs in the forest with Poochyena. Katrina walks up to Ash and May. She shows them part of a net, a tool used for capturing Pokémon. This means that there are poachers out in the forest.

Team Rocket have captured many Pokémon in a net. They are celebrating. Suddenly, Meowth sees something from behind the bushes. It is Max and Poochyena. Max tells Poochyena that it will evolve when it starts to use other attacks aside from Tackle. Team Rocket has a plan to help Max.

Max looks for a good opponent for Poochyena. From behind lies a big machine. Max thinks it's a trap, and he begins to walk away from it. Two people walk out. They notice that Max has discovered their machine or their "laboratory." The two people are Jessie and James but in disguise. James tells Max that they are doing some evolution research. They provide a demonstration for Max. Jessie places Meowth in the machine, and James pulls a lever. Within 5 seconds comes a Persian (which is Meowth in a costume). Then they have the "Persian" evolve into many other Pokémon. Because of this, Max thinks the machine is rigged. Jessie thinks that they should evolve Poochyena. She places Poochyena in the machine. The machine explodes and out comes Team Rocket's balloon. Poochyena is in the net with the other Pokémon.

Ash, Brock, May, Katrina, and the three Mightyena run up to Max. Team Rocket says their motto. Then James takes out an arm-like thing. He extends it out and uses it to grab Pikachu. Then they begin to float away in their balloon. Ash and co. chase after Team Rocket. Ash sends out Taillow. Taillow flies up and pecks at Team Rocket, lowering the balloon down. Max calls out to Poochyena. He tells it to bite through the net so that it can save all the other Pokémon. Poochyena hesitates, Max believes that Poochyena can it. Poochyena then uses Bite, and it bites its way through the net. The net breaks and the Pokémon are saved. Taillow has pecked James a lot causing him to lose track of Pikachu. Then Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, and Team Rocket blasts off into the sky.

Max tells Poochyena that it saved the day and that it is already a great Pokémon whether it evolves or not. Suddenly, Poochyena begins to glow, and it evolves into a Mightyena. Mightyena knew how Max felt, and so it evolved for him. Max is very happy that he got to experience evolution. May also got to experience evolution for her first time. Max hugs Mightyena.

Paint Edit

Throughout the entire episode, the video frame was zoomed in and cropped for the dubbed version compared to the Japanese original. This change results in approximately a 10% loss in the overall video frame for this episode.

It is easily spotted in this scene on the right side where Max's hair gets cut off.

May in the English dub says that Max hasn't studied enough whereas Haruka in the Japanese original just states the obvious that Pokémon would look smaller in the Zukan. Max also says he thinks they look bigger than in books whereas Masato says they look bigger than on TV.

Character English Translation Japanese
Max The real-life Pokémon out here seem so much bigger than the ones in books or on the PokéDex. When you see a Pokémon with your own eyes like this, it's so much bigger than when you see one on TV or in the Zukan! ポケモンて テレビや図鑑で見るより大きいね~!!
May What's the big surprise? If you'd studied up you'd know how big Pokémon are out here in the wild. Well yeah, it's obvious the real thing is bigger than it is in the Zukan, isn't it?
Max I have so studied Pokémon and I'll prove it! No, that's not what I meant! そういう意味じゃなくてさ!!

The weights are different units of measurement in the Japanese original and the English dub. The Japanese original uses the metric system and the English dub uses the Imperial system. Max also notes that Sudowoodo are Rock-type, something that Masato doesn't do.

Character English Translation Japanese
Max Zigzagoon like the one we saw at the river are 16 inches tall and weigh 39 pounds. Let's take Zigzaguma as an example. It's 40cm long and weighs 17.5kg. 例えばジグザグマは 高さ40cm 重さ17.5kg。
Max Shroomish are 16 inches tall and weigh 10 pounds. Kinococo is 40cm tall and weighs 4.5kg. キノココは 高さ40cm 重さ4.5kg。
Max And Sudowoodo are Rock-type and are 3 feet 11 inches tall and weigh 84 pounds. Usokkie is 1.2m tall and weighs 38kg. ウソッキーは 高さ1.2m 重さ38kg。

03:15

Script Error

Ash in the English dub talks about winning battles to which Brock mocks him and says he actually has experience with loosing battles. Satoshi in the Japanese original says that being in an area with lots of wild Pokémon awakens his wild instincts to which Takeshi notes that Satoshi operates on instinct rather than thinking things out.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash Or winning battles with your Pokémon at your side. Or rather, since this place in particular has a lot of wild Pokémon, my own wild instincts awaken. ここは 野生のポケモンが 多いしオレの野生本能が…。
Brock Or loosing battles since you have some experience in that area as well! I guess it's because you operate on instinct rather than intelligence, huh, Satoshi? サトシは 知性より 本能だからな。

03:53

Script Error

May tells Ash to use his 'experience' to get out of the situation with the Mightyena in the English dub while Haruka tells Satoshi to use his "wild instinct" (野生本能) to become friends with them. Ash also says they should run away, something Satoshi doesn't suggest to do.

Character English Translation Japanese
May Now's your chance Ash. Use some of that experience you were talking about and go make friends! Hey Satoshi, try using that "wild instinct" you were boasting about to make friends with them. 野生本能で お友達に なってよ。
Ash Actually, my experience is telling me it might be a good time to run. That very same instinct is telling me that's not going to work... その野生本能がムリだって言ってる…。

05:24

Script Error

Takeshi calls Kakuri beautiful while Brock tell her to call her Romeo and doesn't actually complement her.

Brock: And my name is Brock but you can call me... Sweetheart or Romeo or whichever you prefer!
Takeshi: And I go by the name Takeshi. Kakuri-san, how beautiful you are!
タケシ: タケシと 申します。アナタは なんと美しいのでしょう!!
05:35

Scene Cut

The English dub adds a line of dialog in the transition scene. Takeshi in the Japanese original just screams.

Brock: Hey! No biting! Oww!
05:41

Script Error

The Team Rocket dialog for this scene was completely rewriten. Musashi doesn't know where they are and questions the others about their location whereas Jessie seems to know where she is as the woods are supposed to have a lot of Pokémon for them to get.

James' line is removed in the English dub and is replace with more dialog for Jessie instead.

Team Rocket in the English dub then start talking about what they'd like to eat whereas Rocket Gang in the Japanese original just want to get out of the forest because they think the area is creepy. The whole reason they are frightened by the Yamikarasu is really lost in the English dub as there is no sense of being already scared.

Character English Translation Japanese
Musashi These woods are supposed to be full of Pokémon. We've been walking for hours and haven't seen a single one. Just where are we, anyway? ここは どこなのよ?
Kojiro * NO DIALOG FOR JAMES * Good question. さあ。
Nyarth No decent restaurants neither. I haven't the slightest idea. 全然 わからんニャー。
Kojiro At this point I'd settle for a chilidog stand. This place is really creepy, too. 不気味な所だぜ。
Musashi A hot dog. It is. そうねぇ…。
Nyarth Sauerkraut and mustard... Let's hurry up and- こんニャとこ とっとと…。

06:37

Scene Cut

Takeshi's original dialog line was replaced with a dialog line for May in the English dub instead.

English Dub
May: I can't believe how many different Pokémon you're taking care of Katrina.

Japanese Original
Takeshi: So you're the one treating all these Pokémon then, Kakuri-san?
タケシ: 治療は カクリさんが?
06:42

Script Error

Katrina in the English dub says that the Azurill got injured in the woods. This expands upon Team Rocket earlier who thought the woods were creepy. Kakuri in the Japanese original is directly talking to Ruriri to tell it that its almost ready to return to its friends.

Katrina: This little one got injured when it was lost in woods but its almost all better now.
Kakuri: You've become a lot better. You'll get to return to your friends before long.
カクリ:
06:49

Script Error

Brock's line was completely rewritten in the English dub. In the Japanese original, Takeshi is very impressed with Kakuri being the only ranger on the reserve and also a Pokémon Doctor. Takeshi also insists that he helps here. Brock in the English dub just gushes his feelings for Katrina but doesn't complement her on being an amazing Pokémon Doctor and ranger or ask to help out.

Brock: You're the girl I've been looking for! To work alongside and share my dream of caring for and healing Pokémon.
Takeshi: To think you're not only the ranger of a reserve, but a Pokémon Doctor as well...
タケシ:
06:55

Script Error

Katrina then randomly assumes that Brock is a Doctor to which Brock responds by lying with a bunch of credentials some of which are just music related acronym jokes to make it sound like he's a doctor. Kakuri just thanks Takeshi for the complements in the Japanese original.

Character English Translation Japanese
Katrina You're a doctor? What kind? Thank you, Takeshi-kun. ありがとう タケシ君。
Brock Well all kinds. M.D. CD. DJ. Oh, such words of gratitude are- そんな お礼の言葉など…。

07:10

Script Error

Brock in the English dub complements Katrina on her ability to scold Poochyena!?! Takeshi in the Japanese original just wished that Kakuri would hold him like she was holding Pochiena at the time.

Brock: She even knows how to scold beautifully...
Takeshi: Aw, I wish she'd hold me in her arms like that...
タケシ: 抱っこ されたい…。

10:32

Script Error

The whole Takeshi scene in the Japanese original is based on Professor Okido's Pokémon Lecture which is seen at the end of each Japanese episode. That is why Takeshi is dressed up in a lab coat as he is imitating Professor Okido. Takeshi ends off the lecture with a senryu which gets rewritten in the English dub as Brock joking that he's going to give them a test based on his lecture.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock Ready for the test? Well then, here's a poem. ここで一句!
Brock Define Pokémon evolution in an essay of 9000 words. The emotional moment of evolution must not be missed 「感動だ 進化の瞬間 見のがすな」。
Brock Just kidding! That's all for today class. Everyone, get Pokémon! ポケモン ゲットじゃよ~!

11:00

Script Error

The main reason Masato is so insistent to get Achamo to evolve is because he's never seen a Pokémon evolve and he finally wants to see Pokémon evolution occur. This point is completely written out of the English dub dialog for Max and it is infact the whole point of this episode.

Max: Why do you always have to be a big bummer when it's something I want to do?
Masato: But I still haven't seen a single evolution yet!
マサト: だって まだ1度も見てないんだよ!
13:43

Script Error

Haruka points out that Masato has reached the age where kids like to disagree. Ash and May in the English dub just call Max weird.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash That was weird. Oh boy...
May Well he's a weird kid. He's reached that age, I guess.

14:12

Script Error

The Rocket Gang AG tagline was rewritten in the English dub. The Rockets in the Japanese version were also impressed and noted that this was the biggest haul of Pokémon they'd caught in the past few years. James apparently still lives at his mom's house in the English dub.

Character English Translation Japanese
Rockets Oh yeah! We rock! We rock! Yay! A giant catch! ワーイ! 大漁~!!
Jessie This is going to get us that promotion for sure! We just got one of the biggest catches we've made these past few years!
Meowth Or at least a good hardy 'hank you. The boss is sure gonna be pleased with this too! ボスも喜んでくれるニャ!!
Jessie I can buy a new house! We'll be promoted to admins, 幹部昇進!
James I can move out of mom's! become branch directors... 支部長就任!
Rockets Let's party! ...and feel good! いい カンジ~!

14:56

Script Error

Musashi notes that Pikachu is in the area in the Japanese original whereas Jessie is only concerned about the Poochyena in the English dub.

Jessie: And isn't that Poochyena?
Musashi: Pikachu is walking around somewhere in the area...
ムサシ:

16:50

Culture Reference

Jessie brings up Albert Einstein as a point of scientific reference in the English dub to prove her point to Max. She also erroneously calls him the inventor of the lightbulb. Musashi in the Japanese original just points out that science advances really fast these days.

Jessie: Oh sure. That's what they all told Albert Einstein before he invented the lightbulb.
Musashi: Oh, there's no such thing as "impossible" in this day and age. Science advances incredibly fast, you see.
ムサシ: ありえないことは ないのよ!科学の進歩は 速いんだから!!

Max: Edison invented the lightbulb.
Masato: Is that really so?
マサト: ホントかな~?

20:07

Meowth quotes McGruff the Crime Dog famous line "Take a Bite out of Crime" in the English dub.

Meowth: Now that's taking a bite out of crime!
Nyarth: The Pokémon we worked so hard to collect!
ニャース: せっかく集めた ポケモンが~!
