Summary
Our friends have stopped for lunch. Misty tells Ash that he hasn't gotten a badge in a very long time and Ash nearly chokes on his food. Ash tells Misty that he wins his battles with skill. Todd starts to take pictures of Pikachu. Ash tells Todd to stop. Then Todd tells Ash to take the Pokémon League Admissions Exam (I'll call it PLAE). At the PLAE, a guy tells Ash what it's about. He hands Ash a testing number, number 7. Jessie, in dusguise, complains that she didn't get number 7. Ash thinks that she looks familiar. Nurse Joy walks by and Brock immediately falls in love with her. Before Ash can walk away, the man at the counter tells him that he is not allowed to use his own Pokémon. Ash hands his Pokéballs to the man and he leaves. Now they are talking to Nurse Joy. Nurse Joy tells them that she wants to be a Pokémon Master. Then James walks in the doors (he's in disguise too). He sees Ash and quickly walks away. Ash also thinks that he looks familiar. James hands the man his registration form. The man says that he's James and James tells the man to keep quiet. Jessie begins to talk but James tells her to get lost. Jessie gets mad and grabs him by his shirt. At the park James soon realizes that it's Jessie. James tells her that he also wants to become a Pokémon Master. Jessie tells him that she wants to add another talent to her collection. Then Meowth comes and he surprises Jessie and James. They pretend to have a picnic to not notice Meowth, but Meowth just scratches them. James throws Meowth a ball of yarn and then they run for their exam.

The first exam tests a person's knowledge of Pokémon. They're all true or false questions and Ash thinks that it will be easy. At the Magikarp question James gets so angry because of his last event with Magikarp. James notices that Jessie is whizzing through the test. James wonders how she does it but Jessie is just giving each question a "true" answer thinking that she will get half of them right.

The next exam tests a person's ability to recognize Pokémon. The first Pokémon that they have to recognize looks like a ball. Ash thinks it's a Voltorb, James thinks it's a Pokéball (that's not even a Pokémon), and Jessie thinks it's an Electrode. The answer was a Jigglypuff as seen from above. The next Pokémon they had to recognize looks like a swirl. Ash guesses that it's a Poliwhirl, James guesses Omanyte, and Jessie guesses Arbok but the correct answer was Poliwag. Now they have to guess what the tail on the screen belongs to which Pokémon. Ash guesses Charmander but the correct answer was Ponyta. Jessie gets mad because she keeps on getting the wrong answers. She damages some of the equipment and the man expells her. Jessie stomps out of the building and kicks Meowth and tells it that she is going to get her revenge.

The scoreboard finally comes out and they check out the scores. Ash can't find his score but Misty points him to another scoreboard. On it lists all the people who got 0% which includes Ash, Jessie, and James. Todd takes a picture of it and Ash gets mad. James is at the corner of the room saying that he has to now try extra hard for Jessie.

On the third exam is where you get to battle. Nurse Joy is winning with her Squirtle against a Charmander. The man tells Ash and James to select a belt of Pokémon. The twist is that they don't know what Pokémon are inside the Pokéballs. Finally they choose which belt they want and James is up first. James throws a Pokéball at Pikachu pops out. The man sends out a Graveler. James tells Pikachu to use Thunderbolt but the attack does no damage to Graveler. Then Graveler uses Tackle which knocks Pikachu out. James sends out his last two Pokémon which are Ivysaur and Charizard. The man expells James because he sent out two Pokémon at once.

Ash takes the stage next and the man sends out a Flareon. Ash sends out his Pokéball and Weezing pops out. Flareon uses Flamethrower but Weezing dodges the attacks. Then Weezing uses Smog attack. Flareon fights back with Leer and Weezing uses Smokescreen followed by Tackle and Flareon faints. Next the man sends out Jolteon. Ash recalls Weezing back and sends out his next Pokéball which contains Arbok. Jolteon starts off with Agility but Arbok stops Jolteon with Glare. Next Arbok uses Wrap but it gets hurt from Jolteon's spikes. Lastly, Jolteon uses Thunder which makes Arbok faint. Finally, Ash sends out his last Pokéball and he gets Meowth. The man sends out a Vaporeon. Meowth uses Fury Swipes and Vaporeon uses Ice Beam which freezes Meowth and Ash loses the battle. Team Rocket's Meowth scratches Ash and breaks the ice with its face. The man notices that the Meowth talks and wants to capture it. The man throws a Pokéball at it but suddenly, three attacks knock the Pokéball into the air. The attacks came from Charizard, Pikachu, and Ivysaur. Then Team Rocket says their motto. Jessie tells Ivysaur to use Vine Whip, James tells Charizard to use Flamethrower, and Meowth tells Pikachu to use Thunder. Before the Pokémon can attack, the man tells them to about-face. The Pokémon turn around and they attack Team Rocket. Ash tells his Arbok, Weezing, and Meowth to also attack Team Rocket. Then Weezing uses Explosion which sends Team Rocket blasting off again.

Later on, the man tells everyone that Team Rocket's interference has caused everyone to start over again. The man offers Ash another try at the test but Ash tells him that he's better off getting badges from gym leaders. Ash, Misty, and Brock say goodbye to the man and Nurse Joy. Todd comes to Nurse Joy saying that he found the Meowth from Team Rocket. Nurse Joy asks what happened and the man tells them that he has caught his talking Meowth. Meanwhile, Team Rocket angrily rages on about their loses. Jessie asks if Meowth has anything to say and all Meowth says is "Meowth" and Jessie and James just stare at each other.

English Official Summary

Ash signs up to take an exam to be admitted to the Pokémon League. But judging by his awful score on the multiple-choice quiz, it may be a trivial pursuit. He enters the battling portion of the test hoping to raise his score. Also taking the test are Jessie and James, disguised as nerdy students. But the dastardly duo won't stand for doing anything the honest way, and they each get expelled from the test. Ash battles the instructor with a set of three Pokémon randomly assigned for the test. They turn out to be an Arbok, a Weezing, and a Meowth. What were the chances? Ash knows the Poison-type Pokémon's attacks pretty well from being on the receiving end of them so often. He fights a good match, but loses in the end. Just then, Team Rocket bursts in with the Pokémon James was given for the test. These powerful Pokémon will help Team Rocket nab all the Pokémon at the testing facility—or so it thinks. The Pokémon are obedient to the instructor who trained them, and they turn on Team Rocket. With a little help from Ash, Team Rocket is sent blasting off again. The testing instructor offers to let Ash take the test again—he's sure Ash can pass this time—but Ash would rather enter the League his own way, by traveling, collecting badges, and seeing all the world of Pokémon has to offer.

Note

In the English dub of this episode, Todd Snap's original English name was simply "Snap", and the episode was dubbed originally with this in mind. However, his name was later changed to "Todd". The commonly accepted fan reason is that it was due to fears of cereal company Kellogg's being litigious over the cereal character of the same name, resulting in the episode being redubbed. After litigious fears were cleared, his name was retconned to have both names, resulting in "Todd Snap".

The episodes with the version Todd were used in original US broadcast versions, along with streaming versions. The original version with Snap was used in international broadcast versions, and on VHS, DVD, and BluRay releases.

Instances of redubbed lines are below.

Note

Todd Snap's name is redubbed from "Snap" to "Todd" in the English dub.

Original: Hey Snap, make sure to get lots of great shots!
Redub: Hey Todd, make sure to get lots of great shots!
