It has been decided that the music duo Yuzu will be handling "GET BACK", the opening theme to the new Mega Voltage chapter of the anime TV show Pocket Monsters (airs on the TV Tokyo Network every Friday at 6:55pm, officially abbreviated "Anipoke") that premieres April 11th. This is an all new song depicting the strong resolve Liko and the others have, and can be heard in part in the newly released trailer.

The opening theme for Mega Voltage, the new chapter starting Friday, April 11th, 2025, will be... "GET BACK" by Yuzu. We've received comments from both members:

I feel extremely honored to do an opening theme for Pokémon anime, which is loved all over the world by both men and women, boys and girls of all ages. Yuzu debuted in 1997, the same year the Pokémon anime premiered, so it's a collaboration between "contemporaries" so to speak, which made me feel like we and the show shared a deep bond and a sense of destiny. Something entirely new and unexpected was born between Yuzu and Pokémon as we came together under the banner of Get Back. I hope this song will stay with those who love Pokémon and continue to evolve by their side.

When I first got the news, I was very honored, but honestly also very surprised, wondering if Yuzu was really the right choice for this show. Just the fact that many of the earlier theme songs have been very "poppy", as well as emotionally aligned with the anime, made me think a lot about how well Yuzu would be able to align with the anime, as well as whether Pokémon anime fans would accept our song. Yuzu has filled this opening theme with as much respect for Pokémon as they possibly could, and I hope watching and listening to it will bring you a weekly dose of excitement.

1997年に放送がスタートしたアニポケと、同じ年にデビューしたゆず。
ある意味「同期」のコラボレーションで、深い縁や運命を感じました。

大変光栄なお話だ、という気持ちと共に、正直、意外でした。
ゆずでいいんですか!?という気持ちです。
歴代のテーマソングがとてもポップで、しかもアニメに寄り添う様な曲が多かっただけに、はたしてどこまでゆずが寄り添えるか、アニポケファンに受け入れて貰えるだろうかと、とても考えました。

Kitagawa: Hello,
Both: we're Yuzu.
Kitagawa: We're going to be handling the opening theme for the Pocket Monsters TV show.

How did you feel when you learned you had been chosen to handle the opening theme?
Kitagawa: Well... We were actually in the middle of a tour we'd started back in October when we received this news, though I remember my initial reaction was thinking about how great an honor it was. And you know, by complete coincidence, Yuzu and Pocket Monsters happen to be... like, contemporaries,
Iwasawa: "Contemporaries", yeah.
Kitagawa: So this made me really happy.
Iwasawa: Likewise.
Kitagawa: Thank you very much.

What were you trying to express through the music and lyrics?
Kitagawa: Right, so it carries the meaning of "GET BACK", as in "Get back something", "Get back to where you started" and the like. Now, "Get" is a very powerful word in the context of Pokémon, and we ourselves are also reflecting on our origins as Pokémon itself is starting over anew, so you know, it also carries this meaning of like "Get back to the basics".
Iwasawa: This time we teamed up with TeddyLoid-kun, with him making the music and us, like... taking responsibility for the two protagonists' sentiments and emotions.
Kitagawa: That's right.
Iwasawa: I was handling Liko,
Kitagawa: Yes.
Iwasawa: And Kitagawa-san wrote Roy's lyrics,
Kitagawa: Yes.
Iwasawa: So we hope you'll enjoy the slight difference in the lyrics between the first and second verses as well.

What kind of Pokémon-related memories do you have?
Iwasawa: I played the video games all the time!
Kitagawa: Oh, that's right.
Iwasawa: Back in the day, recording used to take forever, you know?
Kitagawa: Yeah.
Iwasawa: So I always used to have a Game Boy Color, or a Game Boy Advance or something in my bag.
Kitagawa: That's right, I remember.
Iwasawa: I played through all the various Pokémon games, constantly sitting there leveling up during downtime.
Kitagawa: I see.
Iwasawa: So that's how good terms I am on with the franchise, and how many memories it has given me. Oh, and I've played the new games too, of course! So I'm around Lv. 100. Thank you very much.

Finally, do you have something you want to tell those who are looking forward to the new opening theme?
Kitagawa: This time you're getting a mixture of the 27 year olds Yuzu and Pokémon. Something entirely new and unexpected was born between Yuzu and Pokémon, and we think that resulted in an interesting song. I hope you'll enjoy it alongside us as you watch the anime.
Iwasawa: Mega Voltage, the new chapter we're handling the opening theme for, will start Friday April 11th with a 1 hour special!
