Ethan is the male protagonist of the Johto Pokémon games (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver).

Game canon

Two years after the Kanto games, Ethan sets off on a journey with his starter Pokémon, takes on the Johto Gym Leaders, takes down a newly revived Team Rocket, and becomes the Indigo League champion. He also then goes to Kanto and defeats all the Kanto Gym Leaders, before climbing up Mt. Silver and taking on the legendary Red_Anime, and winning. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he also is taken back to the past by Celebi where he fights Giovanni, causing him to scrap his plans to revive Team Rocket. Ethan is childhood friends with Lyra, and also is rivals with Silver. If not chosen as a protagonist, he owns a Marill.
Ethan also appears in Pokémon Masters EX. His partner is Cyndaquil, which can evolve. It's revealed he also traveled with Kris_Game.

Pokémon the Series

Ethan had made a cameo in Movie 13, fighting Ash with his Donphan in the opening narration.
Ethan also has another counterpart in the anime named Jimmy Yoshi, who is the protagonist of "The Legend of Thunder".

Pokémon Generations

In Pokemon Generations, he appears as the canon protagonist, helping Lance take down Team Rocket.

GOTCHA!

Ethan makes a cameo in GOTCHA, fighting Red atop Mt. Silver with his Ampharos.
