Wallace is a Contest Master and a Gym Leader.

Wallace battled against Ash Ketchum in the middle of the street in Lilycove City during the time that Ash Ketchum was participating in the Pokémon World Championships competition. Ash initially didn't know who he was but he reminded him of the contest that Dawn and May participated in. He told Ash that he'd been following his progress in the PWCS and he thought it was surely fate that they met and suggested a battle. Ash was in a hurry to see the Lilycove City Pokémon Contest that Chloe Cerise was participating in but once Wallace said that he was on par with the Champion of the Houen region, Steven Stone, Ash couldn't refuse to battle! Most of the battle was not shown but Wallace was defeated and he gave Ash Ketchum a Rain Badge.
