The episode started with the usual preview clips, which announced that today's episode will be a Pokémon movie special featuring SCANDAL as guests, a showcase of famous move scenes and information on the new movie tie-in video game.
Taka then introduced the show, and asked if the other hosts were fired up, which they were. He then said his usual line of telling Shoko-tan she looks cute today, and she replied that that line was getting pretty routine now. Toshi then said they'd have some cute guests on today too, and introduced the members of SCANDAL, the 4-member girls' band singing "Meteor Shower at Dawn", the theme song for The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie. The three members we have as guests for this episode are HARUNA (vocals & guitar), RINA (drums and vocals) and MAMI (guitar and vocals). Toshi asked them if they liked Pokémon, HARUNA replying that they love it, and RINA adding that they're part of the "Pokémon generation"; Pokémon has been there all throught their lives ever since kindergarten. She also adds that the first movie she ever saw in her life was a Pokémon one. Taka says that's really cute, Toshi tells him not to fawn over their guests like that, and Taka says he was actually talking about Toshi.
Next up is the PokéTV Animation segment, where today's episode is Pocket Monsters Episode 30,
Do Coil Dream of Electric Mice!?. Shoko-tan explains the basic plot of the episode: After the group's arrival in Gunjo City, Pikachu get sick, and then the power goes out during its treatment at the Pokémon Center, prompting Satoshi and friends to visit the power plant to see what happened... where they run into something scary. The summary makes Taka really excited to see the episode, and he starts it right away.
After the episode ends, Taka expresses his dislike of the unfriendly Joy with his classic "No no no!" skit, which the three SCANDAL members go on to imitate, much to everyone's amusement.
PokéTV Challenge
Next up is the PokéTV challenge segment. Today's first challenge is an installment of the
"Think Clearly Quiz! PokéRiddle". The narrator explains the basic rules, that all 7 contestants must manage to solve the given riddle to complete the challenge, and Toshi introduces the prize: If the challenge is completed, one lucky viewer will get 20 packs of cards from the Pokémon Card Game XY expansion
Wild Blaze.
The riddle was as follows (note: this riddle requires an understanding of the Japanese language and can not be solved by reading the English translation alone):
As Satoshi was walking down the street, he came across the poster in the picture. What did it say? (サトシが道を歩いているとこんな貼り紙を見つけました この貼り紙にはなんと書いてあるでしょう?) |
What is the English name for the number 2? (数字の2を英語で言うと?) Spoiler: Click to show! |
"Way to School (通学路 tsuugakuro)" If 2 is read as the English "two", or rather its Japanese approximation pronunciation "tsuu", this sounds like "The 2 is black" (2が黒 tsuu ga kuro) Spoiler: Click to show! |
Shoko-tan immediately guesses the answer is "Pocket Monsters Black 2", but after she's told that is wrong, none of the others manage to think of anything, and Toshi gives them the hint early. After the get the hint, all the participants hit upon the correct answer fairly quickly, completing the challenge.
The next challenge is
"Let's Pinpoint the Exact Pokémon". The narrator explains the rules: Each of the 7 participants will select one Pokémon from a given group of 20, and if the combined weight of these 7 Pokémon ends up being between 290 and 300 kg, the challenge is completed. The 20 Pokémon can be seen in the pictures below. Toshi then introduced the prize: If the challenge is completed, one lucky winner will get a set of four MonColle figures; Mega Fushigibana, Mega Lizardon X, Mega Lizardon Y and Mega Kamex.
Robin is first, wanting to get a Pokémon that's neither too light nor too heavy, and picks Chigoras, which he estimates is about 40kg. It turns out to weigh just 26, but he's pleased enough with that choice. Next up is MAMI, who starts wondering about Coil and Rarecoil's weights, eventually settling on trying Coil, which she guesses is about 15kg based on its size and Steel type. Its actual weight is 6kg, much lighter than anyone expected, and only bringing the total to 32 kg. Next is Yukito, who wants to find something heavy to get the total weight up a bit. He wonders about Nassy and Lizardon, eventually settling on Nassy, estimating it to weigh around 45kg. He misses the mark completely, as it actually weights an entire 120kg. The group agrees this is actually fine, since they'll still need an additional 148kg after this. Shoko-tan is next, and suggests that if they all pick light Pokémon now, the final player can choose a heavy one. She chooses Yancham, estimating it at roughly 10kg. She's pretty spot on, its actual weight being 8kg. Next is RINA, who wants to pick something a bit heavier, gong for Mega Kucheat, which she estimates weights about 50kg. She misses the mark, it actually weighing 23.5kg, but the others are fine with that. Taka is next, with 116.5kg left before they hit 300. Taka says he'll try to find a Pokémon that weighs around 100kg. He goes for Kirikizan, which weights 70kg, which the group is happy about. The final player is HARUNA, and Toshi points out that she needs to find a Pokémon that weighs between 36.5 and 46.5kg to complete the challenge. She considers Dotekkotsu, but decides against it since she's not sure if the iron bar it carries would add to the weight or not, and goes for Nidangiru instead. Unfortunately, it only weighs 4.5kg, meaning the total weight ended up being too low and the challenge is lost. Toshi then reveals that Dotekkotsu weighed 40kg, and if she had chosen that as originally planned, she'd have won.
Pokémon Movie Quiz
Toshi and Shoko-tan introduce the next segment, the "7 High Points of Pokémon Movies as Given by Pokémon Movie Fans Quiz". The rules are explained: Kids around the city have been interviewed about what they look forward to in a Pokémon movie, and their replies have been sorted into 7 broad answers. The PokeTV team, consisting of Robin, Yukito and Taka, and the SCANDAL team, consisting of HARUNA, RINA and MAMI, will now alternate between trying to guess what these 7 broad answers are. The first team to guess 4 correct answers will win a special "Cocoon of Destruction" trophy.
The SCANDAL team goes first, and HARUNA guesses one of the answers is "Parents and their children can enjoy them together", which unfortunately wasn't one of the given answers, though Toshi points out that they're of course right about that being a high point as well.
Next is the PokéTV team, and they guess
"Pokémon we haven't seen before appear in the movies" being one of the answers, which is correct. For the last 16 years, entirely new Pokémon, including many legendary Pokémon and mythical Pokémon, have appeared for the first time in a theatrical movie, including Lucario, Latios, Latias, Shaymin, Deoxys, Entei and more. In "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie", we will meet the new Pokémon
Diancie, who will travel together with Satoshi and his friends. What kind of role will she play in the movie?
With the PokéTV team in the lead, it's once again the SCANDAL team's turn, with RINA guessing
"Intense battles" is one of the given answers, which is correct. The Pokémon movies have always had amazing battle scenes in them, with the fight between the Pokémon referred to as gods in 2009's
Arceus - Towards the Continuum of Conquest and the battle etwen Mewtwo and the red Genesect in 2013's
Extremespeed Genesect: The Awakening of Mewtwo being singled out as the best. In "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie", the Destruction Pokémon
Yveltal and the Life Pokémon
Xerneas will appear before us. What kind of battle will unfold between these two legendary Pokémon?
The PokéTV team's next guess is
"You receive special Pokémon as gifts", which is once again correct. Every year, there is one special Pokémon given out with the pre-order tickets and another special Pokémon given out in the movie theaters. This year, those who buy a pre-order ticket will receive the mythical Pokémon
Darkrai, while all those who go see the movies in theaters will receive the mythical Pokémon
Diancie, the star of "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie". This Diancie comes with the exclusive move Diamond Storm, a handy move that hits multiple opponents at once.
SCANDAL is next, MAMI guessing one of the high points is that there's actually two movies, hitting the fourth given answer,
"The Co-Feature". Every year, a short filled with cute Pokémon is shown as a co-feature to the feature film. This year, the short is titled "Pikachu, What Kind of Keys are These?". In this short, Pikachu and the other Pokémon use the keys carried by the Pokémon Cleffy to go on adventures through mysterious worlds where mythical Pokémon live. What kind of encounters await them there?
The PokéTV team next guess is "the original stories in the movies", which is close enough to one of the actual answers,
"Touching stories", to be accepted as correct. The Pokémon movies have always had powerful, emotional stories centered around the friendship between humans and Pokémon, with one of the greatest being Darkrai sacrificing itself in the battle against Dialga and Palkia for the sake of the humans who saw it as a threatening monster in 2007's
Dialga VS Palkia VS Darkrai. Another scene that brought many to tears was Satoshi's desperate struggle to save Victini in 2011's
Victini and the Light Hero Reshiram / Victini and the Dark Hero Zekrom. "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" will be a story about Satoshi, Diancie and their friends' journey to find the Pokémon Xerneas, which is said to possess sacred power. Two thieves who want Diancie's powers for themselves stand in the way, and eventually even the Destruction Pok´mon Yveltal halt their progress. How will this end?
The movie's production staff visited the world's second largest country, Canada, to gather reference material for the movie, and Director Yuyama explains in an interview that Canada was chosen because it has many cities with a European atmosphere to them, along with abundant, varied nature with lots of forests and lakes, which are all things he wanted to include in this year's movie.
SCANDAL is next, and as the performers of this year's theme song, they guess one of the high points is to sing along to the movie's theme song in the theaters. Indeed,
"The music" was one of the given answers. As already mentioned, the theme song for "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" will be SCANDAL's "Meteor Shower at Dawn". HARUNA explains that the song is a fun pop song that embodies how enjoyable a journey is, and RINA adds that when they heard that Diancie's power is to create diamonds, they made sure to include the word "diamond" in the lyrics to create a further connection between the song and the movie.
Toshi says there's only one high point left to guess, and that the score is now 3-3 with the PokéTV team being the next to guess. If they guess right, they win! The team's guess is
"Extravagant Voice Actors", which is indeed the final answer. The Pokémon movies have always contracted famous celebrities to play the various new main characters and Pokémon, and this year's movie is no exception. The ninja thief Riot will be played by Koichi "Yama-chan" Yamadera in his 17th Pokémon movie in a row. The female thief Marilyn will be played by the popular actress Rika Adachi, while the father and daughter duo helping Satoshi and his friends on their way, Algus and Miriss, will be portrayed by Reiji Nakagawa from the comedy duo Nakagawa-ke and our very own Anchor Shoko-tan in her 8th Pokémon movie in a row! Finally, the legendary Pokémon Xerneas will be played by legendary screen actress Yoshiko Mita, who has more than 60 movies on her resume. In addition, the popular idol Mayu Watanabe from AKB48 will be narrating the co-feature "Pikachu, What Kind of Keys are These?".
Since the last answer was correct, Toshi announces the PokéTV team as the winners of the quiz, and hands over the Cocoon of Destruction tropy, but Taka asks to get a closer look and pulls off the wrapping paper obscuring the top of the trophy, revealing it to be an old trophy Taka won in a golf tournament.
The Thieves and the 1000 Pokémon
The narrator then announces a new, completely free video game based on the movie. It's called "The Thieves and the 100 Pokémon", and features both the movie characters Marilyn and Riot and a story that ties into the movie. In the game, you use the Nintendo 3DS Streetpass function to assemble an army of Pokémon you use to defeat your in-game enemies. The game will be available via the Nintendo 3DS eshop between June 5th and September 30th. Further information will be made available at a later date.
The Lizardon Mega Battle
As Toshi is about to end the episode, Robin interrupts, saying he has something to show them. He then pulls out a Pokémon Card Game card,
XY promo card 048: Mafoxy EX, a special holofoil card given out to all participants at the official "Lizardon Mega Battle" tournament. Robin explains that he went to that tournament and made a report from it, then starts his video.
Before his segment starts, however, we get a new segment where Yukito and AD Pikachu go to a 7-Eleven to receive the special Darkrai you get with the special pre-order movie ticket. First, they get a special pre-order movie ticket and the Darkrai Present Guide that coms with it from the store. Next, they start up their Pocket Monsters X/Y game at a place where one can connect to the Internet, which can be be done right there in the store thanks to the handy 7-Spot hotspot service they have. Next, they choose the "Mystery Gift" option from the game's title menu and enter the password found on the special pre-order ticket. Finally, they start the game and talk to the woman in blue now present at the Pokémon Center to receive the Darkrai. This Darkrai even comes with the powerful move Phantom Force that hits even if the opponent uses moves like Protect, which Darkrai can't normally learn.
Finally, Robin's report from the Lizardon Mega Battle starts. The "Lizardon Mega Battle Eastern Japan Tournament" was an official Pokémon Card Game tournament held at Pacifico Yokohama over two days, Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th. The four top players from this tournament, along with the four top players from the upcoming "Lizardon Mega Battle Western Japan Tournament" will continue on to the Japanese Championships, and the top four players from
that will win entries to the Pokémon World Championships 2014 in Washington D.C. as Japanese representatives. Robin shows up to see long lines, and asks some kids in the line if they're going to participate, and they reply that they didn't pre-register, but they're hoping to register on the site, and it is explained that in addition to those who registered online, people who show up at the tournament can register on the spot as long as there are still positions open, which is what most of the people are standing in line for. Robin reveals he brought his own deck and intends to participate too, and the kids in line instruct him to go to the end of the line and not try to skip.
The tournament itself started at 9:40am with the B Division, for middle schoolers and older, which of course incudes Robin. The tournament system is then explained. Each division starts with "Preliminary League Matches", where the players are divided into groups of four that will play each other in a round-robin series of matches. The winner from each of these groups of four will then go on to the Tournament Preliminaries, and the 16 best from these will continue on to the tournament proper. Robin's strategy is to go on the offense with powerful Pokémon EX cards. In his first match, he uses Yveltal EX's damaging "Evil Ball" attack, which deals an addition 20 damage for each energy on both players' Pokémon, leading him to victory. He wins his second match the same way, doing great in his very first tournament. His third opponent has won both his earlier matches too, and counters Robin's strategy by using the Kaenshi card from the new Wild Blaze expansion, which Ability "Intimidating Mane" prevents all damage from an opponent's Basic Pokémon, which all Pokémon EX are. Robin ends up losing agaisnt this overwhelming opponent, and thus fails to continue on from the initial league matches.
Next, it's time for the A division, for grade schoolers and younger, and Robin spots several participants from both last year's WCS and the Pokémon Dragon King Match finals among the players. The tournament finals take place the next day, with the ultimate winner being 10 year old Hitoshi Ohmura, who is participating in his very first official tournament. Together with the three runner-ups, 10 year old Yui Kaizaki, 11 year old Rina Maruyama and 8 year old Tatsuya Kawamoto, he will go on to the Lizardon Mega Battle Japanese Championships in Osaka, where he will compete for the championship. The Lizardon Mega Battle Japan Championships will be held at the Pokémon Center Osaka June 7th and June 8th 2014.
