Press Release - The Pokémon Company International Names Wicked Cool Toys as Master Toy Licensee

The Pokémon Company International Will Also Become a Strategic Investor in the Innovative and Growing Toy Company

Building on its mission to bring the best Pokémon experiences to fans around the world, The Pokémon Company International announced the appointment of Wicked Cool Toys as master toy licensee for the globally popular Pokémon brand, starting in July 2018. Wicked Cool Toys will have the rights to manufacture and market action figures, play sets, plush, roleplay items, and other toys based on the hit Pokémon animated series in worldwide markets, excluding regions in Asia where the brand is managed by The Pokémon Company International’s parent organization, The Pokémon Company.

“Wicked Cool Toys is a growing company, and we’re thrilled to build a strategic partnership with them through both collaboration and financial investment.”

“Pokémon is one of the most beloved entertainment properties in the world, and Wicked Cool Toys is thrilled to become part of that legacy,” said Michael Rinzler, co-president of Wicked Cool Toys.

“We can’t wait to deliver innovative and fun toys that embody the joy of Pokémon to kids and the brand’s millions of passionate fans around the world,” said Jeremy Padawer, co-president of Wicked Cool Toys.

The Pokémon Company International also announced it has become a strategic investor in Wicked Cool Toys and will have a seat on the toy company’s board of directors. This new partnership will allow for enhanced collaboration in the development of Pokémon toys with the growing toy company. The investment in Wicked Cool Toys is in line with the strategic partnership approach The Pokémon Company International engaged in with Niantic Inc., the developers and publishers of Pokémon GO.

“Toys are a major part of Pokémon’s mission to bring the fun and joy of the brand to kids and fans around the world, and we’re excited to welcome Wicked Cool Toys to the Pokémon family as its master toy licensee,” said Colin Palmer, vice president of Marketing & Licensing at The Pokémon Company International. “Wicked Cool Toys is a growing company, and we’re thrilled to build a strategic partnership with them through both collaboration and financial investment.”

TOMY will continue to be a key licensing partner for the Pokémon brand and will produce select items as well as products inspired by Pokémon video games, such as the popular Pokémon Z-Ring, which interacts with the mega hits Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, currently available for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

The development of Pokémon toys from Wicked Cool Toys will begin immediately, with the first products expected to arrive at retail locations in fall 2018.

THE POKÉMON COMPANY INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES COLLABORATION WITH FRENCH KIDS FASHION RETAILER LA COMPAGNIE DES PETITS

London, UK— 21 April 2017 —The Pokémon Company International announced today that it has entered into a major collaboration with quality French children’s fashion brand La Compagnie des Petits, which will see a dedicated fashion collection for girls and boys launched across all stores in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg in May 2017.

Following on from last year’s record-breaking success of the Pokémon franchise, the new line will be promoted in stores starting on 2 May and will launch 12 May. The summer collection for boys and girls comprises over 20 different products including T-shirts, sweatshirts, bottoms, shorts, cardigans, hoodies, pyjamas and accessories. La Compagnie des Petits will provide the collection with exceptional window visibility, with products and banners taking over two windows in each store for two weeks starting from launch. The collaboration will last for a year, with a separate collection launching in the autumn.

Mathieu Galante, Senior Market Development Manager Europe for The Pokémon Company International, says: “We are delighted to be teaming up with La Compagnie des Petits for this major collaboration which will cement Pokémon’s fashion profile in France and the surrounding countries. Pokémon’s apparel ranges are flourishing across Europe at the moment, and this collaboration follows hot on the heels of highly successful partnerships with Zara and Undiz.”

The global phenomenon of Pokémon was first launched in Japan in 1996 as a role-playing game for Nintendo’s Game Boy system and reached the United States and Europe in 1998–99. The first generation of Pokémon games introduced the original 151 Pokémon. Today the Pokémon universe includes more than 800 Pokémon that players can catch, trade, and battle against their opponents in the quest to become the best Pokémon Trainer.

Pokémon has since grown into one of the most popular entertainment properties in the world. It is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, with more than 280 million video games sold worldwide. In addition, 21.5 billion TCG cards have been shipped to 74 countries in 11 languages, and over 450,000 players take part in Pokémon events every year. There are also more than 900 episodes of the animated TV series, about to debut its 20th season on Gulli.

The Pokémon Company International is constantly innovating, with exciting new products such as Pokémon GO and the hugely successful Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon video games for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. With a raft of new licensing deals, retail promotions, collaborations, and promotional partnerships due to be announced in the near future, 2017 is set to be another bumper year for Pokémon.
According to the April 2017 Volume 20 Number 2 Issue of License! Global Top 150 Global Licensors, The Pokémon Company International is now the 19th most profitable retail licensor worldwide selling over $3.3 billion USD a year in licensed products worldwide. The 20th Anniversary campaign in 2016 certainly helped its sales as it greatly surpassed its $2 billion USD and 34th place in 2015. Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sun and Moon also helped the brand. To put this incredible achievement into perspective, The Pokémon Company International has now passed major companies such as: Ford, the NBA and Playboy for sales and is just behind the NFL and GM.

License! Global Top 150 Global Licensors Report - THE POKÉMON COMPANY INTERNATIONAL

Pokémon enjoyed an incredibly strong year at retail in 2016, which marked the brand’s 20th anniversary. The milestone, which recognized the first introduction of Pokémon video games 20 years ago, catapulted the perennially popular brand into the global spotlight and kicked off with the first-ever Pokémon Super Bowl commercial. The company also introduced the mobile game “Pokémon Go,” which became a global phenomenon and was downloaded 650 million times.

Pokémon followed this success with “Pokémon Sun” and “Pokémon Moon” for the Nintendo 3DS, which became the third best-selling Nintendo 3DS titles of all time, adding to the 280 million Pokémon video games already sold. The Pokémon trading card game continues to be popular with 21.5 billion cards shipped globally as of 2016, and was the No. 1 selling toy in the strategic card games subclass. Pokémon animation aligned with Disney XD as its new U.S. broadcast partner.

The Pokémon animated TV series includes more than 900 episodes spanning 20 seasons and is licensed for broadcast in more than 160 countries, as well as on a variety of VOD platforms around the world. In 2017, the award-winning “Pokémon Go” mobile game will continue to receive ongoing updates with new characters, seasonal in-game events and ongoing support from promotional collaborations with Sprint and Starbucks in the U.S.

The latest TCG expansion, Pokémon TCG: Sun and Moon, launched in North America and Europe in February, the first of four expansions that will launch quarterly. The 20th season of the Pokémon animated series, titled “Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon,” will debut in 2017, as will the 20th animated Pokémon movie, and production will begin on Detective Pikachu, the first live-action Pokémon movie. Additionally, the Pokémon Company will continue to introduce new experiences for the brand across mobile and core gaming, animation, TCG, licensed products including toys, apparel and more.
