Benny explained to Ash Ketchum and his friends that he loved his Wobbuffet but he wanted to know what it was like to raise different kinds of Pokémon. After seeing Ash's Tauros win against Fernando's Tauros, Benny thought he should try and trade his Wobbuffet for Ash's Tauros but Ash Ketchum insisted he wasn't trading it. Benny then tried to trade for a Scyther but after the trainer saw Benny's Wobbuffet, he outright refused. Benny was a bit depressed that he couldn't trade his Wobbuffet but he showed his optimistic side by telling his Wobbuffet that it was still a great Pokémon. Kasumi then said that she and her friends would help Benny find someone to trade his Wobbuffet with.

While looking for trade partners, Ash Ketchum called Benny's Wobbuffet "the greatest Sonansu in the world!" and a really obedient and nice Pokémon. Ash Ketchum and his friends managed to convince an Odoshishi Trainer but just as they were about to trade, the Odoshishi Trainer decided that he wanted a flying Pokémon instead.

Jessie landed near the official trade station after James and the Magikarp Salesman came running through. Benny wanted to trade his Wobbuffet for a stronger Pokémon but Jessie accidentally traded her Lickitung for Benny's Wobbuffet after her Poké ball fell out of her pocket and onto the machine and she picked up the wrong Poké ball.
