Location Scouting Report #2: Baptism by Fiery Heat and the Marble Mosque

After an 11 hour 30 minute plane trip, the scouting team finally arrived in Dubai.
The local time at their arrival was 6:15am.

The instant we exited the airport, the sunlight hit us with such intensity it felt like our skin was being scorched!
It's still early morning, but the temperature was already so high it felt like we were in a sauna!
This is when really hit us that we had truly come to a desert country.
In order to avoid the heat, we immediately headed for the air-conditioned bus!
The first day of the scouting had started.

The bus followed the highway towards Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As we were driving along, the "Burj Khalifa" soon came into sight through the window!
The bus drove through the skyscraper-lined urban center of Dubai for a little bit, but soon set off to the undeveloped semidesert. And after a short drive through that, it arrived in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Unlike Dubai, which has developed thanks to trade and tourism, Abu Dhabi has become prosperous through its oil resources.

Abu Dhabi is also an active player when it comes to countermeasures against global warming, as we could tell from the many green trees we could see through the windows.
Looking at this scenery through the windows of an airconditioned bus almost made us forget we were in a desert country.

The scouting team's first destination was the "Sheikh Zayed Mosque".

This is said to be the largest mosque in the world, and feels almost like a marble palace.
We stepped out of the bus, taking in the majesty of the mosque, when... Ow, the heat!

As we exited the bus, Yuyama's glasses fogged up and the thermometer showed almost 40 degrees Celsius!
Again, it was still morning, but the heat and humidity was already well beyond what you'd consider an extremely hot day in Japan.
And the temperature just seemed to rise more and more throughout the day all the way until the afternoon...

We firmly inscribed our guide's instructions to "Always carry water with you" into our minds, then set off for the mosque!

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque was made using both traditional Islamic design and modern architectural technology.
It's a relatively new building, created during the turn of the century.
Known as the world's largest mosque, it's about the size of three soccer fields and has room for 40 000.
This is one of the few mosques in the world to admit non-Muslims, and it has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in Abu Dhabi.

That said, this is still a place of worship.
Shoes are forbidden, so all visitors are required to place their shoes in the provided shoe rack before entering the building.
Likewise, women are required to wear black ethnic costumes called "Abaya" to conceal their skin and hair.
Our guide was familiar with this practice and put on her abaya in no time.

The extravagant appearance of the mosque isn't just limited to its exterior.
As we entered the building, we were greeted by an enormous chandelier.
Not only that, but a massive Persian carpet, said to be the largest in the world, spread out across the entire floor.
The absolutely stunning floral pattern brightened up the entire hall!

When we looked closer at the carpet, we could see an elevated portion in the form of a line, which practitioners line up against to perform Salāt, Muslim prayer.
When lined up here, they face in the direction of Mecca, the holy place of Islam.

You can't fully understand something without trying it, so after hearing these explanations, Director Yuyama attempted such a prayer himself.

The official Pokémon movie website has added a new blog site where background information on the movie and other similar material will be posted. Translations of the currently added entries follow:

Location Scouting Report #1: To the Desert City

Pokémon the Movie XY 2: "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa" premieres this summer.
It's set in "Désser City", a desert city.
We wanted Desser City to be an urban city lined with tall, modern buildings despite being surrounded by desert.

The place Director Yuyama chose to collect material from for this movie was "Dubai".
Dubai is a big city located in the middle of a flat desert, overlooking the Persian Gulf!
It's a leading city in terms of both trade, transport and tourism and is lined with huge skyscrapers, including the famous "Burj Khalifa", the tallest building in the world.

But what kind of journey did we have while location scouting?
If you read this report while picturing the scenes you've seen from "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa", you might enjoy the movie even more.

Before we set off to Dubai, let's talk a little about the city:

Dubai is one of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The UAE is what we call a "federal state", a country that consists of a total of 7 individual emirates, including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Dubai holds world records in a number of fields!
In addition to being the location of the world's tallest building, as mentioned earlier (the Burj Khalifa), it also has the world's largest fountain, the world's largest artificial island, and the list goes on...!
It takes advantage of being the best in the world at so many things and has become a global tourist destination and a major resort city.

"A dazzling city-state filled with skyscrapers, Dubai can proudly proclaim itself the single most prosperous place in the Middle East (source: Wikipedia)"

Wow, that's so cool!
It's a desert metropolis.

The scouting team, led by Director Yuyama, set off for Dubai in mid-September, while the previous movie, "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie" was still screening in theaters.
At 30 minutes past midnight, they boarded Flight EK313 from Haneda to the Emirates for their approx. 11 hour 30 minutes ride.

They arrived at Dubai International Airport at 6:15am local time, nearly exactly on schedule.

The Guest Voice Actors for Pokémon the movie XY: "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa" Have Been Revealed

The Guest Voice Actors for the feature film "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa", which stars Satoshi and the mythical Pokemon Hoopa and which features the most intense battle between legendary Pokémon so far, have been announced!

Of the two siblings that grew up together with Hoopa, the older brother Barza will be played by Tatsuya Fujiwara, while his younger sister Mary will be played by Shoko Nakagawa.
Also, Koichi Yamadera makes his return for the 18th movie in a row, playing Hoopa's recently revealed true form, "Hoopa (Unbound Form)"
As an additional surprise, judoka Shinichi Shinohara will be playing Hippopotas, the Pokemon Satoshi and the others encounter in the desert!

Add in Mizuki Yamamoto, who has already been announced as the short's narrator, and we have a unique lineup of extravagant voice actors to hype up this summer's movie!

Comments from the Voice Actors
Image Tatsuya Fujiwara

While I was very happy to be offered a voice role in a time-honored and popular movie series like this, I was so worried if I'd be able to deliver that I had to ask the producers again whether they were really okay with me doing it. I hope to portray Barza in a way that lives up to the expectations of Pokémon fans and that does the world of the movie justice.
Image Koichi Yamadera

I have played a number of humans and Pokémon in the movies before, but this time I get to play the immensely powerful star Pokémon! It's an incredibly important role, so even though I get to play in these movies every year, I want to go back to the basics and make a fresh approach to it. I'm also looking forward to working together with Kugimiya as she plays Hoopa's confined form.
Image Shoko Nakagawa

Mary is a girl with a firm personality who grew up together with Hoopa and watches over it with a kind disposition. Her emotions throughout the movie span the entire range from cheery and innocent laughter to complete distress, and while I've played a large variety of roles throughout the 9 movies I've been in, this one stands out as a particularly difficult one on paper. So far in my life, I have laughed, been amazed, been excited, been touched, cried and screamed together with Pokémon; I'm going to channel all these emotions into this voice role.
Image Shinichi Shinohara

My first reaction was "Why me!?" (laughs). To think that I will be acting in a Pokémon movie! I'm very honored. This is something I can brag to my kids about. I am a man that knows nothing but judo, but if it's to bring smiles to children all over Japan, I will also approach voice acting with the spirit and force of an Osotogari. Please look forward to my appearance on the big screen. I'm gonna do this!

Story

One hundred years ago, the desert city "Désser City" got severely damaged in a battle between Pokémon. The battle was started due to one specific Pokémon.
However, the Pokémon got sealed by someone, and the city went back to being as peaceful as ever, a state it still is in today.

As Satoshi, Pikachu and the others continue their journey, they encounter the mythical Pokémon Hoopa, who carries "rings that can summon anything and everything", and a girl named Mary who takes care of Hoopa.
The mischievous Hoopa starts summoning all kinds of things from its rings, including its favorite food, donuts, to everyone's surprise and enjoyment.

Ever a prankster, the simple-minded and innocent Hoopa starts referring to Satoshi and Pikachu as "Saton" and "Pikan". It quickly befriends the group, and they all decide to travel together.
Once they arrive in Désser City, Satoshi and the others meet Mary's older brother, Barza.

However, something seems off about him. On a closer look, he's holding the "Prison Bottle" that's said to have sealed the Pokémon that once destroyed the city!
An evil air drifts out of the bottle, eventually turning into a huge shadow. The shadow gradually becomes visible; It is Hoopa's original "Unbound Form": "Super Hoopa"!

The Pokémon that went on a rampage 100 years ago was Super Hoopa!
Hoopa's original power got sealed in the bottle, but over this long period of time, this immense power has changed into "Rage" and ultimately got reborn as the shadowy Super Hoopa.

The unbound Hoopa goes on a rampage, calling forth legendary Pokémon from its 6 rings! Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina and Kyurem...
This will put the city in extreme danger. In order to protect the city, Hoopa makes more legendary Pokémon "Appear!" from its rings!

This truly is "Legend VS Legend"! A battle that tears the earth to shreds, splits the sea and even distorts space!
Will Satoshi and his friends manage to protect Désser City alongside the legendary Pokémon Hoopa made "Appear!"? And how will the fight between Hoopa and Super Hoopa end!? The most fierce battle in Pokémon movie history is about to begin!

In January 2014, she was chosen to receive iTunes Music Store's promotional award "New Artist 2014". On February 5th, she released her very popular second single, "Brand New Day". This song was used in a TV commercial for the Nissen, 2014 Spring collection, which Yasuda also personally appeared in.

On October 8th, 2014, she finally released her long-awaited first album, "Will", which is currently a smash hit in terms of sales! Her first solo tour sold out at 4 venues across Japan. Her 5th single, which was also her first theme song for a TV drama, "Koiuta" ("love poem") also became very popular many places.

On February 28th, she appeared in the 20th Tokyo Girls Collection festival, its 10 year anniversary, being an icon for women in both the fashion and music industry.

Image When I was a kid, me and my brother looked forward to Pokémon on TV every week. Our house was full of cards and toys. I've been watching the Pokémon movies since back then, so it makes me extremely happy to be chosen to do one of their theme songs!

Pokémon has reminded me of the importance of bonds and companionship many times. I'm happy that I'll get to build excitement for such a story of companionship and bonding with "Tweedia", which translates to "trust" and "blissful love"!

I want for you to listen to Tweedia while picturing your dear friends and the people you know will always support you.
