Brazil Wayfarer Challenge

Hello Explorers, Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey to determine our next Wayfarer Challenge location! We have heard your input, and are happy to announce our next event: the Brazil Wayfarer Challenge!

The Brazil Wayfarer Challenge will run from 21 September 2021 at 12:00 p.m. BRT in Brazil, until 5 October 2021 at 12:00 p.m. BRT.

For this event, the goal is for the Brazilian communities to collaboratively and thoughtfully review as many Wayspot nominations as possible to reach a Wayspot approval goal within 14 days. Pokémon GO and Ingress will unlock special rewards if the community reaches its respective goal.

How to Participate

  • Trainers Level 38+ and Agents Level 10+ who have a Wayfarer account and have passed the onboarding Quiz are able to participate.
  • You’ll be served with Wayspot nominations to review in the target countries if you played there recently in Pokémon GO or Ingress and/or your HOMETOWN or BONUS LOCATION are in the target country.

Goals and Rewards (14 day Challenge)

Each participant eligible for rewards will receive the same set of rewards based on the collective effort, and regardless of the number of individual contributions toward the collective goal.

Wayspot Approval Goal

Tier 1 - 4000
Tier 2 - 6000

Rewards

Tier 1 - Pokémon GO - 50 Pokéballs, 1 Star Piece, 1 Incense, and 1 Remote Raid Pass
Tier 2 - Pokémon GO - 100 Pokéballs, 1 Star Piece, 1 Incense, and 2 Remote Raid Passes

Eligibility for Rewards

  1. You are reward-eligible if (i) the target Wayspot acceptance goal has been met and (ii) you review at least one nomination in Brazil that also gets approved during the Challenge (so start from day 1 of the Challenge!). The rewards distributed will be based on the Wayspot acceptance goal status (Tier 1 or Tier 2) at the end of the campaign. Only one set of rewards will be distributed, such that:
    1. If at least Tier 1 is reached and you have reviewed a Wayspot that was accepted during the Challenge, you will receive one set of Tier 1 rewards.
    2. If Tier 2 is reached, and you have reviewed a Wayspot that was accepted during the Challenge, you will receive one set of Tier 2 rewards.
  2. Given (1) above, the game rewards will be distributed to all participants in the games where you are Wayfarer eligible. For example, if you are Trainer Level 40 and Agent level 8, you will only receive Pokémon GO rewards.
  3. Given (1) and (2) above, rewards will be distributed during a rewarding period a few days after the challenge ends.

If you are eligible to participate but have not used Wayfarer before, prepare in advance by signing in with the Facebook or Google account linked to your Pokémon GO or Ingress profiles. After you have signed in, check out the Criteria page and take a quick quiz to learn the basics of Niantic Wayfarer, such as reviewing and voting on nominated Wayspots. You can also check out our onboarding video here. Over the next few weeks, we will be publishing new resources for beginner Explorers to use and get accustomed to the Wayfarer program.

We are very excited to be hosting this challenge for our Brazilian community and helping them improve and enhance their gameplay experience. If you have any questions, please ask them in the Brazil Challenge categories coming soon!

See you out there! -The Wayfarer Team

Additional Rewards

Hello Explorers, Thank you all for your feedback. I’m excited to announce that Upgrades will also be a part of the rewards. You’ll see the original post (above) updated with the following:

Additional Rewards
Tier 1 - 1 Wayfarer Upgrade
Tier 2 - 2 Wayfarer Upgrades

As for those asking if the event will be open to all or just to those with current Home & Bonus Locations set to Brazil, the event will be for those who currently have a Brazilian location set as one or both of their locations or have recently played there in Pokémon GO and/or Ingress. While the Russia Wayfarer Challenge was a great exploration into experiencing global events, it presented challenges that many of you also felt. While we work on being able to support events of that size, we will continue to have localized events to ensure quality engagement and support.

  • Pokémon GO Safari Zone: Liverpool is now scheduled for Friday, October 15, 2021, to Sunday, October 17, 2021, in Sefton Park. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.
  • Pokémon GO Safari Zone: Philadelphia is now scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2021, to Sunday, October 31, 2021, in Fairmount Park. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.
  • Pokémon GO Safari Zone: St. Louis is now scheduled for Friday, November 12, 2021, to Sunday, November 14, 2021, in Tower Grove Park. Check the event’s website in the coming weeks for more details.

Not only will these Safari Zone celebrations take place in their original park locations, but also ticket holders will be able to participate in the event they have a ticket for, no matter where they are in the world. Global event hours will be based on each participant’s local time; for example, a Friday Early Access ticket for Safari Zone Philadelphia will grant event access on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.

Ticket holders will be able to enjoy the following features, whether they participate in an in-person event or play globally.
  • Featured Pokémon will be appearing in the wild and attracted to Incense.
  • You’ll be able to complete event-exclusive Special Research and Field Research tasks.

  • For Safari Zone Philadelphia ticket holders, take a snapshot for a surprise!

All ticket holders who would like to join an in-person event must RSVP. This is so that we have an accurate count of those who plan to attend an in-person event and to make sure we keep the event space safe for distanced gathering. Ticket holders will receive an email with more information on how to RSVP soon.

Safari Zone ticket holders will now see an updated date and time for their event in the Events tab. Ticket selections have not been modified; for example, if you purchased a Friday Early Access ticket, you’ll have a Friday Early Access ticket for the updated event. No additional tickets will be sold for these events.

The City Explorer Pass experience has been removed from these events, and those who purchased this add-on will have it refunded. Niantic will initiate all refunds by October 2, 2021. We’re working closely with local authorities to design safe event experiences, implementing precautions such as careful line management, social-distancing protocols, and mask requirements for all staff members. When planning your Safari Zone experience, please follow all health guidelines and pay attention to any travel restrictions. If these events must be postponed again due to governmental guidance or direction from local authorities, we will notify ticket holders as soon as possible.

Please be aware of your surroundings and follow guidelines from local health authorities when playing Pokémon GO. Upcoming events are subject to change.

As a follow up to the Response To Our Pokémon GO Community, Steve Wang, the Executive Producer of Pokémon GO has outlined the changes to the game going forward as a result of COVID-19 related issues affecting the safety of game play.

Image

What we heard -- an update from our task force

First, I want to thank you for being patient. Your passion and concerns have not been lost on us these past few weeks, and our internal task force has spent a lot of time discussing the changes we made to the PokéStop and Gym interaction distances. Now we want to give you an update as promised.

What We Heard from the Community

PokéStops and Gyms are one way we try to nudge Trainers to get outside and discover new places, walk an extra kilometer or two, and meet others. It’s been inspiring to see so many players around the world come together as a result of this design. To me, it means Pokémon GO is important to many people, and it means Trainers expressed their concerns because they care about the game.

We’ve been listening to player feedback and also set up four roundtable conversations where I spoke with over 30 community leaders from around the world (thank you all for your participation!). The two main themes we heard were:

  • The 80 meter interaction radius for PokéStops and Gyms has been an incredibly positive quality of life improvement over the past year and a half.
  • Niantic has a lot of room to grow when it comes to communication with our players.

PokéStop and Gym Interaction Distance

We understand that the increased 80 meter interaction distance became a welcome benefit for many players -- that is clear from the feedback we saw from the community. So we want to keep it: as announced last week, 80 meters (not 40 meters) will be the base interaction radius for PokéStops and Gyms globally from now on.

We still believe in the importance of discovering interesting places and things in the real world, and we don’t want to lose sight of that. The team and I are eager to develop new ways that motivate and reward Trainers for exploring and exercising in the real world. As a result of the taskforce, we have new ideas to explore and we look forward to sharing more in the coming months.

Seasonal Global Bonuses

We went through a rough learning experience recently when we had to adjust the game settings for New Zealand quickly in response to their lockdown. This experience taught us that we are not going to be able to effectively adjust the experience on a country-by-country basis in real-time. Starting with the Season of Mischief all bonuses will be set at a global level and be tied directly to the seasons in Pokémon GO. You can find more details on those bonuses in our announcement yesterday here.

Communication

We should be communicating and engaging more with Trainers. I hope that, with your patience and understanding, we can do better here. There are many ways we can improve, but to start, we’re making the following commitments to you:

  • Starting in October, we will begin publishing a developer diary every other month to share the latest priorities, events, and features for the game.
  • We are going to set up regular conversations with community leaders to continue the dialogue we began this month.
  • We will continue our work on updating the Known Issues page and in those efforts, will prioritize bringing greater visibility into the status of existing bugs for Trainers.

We love how passionate Pokémon GO Trainers are about this game, and we want you to know how passionate we are about the game and community as well. The lack of communication regarding the PokéStop and Gym interaction radius was not handled well on our part, and it was a great learning experience on how to better engage with our players moving forward. Our top priority is and always has been to get people outside into the real world and creating human connections with each other. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us -- you’ll hear from us again soon.

New attacks

Weather Ball: A new, low energy cost Normal-type Charged Attack.
  • Trainer Battles: 55 Damage
  • Gyms and raids: 55 Damage

Attack changes

Weather Ball: Weather Ball is currently a little too efficient as a low-energy Charged Attack. As a result, we’re toning down its damage just a tad.
  • Trainer Battles: 60 → 55 damage
  • Gyms and raids: 60 → 55 damage

Crunch: We’re adding an effect to this move when it’s used in Trainer battles to tie in with its effect in the core Pokémon RPGs.
  • Trainer Battles: Now has a chance of lowering the opposing Pokémon’s Defense.

Zap Cannon: We’re adding an effect to this move when it’s used in Trainer Battles to tie in with its effect in the Pokémon RPGs. We hope this will provide Pokémon like Zapdos, Regirock, Magnezone, and Porygon-Z a chance to shine.
  • Trainer Battles: Guaranteed to lower the opposing Pokémon’s Attack.

Scald: We’re lowering the energy cost of this Charged Attack and adding an effect to this move when it’s used in Trainer battles to tie in with its effect in the core Pokémon RPGs.
  • Trainer Battles: Energy cost decreased and now provides a chance of lowering the opposing Pokémon’s Attack.

Feather Dance: We’re increasing the energy cost of this Charged Attack slightly to make it harder to use as often.
  • Trainer Battles: Energy cost increased.

Megahorn: We’re giving Megahorn a slight increase in damage to boost Nidoking’s, Heracross’s, and Escavalier’s high-cost Charged Attack options.
  • Trainer Battles: 100 → 110 damage
