The Pokémon Company officially revealed the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet set on December 9th, 2022. The price of a booster pack will increase from $3.99 to $4.49 USD with this set but will now feature three guaranteed foil cards per booster with a rarity of “Rare” or higher. The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet expansion will be launching worldwide beginning on March 31, 2023.

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet Brings Changes to the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Learn about the changes being made to the Pokémon TCG in the upcoming Scarlet & Violet Series.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet launched last month and ushered in a new generation of Pokémon as Trainers embarked on their Treasure Hunt through the Paldea region. The Pokémon Trading Card Game is following suit and taking its own next step in the upcoming Scarlet & Violet Series with adjustments to card aesthetic, pack contents, and more.

Changes in the Scarlet & Violet Series

image image image

Moving forward, the classic yellow borders framing Pokémon TCG cards will transition to the same silver border used in Japan. This change both frames Pokémon TCG artwork in its originally intended border and further unifies the game on a global level. The subcategory of Trainer cards (Supporter, Stadium, etc.) currently located on the top right of Trainer cards will be moved to the top left of the card—to be more visible in players’ hands.

Energy cards are also changing with the Scarlet & Violet series. The name of the Energy will now be featured on the top of the card alongside a new subtype tag for Energy. The Energy symbol currently featured on Energy cards will now appear on the bottom right of Energy cards. This change makes the amount and type of Energy attached to each Pokémon clearer for each player. Lastly, expansion symbols will now be replaced by expansion codes on the bottom left of each card.

Due to global inflation impacting the cost of materials and production, Pokémon Trading Card Game products will see varying MSRP increases in select markets with the launch of the Scarlet & Violet series. For example, the price of a booster pack will increase from $3.99 to $4.49 USD. In an effort to continue providing a positive Pokémon TCG experience and value, each pack of Pokémon cards will now feature three guaranteed foil cards per booster—all cards with a rarity of “Rare” or higher will now be foil. In addition, certain products will come with additional items. For example, the Elite Trainer Box will include an additional booster pack and full-art promo card.

An Update on Competitive Play

Competitive play will continue to be an important part of the Pokémon TCG during the Scarlet & Violet series—stay tuned for an upcoming update on Standard rotation!

Press Release - First Expansion of the Pokémon Trading Game: Scarlet & Violet Series Coming Soon Alongside Card Design Updates

Dec. 9, 2022 — Today, The Pokémon Company International announced the next expansion for the bestselling Pokémon Trading Card Game, Scarlet & Violet, inspired by the recently released Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet video games. The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet expansion will be launching worldwide beginning on March 31, 2023.

As the first expansion in the Scarlet & Violet Series, initially unveiled during the 2022 Pokémon World Championships, Scarlet & Violet will see the return of the Pokémon ex gameplay mechanic, which will appear in each stage of Evolution and have high HP, as well as powerful attacks and Abilities. However, when a Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, it gives up two Prize cards instead of one.

image image

The Pokémon Company International also introduced several card design improvements that will be implemented starting with the Scarlet & Violet expansion. Yellow borders on Pokémon TCG cards will become gray to match the cards released in Japan, providing a more seamless Pokémon TCG experience around the world while allowing the card artwork to shine even further. In addition, subcategories for Trainer cards — such as Supporter, Item and Stadium — will appear in the top left corner to be more visible in players’ hands, Basic Energy cards will display another Energy symbol on the bottom right corner to make it easier to track during gameplay, and expansion symbols will be replaced by expansion codes and language codes across all cards.

More Scarlet & Violet details, including key expansion features and product lineups, will be revealed in the future.

Get the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Build & Battle Box

Enjoy quick games and powerful Prerelease promos with the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Build & Battle Box.

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest, arrives on November 11, 2022, but you can visit your local game store to start playing with it early! Starting October 28, 2022, select retailers will begin selling the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Build & Battle Box, giving fans a chance to have a Prerelease battle and experience the latest expansion before its official release date.

The Prerelease format allows players to compete with a 40-card deck, with four Prize cards set aside at the start of play, as opposed to a 60-card deck with six Prize cards. This format is perfect, not only for introducing new players to the exciting world of the Pokémon TCG with quick, fun games. It also gives seasoned players a window into all that Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest has to offer. With a limited card pool and the variance of cards that can be acquired in a Prerelease Kit, Prerelease events are also a great opportunity to flex your creative deck-building skills.

Each Build & Battle Box includes four Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest booster packs and a 40-card ready-to-play deck featuring key cards from current and prior sets, as well as one of four unique foil promo cards to boost your Prerelease deck. Depending on which promo card you get, you could add the powerfully bright Sunflora, red-hot Rapidash, elegant Kirlia, or ancient Archeops to your Prerelease deck and collection. Whichever promo you end up with will certainly shape your Prerelease strategy!

Sunflora (SWSH269)

image

This smiling Sun Pokémon is ready to devastate your opponents with its powerful Bright Beam attack. When using this attack for 2 Colorless Energy, you may discard up to 3 Energy cards from your hand. This attack does 70 more damage for each card you discarded in this way. Thanks to its Energy cost and attack conditions, Sunflora can be slotted into any Prerelease deck—no matter the type. Discarding all of your Energy can be a bit of a gambit since you’ll need them to power up your other attackers, but if you time its attack well, Sunflora will have no problem shining in your battles.

Rapidash (SWSH270)

image

Turn up the heat in your Prerelease battles with the Fire Horse Pokémon! Rapidash can do a solid 60 damage for 2 Energy with its Fire Mane attack, but its Heat Boost Ability is the real hallmark of this Pokémon. Once during your turn, you may discard a Fire Energy card from your hand in order to use this Ability. During this turn, your Fire-type Pokémon’s attacks do 30 more damage to your opponent’s Active Pokémon. You can use Heat Boost to do more damage with Rapidash’s Fire Mane attack or bring the heat with another Fire-type Pokémon card in your deck. In the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Prerelease format, Ninetales is a fantastic partner as it can do up to 150 damage with Rapidash’s Heat Boost, raising the damage of its Scorching Breath attack. Like Sunflora, you’ll want to be careful about discarding too many Energy cards over the course of a game, especially with Prerelease decks only having 40 cards.

Kirlia (SWSH271)

image

If consistency is key in the Pokémon TCG (and it is), Kirlia is certain to aid any player on their way to victory. Kirlia isn’t exactly a hard hitter, though, with its Slap attack only doing 30 damage. However, its Refinement Ability churns through the deck with ease in the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Prerelease format. By discarding a card from your hand each turn, you’ll be able to draw 2 cards and increase the odds of finding key pieces to a winning strategy. It can be difficult to find the cards you need with a low Supporter and Item count—which is common in Prerelease formats—but Kirlia might be all you need to refine your win condition. You may even be able to evolve it into Gardevoir, which has the same Refinement Ability and does 120 damage for 2 Energy with its Magical Shot attack, making the Evolution line a strong choice for both consistency and damage output.

Archeops (SWSH272)

image

The First Bird Pokémon, Archeops, is one of the strongest cards in Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest and is able to swing Prerelease battles in your favor. Its Primal Turbo Ability allows you to search your deck for up to 2 Special Energy cards and attach them to 1 of your Pokémon. In the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest Prerelease format, you’ll be able to accelerate Regenerative Energy and V Guard Energy to Pokémon with Colorless attack costs like Sunflora. Archeops’s own Speed Wing attack does a strong 120 damage for 3 Colorless Energy, and while it would usually be difficult to power up, attaching Energy from your hand and using Primal Turbo fulfills the Energy cost in a single turn.

There are variations between Build & Battle Boxes, so you can add your own creative twist when building your deck. Whether you’re heading to a local game store or just playing with a friend, have some quick and fun battles using cards from the new Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest expansion!
