Pokémon Trading Card Game Live Limited Beta on Mobile and Desktop Coming Soon

Starting Feb. 22, 2022, Pokémon fans in Canada will be able to preview Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Live during the limited beta for iOS and Android, as well as Windows PC and macOS devices, before the online game launches around the world. Limited-beta participants will have the opportunity to play the upcoming Sword & Shield—Brilliant Stars in Pokémon TCG Live prior to the expansion’s global release.


Developed and published by The Pokémon Company International, Pokémon TCG Live is a new online game that allows players to enjoy the Pokémon Trading Card Game in an updated digital format. Similar to the tabletop version of the Pokémon TCG that fans have loved for over 25 years, Pokémon TCG Live features fan-favorite activities like building decks and battling with friends, as well as gameplay modes and daily quests for all types of players regardless of their skill level.


Canadian players can access the limited beta on mobile devices via the Apple App Store and Google Play, and on Windows PC and macOS devices by downloading the app from Pokemon.ca/TCGL, when the testing period goes live on February 22, 2022. They will also be able to enjoy cross-platform play during the limited beta. Furthermore, Pokémon TCG Online players will have the option of playing Pokémon TCG Live during the testing period without losing access to the Pokémon TCG Online app.

The Pokémon Company has announced that for the first time in nearly two years, Play! Pokémon Live competitions are back and players can earn Championship Points toward an invitation to the 2022 Pokémon World Championships in London, England. Competitors must adhear to the COVID-19 policy which requires that all potential attendees and staff must show proof of vaccination and present a negative COVID-19 test for admittance to Premier Events.

Play! Pokémon Live Competitions Are Back!

For the first time in nearly two years, Pokémon TCG Championship Series and Pokémon Video Game Championship Series players can sign up to play in live events. Battle to earn Championship Points toward an invitation to the 2022 Pokémon World Championships in London, England. Use the Event Locator to find a Pokémon TCG or video game competition near you and register to play.

Note that large events have limited capacity and require spectators and participants to have badges, as well as comply with our COVID-19 policy.

London, UK—07 February 2022—The Pokémon Company International announced today that Pokémon celebrated a fantastic year at retail in 2021, seeing a significant increase in sales across Europe for its Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) and toy ranges as it celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Named Best Gaming Licensed Property at the 2021 Licensing Awards, Pokémon was the #1 property for 2021 in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and saw the highest year-on-year sales increase across all listed properties in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, according to figures recorded by NPD Group*. Pokémon is the #1 gaining property in 2021 across the EU8** according to NPD, growing by +106% vs. 2020.

Pokémon was the #1 NPD toy property in France with sales almost double that of the #2 brand, achieving 102% growth YOY. Pokémon also had five items in the top 50 toys of the year, including Pokémon TCG Battle Academy, the first-ever board game adaptation of the TCG which won the Best Game category at the 2021 US Toy of the Year Awards, coming in at #7 with over €5m in sales. In 2021, Pokémon achieved its highest-ever annual position in both Germany and the UK. It was #9 in Germany with 100% growth, and #7 in the UK with 78% growth.

Pokémon was #1 in both Belgium and the Netherlands, achieving an amazing 183% growth in the Netherlands and 125% in Belgium, where its sales were almost double those of the #2 brand. In addition to Pokémon’s success in western Europe, TPCi is currently eyeing future growth and is extending its localised marketing efforts for the hugely popular Trading Card Game to Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Israel.

The new Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Brilliant Stars expansion, which introduces the Pokémon VSTAR mechanic, launches on 25 February.
