Important Update Regarding Play! Pokémon Events

The safety and well-being of our community, both competitors and organizers, is our top priority.

After discussions with event organizers and pursuant to guidance set forth by local, regional, and national health authorities, as well as the World Health Organization, all Play! Pokémon-sanctioned events through May 14, 2020 in North America, Latin America, South America, Oceania, South Africa, and Europe have been canceled. This includes all Pokémon Regional Championships, Special Events, League Challenges, League Cups, Premier Challenges, Midseason Showdowns, and Prerelease tournaments. No championship points will be awarded during this time. While independent of Pokémon, organizers of these events should act in the best interest of their event and community, including always being mindful of the safety of participants. We appreciate their cooperation and partnership during this challenging time. We are continuing to closely monitor health mandates, guidelines, and recommendations from appropriate government agencies while evaluating all independent and Pokémon-organized events on a case-by-case basis.

The only Pokémon Regional Championships scheduled for Canada in 2020 was to be held on March 13th, 2020 to March 15th, 2020 at The International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Organizers announced after the events official start time that the event had been canceled and many participants had already entered the venue. This already compounds a very bad season for competitive play for Pokémon. A memo sent throughout the Ontario provincial health system by Dr. David Williams, the provinces chief medical officer, recommended that Ontarians not travel outside of Canada and gatherings larger than 250 people be canceled.

The official Pokémon website updated later on Friday, March 13th, 2020 with the cancellation of 3 other regional events as well. The Regional Championships event for Perth Australia on March 14th and 15th, 2020 appears to be going ahead as scheduled. Our list of COVID-19 canceled Pokémon Events has been updated with this announcement.

For the Health and Safety of the Play! Pokémon Community, Some Events Have Been Canceled

Please read this article for more information regarding specific upcoming 2020 events.

The safety and well-being of our community, both competitors and organizers, is our top priority. Organizers of League, Regional, and Special Events are independent of Pokémon and act in the best interest of their event and community, including always being mindful of the safety of all attendees. Out of an abundance of caution, and after discussions with event organizers regarding recommendations and guidance set forth by local and national health authorities, the following events are canceled:

  • Mississauga/Toronto Regional Championships, scheduled for March 13-15
  • Charlotte Regional Championships, scheduled for March 20-22
  • Regional de Pokémon de Joinville em Santa Catarina 2020, scheduled for March 28-29
  • Salt Lake City Pokémon Regional Championships, scheduled for April 4-5

Please visit the event websites for updates and Pokemon.com/PlayPokemon for more information on Play! Pokémon events. We are evaluating all independent and Pokémon-organized events on a case-by-case basis based on the most up-to-date information and recommendations provided by appropriate government organizations. We appreciate your continued support and understanding during this challenging time.

Should I be concerned about COVID-19 at Play! Pokémon events?

The safety and well-being of our community, both competitors and organizers, is our top priority.

We strongly advise all attendees, volunteers, and organizers to consider the guidelines issued by the WHO with regards to health and wellness while attending mass gatherings when determining whether to attend an event. At the event, all attendees should follow the protocols set forth by local health authorities and the WHO.

Please check for updates regarding Play! Pokémon events on our website and @PlayPokemon. If you have additional questions, please contact Pokémon Customer Service.

What precautions are you taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at your events?

Out of an abundance of caution, we are altering several aspects of player interaction at Pokémon organized events, such as removing the requirement to shake hands before and after matches. We are making hand-sanitizers available to attendees while also taking additional measures to sanitize surfaces as much as possible. We strongly advise all attendees, volunteers, and organizers follow the protocols issued by the WHO with regards to health and wellness while attending mass gatherings.

The official Pokémon website has revealed 5 new cards from the upcoming Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield and they are: Morpeko V (079), Morpeko VMAX (080), Galarian Obstagoon (119), Galarian Perrserker (128) and Metal Saucer (170).

Image

Pokémon V, Pokémon VMAX, and More in the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield Expansion Launching February 7

Take a look at more impactful cards arriving in the next expansion on February 7.

Steel yourself for bigger battles when the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield expansion launches on February 7 with Pokémon from the Galar region, tough Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX, and helpful Trainer cards. Get an early peek at some of these great cards below, and start thinking about new ways to win as we get closer to launch. And if you missed it, check out our first round of featured cards from the Sword & Shield expansion.

Morpeko V (079)

The determined face of Morpeko V shows just how serious this Pokémon is about helping you in battle. You can ding your opponent's Bench for very little Energy with the Spark attack, useful when paired with the numerous Pokémon in this expansion that take advantage of targeting damaged Pokémon. Morpeko V can also deliver a more shocking blow with Electro Wheel, which has the added effect of switching it out of the Active Spot. A well-timed attack-and-retreat can be an incredible tactical move in any match, and that's just what Morpeko V provides.

tcg

Morpeko VMAX (080)

Morpeko VMAX has only one attack, but it's a good one, scattering damage all over your opponent's side of the board. The Max Discharge attack shocks each of your opponent's Benched Pokémon for 20 damage while hitting the Active Pokémon for a hefty 180 damage. And don't worry about a quick retaliation against Morpeko VMAX; its 300 HP is enough to weather virtually any return attack.

tcg

Metal Saucer (170)

There are a number of really good Metal-type Pokémon in the Sword & Shield expansion, and they're made all the better with Metal Saucer. This Item card lets you grab a basic Metal Energy out of your discard pile and attach it to a Benched Metal-type Pokémon. This kind of Energy acceleration has been the key to many decks in the past, and now once again you get to take advantage of this powerful effect.

tcg

Galarian Obstagoon (119)

If you're looking to get away with a little mayhem in your next match, Galarian Obstagoon is here to help. The fun begins when the Pokémon evolves from Galarian Linoone, triggering its Untamed Shout Ability to drop 3 damage counters on 1 of your opponent's Pokémon. You have the chance to do even more scot-free damage with its Obstruct attack, which does 90 damage and prevents any return volleys from Basic Pokémon.

tcg

Galarian Perrserker (128)

Although Galarian Perrserker looks excited to rush into battle, this Pokémon may do its best work from your Bench. Its Steely Spirit Ability adds 20 damage to any of your Metal-type Pokémon's attacks, and that stacks if you have multiple Galarian Perrserker in play. Its Metal Claw attack probably won't win many battles on its own, but remember that Steely Spirit does affect Galarian Perrserker's own attack, immediately increasing it to 90 damage.

The official Pokémon has announced that they will be distributing 4 Promo Card at Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield Prerelease tournaments which will be held from January 25th, 2020 until February 3rd, 2020. Participants in the tournament will be able to get 1 of 4 cool promo cards: Rillaboom (SWSH006), Frosmoth (SWSH007), Galarian Perrserker (SWSH008), or Cinccino (SWSH009).

Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield Prerelease Promo Cards Feature Galar Pokémon

Pokémon TCG Prerelease tournaments let players be the first to get their hands on the newest expansion and try out the latest cards in action. With the launch of the new Sword & Shield Series, Prerelease tournaments will be your first chance to play with Pokémon from the Galar region. Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield Prerelease tournaments will be held January 25 – February 3, 2020, shortly before the expansion launches on February 7. In addition to getting cards early, you'll be able to pick up 1 of 4 cool promo cards: Rillaboom, Frosmoth, Galarian Perrserker, or Cinccino! Check with your local game store to see when they're hosting one of these events.

When you sit down to play at a Prerelease tournament, you'll receive a Build & Battle Box containing a 23-card Evolution pack, which includes an exclusive foil promo card and is designed to give you a strong foundation for building a new deck. Each box also includes four 10-card booster packs from Sword & Shield. You'll use these cards, plus basic Energy provided by the Tournament Organizer, to construct your own 40-card deck. You'll get to keep all the cards from your Build & Battle Box, whether you use them in your deck or not. If you're lucky, you might even open one of the new out-of-this-world Pokémon V or Pokémon VMAX.

The promo card you'll receive is a cool collector's item, with a shiny foil stamp marking it as a Prerelease promo. It can also be used in your deck, and you're likely to wind up with plenty of cards that match its type. Take a look at the four promo cards available at Sword & Shield Prerelease tournaments, and get some tips to make the most of the one you receive.

Rillaboom (SWSH006)

Sound off with the Grass-type Rillaboom, the final Evolution of Grookey. Its Voltage Beat Ability is super useful no matter the tournament format, allowing you to quickly get lots of Energy onto your Pokémon by grabbing 2 Grass Energy cards from your deck and attaching them to 1 of your Pokémon. Rillaboom will happily take that Energy for itself so it can power up its hard-hitting Hammer In attack. You're less likely to come across super-powerful Pokémon V in Prerelease tournaments, so 140 damage is likely to be enough to Knock Out a lot of foes in one hit.

tcg

Frosmoth (SWSH007)

Like Rillaboom, the chilly Frosmoth helps keep your Pokémon full of Energy with its Ice Dance Ability. It lets you attach a Water Energy card from your hand to your Benched Pokémon—and keep doing that as often as you like during your turn, powering them up quickly so they're ready to attack. Frosmoth is a Stage 1 Pokémon, meaning it's even easier for it to show off its moves. And remember, it doesn't have to be Active to use this Ability; Frosmoth can make an impact even when it's out of the spotlight.

tcg

Galarian Perrserker (SWSH008)

The Meowth of the Galar region take on a hairy new look and evolve in a new direction—Galarian Perrserker! This Pokémon sharpens the attacks of any of your Metal-type Pokémon (including itself) by making their attacks do 20 more damage. In a Prerelease tournament, every little bit helps, and a couple of these Pokémon on your Bench can make a massive difference in battle. At 120 HP, Galarian Perrserker is rather durable, too, making it potentially effective in the Active Spot and attacking with Metal Claw for a boosted 90 damage.

tcg

Cinccino (SWSH009)

The only Pokémon from this lineup who wasn't discovered in the Galar region, Cinccino has some useful skills to contribute to your Prerelease deck. Its Make Do Ability lets you turn over your hand by discarding a card to draw two more. Remember that you have only 40 cards in a Prerelease deck, so make sure you don't draw yourself out of cards. Speed up your Energy attachment by discarding an Energy with the Ability, then getting it onto a Benched Pokémon with Cinccino's Energy Assist attack—which also does 40 damage.
