Pokémon Introducing More Ways to Compete and Win Across the Globe for the 2017 Play! Pokémon Season

Pokémon Trading Card Game and video game players have more opportunities to earn Championship Points and a coveted invitation to the 2017 Pokémon World Championships

As Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) and video game players begin preparing for the 2017 Play! Pokémon season, The Pokémon Company International today announced a full slate of all-new competitive events.

With the introduction of two International Championships that are open to all players worldwide, plus additional local events to make it even easier to jump into the Play! Pokémon program, 2017 is positioned to be one of Pokémon’s biggest competitive seasons ever.

At the core of the Play! Pokémon season is the Pokémon Championship Series, consisting of season-wide Pokémon TCG and video game events where players earn Championship Points towards a potential invitation and Travel Award to the Pokémon World Championships, taking place August 2017 in Anaheim, California. Players will also vie for a piece of a cumulative prize pool worth more than $5 million across all Pokémon Championship Series events.

New for the 2017 season, Pokémon is introducing two International Championships that are open to all players across the world, giving Pokémon TCG and video game players opportunities to play, win prizes, and earn Championship Points. The first event, the European leg of the Pokémon International Championships, will take place 9–11 December 2016, at ExCeL London, United Kingdom. The three-day event will give Pokémon video game players their first chance to battle in a sanctioned event using Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon (launching 23 November). Pokémon TCG players will also have their first chance to battle with the Pokémon TCG: XY—Evolutions expansion launching later this year.

Beginning this October, the Pokémon Regional Championships kick off with a full schedule of events coming to cities in North America and Europe. As with the International Championships, Regional Championships are open to Pokémon TCG and video game players regardless of their country of origin and will feature larger prize pools and more Championship Points at each tournament. Pokémon TCG players will also have an expanded slate of local events coming to participating hobby shops around the world. Attending League Cup events is a great way for new Pokémon TCG players to get in on the action and hone their skills for larger events throughout the year.

Pokémon video game players can look forward to more local events as well, including the return of Premier Challenge and Midseason Showdown events. Premier Challenges will provide players with frequent opportunities to play at local events and to try out new strategies at smaller events. Midseason Showdowns are larger events that will give players the opportunity to compete for a greater number of Championship Points in their local area.
When Pokémon-GX arrive in the Pokémon Trading Card Game early next year for the International versions and December in Japan, players will be able to battle with stronger Pokémon that can use tougher attacks than ever before. These GX attacks are so devastating that they can turn around a player’s fortune in an instant, forcing the opponent to develop new tactics on the fly. They also bring interesting strategic decisions, because a player can’t use more than one GX attack in a game! Details about GX has been added to our TCG Tutorial page.

Change the Game with Pokémon-GX!

A powerful new kind of Pokémon is coming to the next Pokémon TCG series in early 2017.

The Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon Series is set to launch in early 2017, and when it does, players will be able to battle with stronger Pokémon that can use tougher attacks than ever before. These powerful Pokémon-GX and their GX attacks are so devastating that they can turn around a player's fortune in an instant, demanding that the opponent respond with new tactics. They also bring interesting strategic decisions, because a player can't use more than one GX attack in a game!

Just how devastating is a GX attack? How about being able to search your deck for 5 Energy cards and attach them to your Pokémon in any way you like with Solgaleo-GX's Sol Burst-GX attack? Or immediately Knocking Out one of your opponent's Basic Pokémon with Lunala-GX's Lunar Fall-GX attack? With the right Pokémon-GX in your deck, it's possible!

But beware, properly using Pokémon-GX in battle takes preparation—because while they are powerful, Pokémon-GX have strict restrictions and carry heavy risks.

What Players Need to Know about Pokémon-GX:
  • A player can use only one GX attack per game. (That's one total, not one per Pokémon-GX!)
  • Each Pokémon-GX has a maximum of two attacks in addition to its GX attack.
  • Pokémon-GX have strong attacks and high HP, so they can overwhelm the opponent's Pokémon without needing to rely on the GX attack.
  • All of this power comes at a price. When your Pokémon-GX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes two Prize cards. Think carefully about how and when to use your Pokémon-GX in battle.

Additionally, TPCi announced Pokémon-GX, a new kind of card coming to the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) as part of the Sun & Moon Series, at the brand’s premier fan event in San Francisco.

Type: Fighting Type: Normal/Fighting
Crabrawler is a Boxing Pokémon that really hates to lose. It can be found clinging to buildings with its powerful pincers that also pack a powerful punch, or gathering around trees in search of Berries, its favourite food. Stufful may have a small body, but this Pokémon has extraordinary strength. Despite its cute, fluffy appearance, Stufful dislikes being touched and will flail its arms in protest. Stufful evolves into Bewear.

Sandygast Palossand
Thumbnail Thumbnail
Type: Ghost/Ground Type: Ghost/Ground
Sandygast emerges when the grudges of fallen Pokémon soak into the sand after battle, and its tunnel-like mouth can suck the vitality from people and Pokémon. Sandygast also features a new Water Compaction Ability, never before seen in other Pokémon, where its Defense stat goes up by two if it’s hit with a Water-type move. Sandygast evolves into Palossand. Palossand disguises itself as a sandcastle, with its shovel on top serving, it is believed, as a radar to search out prey. Unsuspecting small Pokémon are dragged into Palossand’s body through its sandy vortex so it can steal their life force.
