The official Pokémon movie blog has updated. We have added a section collecting every single blog entry for easy browsing. Translations of the new entries follows:
It's been about a year since we performed our location scouting in Dubai, the Middle East metropolis.
In reality, the place is very far from the image you get from what you see and hear in the news regarding the unstable situation in the Middle East, public order is well maintained, and we were able to do our scouting in a well-developed cityscape.
That said, the place did feel very different from all the other countries we've been to so far in every respect.
"There's a massive difference between what we see and what we hear"
While these are Director Yuyama's personal words, he does believe all the members of the scouting team think the same.
I've never seen a desert outside of photos or video before. It's first when you stand in such a landscape you get a true feeling of what it's like, just like how it's first when I actually went to Dubai I got a sense of the heat and air in the city.
Likewise, I have now experienced firsthand what terms like "desert oasis" that we normally just toss casually around actually mean.
I also have to mention the many non-standard, futuristic skyscrapers.
Seeing a glittering metropolis like this appear right out of the middle of the desert felt almost like looking at a mirage.
The premiere of "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa" is finally right around the corner.
It's a tale set in the desert city "Désser City", starring Hoopa, as well as Satoshi and Pikachu, and even a grand line-up of legendary Pokémon.
How will the many hints for the movie we obtained from the material gathered in Dubai show on screen, I wonder?
That's another thing those of you who enjoyed following this scouting report should have fun looking for as you watch the movie.

Only two days remain until the movie premieres! We're interviewing Director Yuyama about the movies' highlights and subjects, and in this third part, we'll be asking about the feature film, "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa"!
Q: What kind of movie is the feature film "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa"?
First and foremost, it's a movie where lots of legendary Pokemon appear.
You could call this the ultimate concept for a Pokémon movie, and it's what I used as the starting point for this year's installment.
We were going to have all these legendary Pokémon that have starred in earlier movies appear all together, so figuring out what we were going to have them do was actually really difficult.
What made it all possible was this year's star Pokémon, Hoopa.
It has this power to retrieve asolutely anything from faraway places using its rings.
This power was a perfect fit for gathering an entire lineup of legendary Pokémon.
Q: So this star Pokémon with this special power, Hoopa, what kind of Pokémon is it?
While its natural form is the giant "Unleashed Form", it's been deprived of its power thanks to this item called the "Prison Bottle" and turned into the cute, small "Confined Form".
As such, both the big Hoopa and the small Hoopa are, in fact, the same Hoopa.
The big Hoopa went on a rampage in the past, but rather than it being out of malice, it was more like it was a child that got egged into doing something that escalated way out of control.
So when such a Pokémon got turned into its current form, one that feels the same but is so much smaller, it may be a prankster, but it also has this really innocent and honest personality and loves simple fun.
Q: However, what's been confined in the Prison Bottle, the "Unleashed Form" of Hoopa, acts as Satoshi and his friends' enemy, right?
What's been confined in the Prison Bottle is Hoopa's true power.
This power has built up a lot of "anger" due to its confinement.
So this other... Hoopa that's taken the shape of Hoopa, it's sort of like Hoopa's anger that's taken physical form.
And then Satoshi and the real Hoopa fight it, setting up this huge confrontation.
Q: The small Hoopa meets Satoshi and they have an adventure together, so what's the relationship between Satoshi, Pikachu and Hoopa like?
Hoopa is this really innocent little kid. However, it's unable to regain its original, true power.
So Satoshi shows up and, true to himself, instantly develops this really straight and uncomplicated relationship with it. It's very unlike "Kyurem VS the Sacred Swordsman Keldeo", where Keldeo had a strong sense of duty and went to Satoshi for encouragement, treating him as his elder; here instead, Satoshi's relationship with Hoopa is much more spontaneous and feel kind of like an extension of them just playing together.
For Hoopa, the events that unfold are not about duty, but instead about doing something together, overcoming difficulties together, building this very straightforward friendship between it and Satoshi.
Hoopa is able to make anything and everything "Appear!" from its rings, and while it can use this to make people happy, one of the big themes in the movie is the discovery of important things that can't just be summoned from these rings.
One of these important things is its relationship with Barza and Mary, which has developed over all the years they've been living together.
Another of them is Satoshi and his friends.
You'll get to see whether Hoopa manages to find something important when you watch the movie in the theater.

"Hoopa's Appear! Quiz" has been livening up the official movie site since June!
Since someone has managed to give the correct answer to every single question in the quiz, we're going to give out the magnificent "pure gold Pikachu" as a prize!
Congratulations, participants!
The "pure gold Pikachu" is still in the process of being made, but since the prototype is done, we'll now unveil that!
It's a Pikachu striking an adorable pose while wearing Satoshi's hat!
This Pikachu will be given to one randomly selected applicant as part of a set with a case and pedestal, complete with a plaque with the "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa" logo chiseled in.
All participants have a chance to win this "pure gold Pikachu"! Even if you haven't participated yet, you'll still be able to apply for it! The condition for applying is that you must have 10 points or more by the deadline at noon July 21st.
There are some very easy questions in the quiz too, so make sure to participate!
Also, the team battle from here on until the end will be intense!

In this second part, we ask him about production secrets regarding "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians"!
Q: We heard that because this is "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians", almost all the music is made up of the sounds of Pokémon voices?
For that reason, the movie doesn't have a score, yes.
For the title sequence, we got LGM (Little Glee Monster, performers of the theme song) to sing a cappella, so while this is the only scene in the movie with a score, the score here is nothing but voices too, consisting purely of a chorus.
Since the Pokémon are "Musicians", there are parts where they each act as specific instruments, though if we think of their cries as singing, it turns into song. Or rather, vocal percussion.
It's all voices, all through the entire movie.
There's sound effects, though.
Q: What kind of story is "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians"?
The story concerns a concert being held in concurrence with "Berry Blossoming", this harvest festival-like celebration they have in the Pokémon's forest. However, various trouble occurs, so this quick little story plays out before "Berry Blossoming" can start.
Songs get sung throughout the tale, so it can be enjoyed as a musical.
Q: This short seems packed with new things you're trying out, and it's really something to look forward to. Can you say a few words to the audience that are going to be watching "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians" in the theater?
The Pokémon are all happily singing together, so I'd like you to sing and dance along in the theater as well.
The Narrator, Mizuki Yamamoto, sings along too.
It'd make me very happy if I made the children in the theater suddenly burst into song together.
Since even we, the people who made this short, couldn't picture how it would turn out, the audience won't really be able to either. What does Pokémon singing sound like? You're in for a fun surprise at the theater.
Lots of nostalgic Pokémon will appear in the short too, so there's something else to look forward to!

"Pokémon the movie XY: The Archdjinni of Rings - Hoopa/Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians" finally premieres this weekend!
To commemmorate this, we will hold a special interview with Director Yuyama about the movies' highlights, subjects, etc. There will be four parts in all!
The two first parts of the interview will focus on the short, "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians"!
Q: The story is described as "For the first time ever! A musical performance using Pokémon cries!", so it's obvious it has a music theme. What kind of movie is it?
"Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians" is actually something I've been wanting a chance to make since all the way back when the Pocket Monsters TV series first began.
Back when the TV series first began and we decided to have all the Pokémon have individual cries, then got the voice actors to provide these Pokémon voices, I found the "sound" of the cries really interesting.
Right from the get-go, I started thinking about whether we could use these sounds to create music.
Even though the thought had entered my mind, though, I really didn't know what would be the best way to go about it.
As such, it wasn't until this year I decided to finally do this thing.
However, I couldn't really just explain to the production staff how the entire "create music with cries" idea was going to work. So we did a demo, an "initial template" so to speak, by getting the voice actors to sing Pokémon cries, then when we heard something we thought worked, we added that to the scenario.
Doing a musical that used nothing but Pokémon voices is something I really wanted to do, but seriously... being in the planning stage for over 10 years?
If you go by when I first thought of the idea, this movie has been in the works for 19(?) years now (laughs)
Q: This short has a somewhat different feel to it than previous shorts! Could you tell us some details about the production and the trial-and-error process it went through?
We made this short in a completely different way from how we've made previous ones.
First and most importantly, we had to record the voices in advance.
Usually we do the dubbing at the very end, after everything else is done, but this time we had to start off by recording the singing to first create the initial template demo, then a demonstration version. We didn't just record once either, we did it at least 3 times, then used those recordings to create the template that would be used for the demo...
This time we made songs for the short itself, ones that went with the scenario.
That meant we had to draw the Pokémon singing along to this song to get it properly lip-synced. The recording of the singing for these drawings then got split into 3 or 4 parts.
This time only the actual acting to the finished animation got recorded like normal, while the singing was recorded separately, in two or three portions.
We've never done anything like this ever before!
Every time you try something for the first time, you end up fumbling around not really knowing your way around.
Week in and week out, we noticed things that needed to be done, started working on that material, and then as we were doing so, we'd discover something else that needed to be done as well.

It's the final day of scouting.
Yesterday we had finished the last bit of the scouting we had planned to do.
Thus, today we split up into smaller groups and went off to collect material on places we each personally wanted to see.
Director Yuyama strongly requested they go gather material on Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina.
Very many people think of Palm Jumeirah when they think of Dubai.
It's an artifical archipelago designed to look like a geoglyph of a palm tree.
To get to Palm Jumeirah, we set off for Jumeirah Monorail, the first monorail ever built in the Middle East.
It currently runs a single track from Gateway Station, located at "the base of the palm", to Atlantis Adventure Station, located at "the top of the palm".
Apparently most people in Dubai tend to drive cars, so the monorail doesn't get all that much use.
Therefore, the scouting team almost got an entire empty car all to themselves and were able to station themselves at the very front of the first car to take photos from ringside seats.
As the monorail drove up the "trunk" of Palm Jumeirah, a view you simply can't get from maps or aerial photos spread out beyond the windows.
As we approached the end station, we could see the palace-like hotel "Atlantis, The Palm" come into view. The rail continued on as if dodging the hotel, eventually reaching the end station.
After we got off the monorail, we wandered through the streets of Palm Jumeirah, making our way through the perimeter to a location where we could see Dubai Marina on the opposite shore.
when viewed from the opposite shore like this, the marina is surrounded by skyscrapers, all sporting distinctive designs.
We were surprised to learn that each and every one of them is a luxury apartment complex as tall as Tokyo Tower.
Getting back to Palm Jumeirah, the archipelago is really large in scale.
It's impossible to capture the overall picture of it just from walking around in it, so we once again set off, this time in order to get a view of it from the Dubai Marina.
Our guide led us to the restaurant on the 52nd floor of the Marriott Harbor Hotel in Dubai Marina.
From here we could view Palm Jumeirah from afar, as well as get a top-down view of the marina!
This was the first time on this journey we got to view such futuristic yet inorganic skyscrapers from a location right in the middle of them.
"This is what I wanted to see", one of the graphic designers said with delight.
Maybe we'll have the battle between the legendary Pokémon take place here, then!?
The idea to view the area from a ship then hit us, and we boarded a water taxi to collect material on the Dubai Marina as we weaved down the canal.
As the ship passed under a big bridge, we exited this valley of buildings glittering in light of the sun.
When we finally reached the harbor, the day was almost over and evening was approaching.
With this, the overtime scouting came to an end.
We returned to our hotel again, where all the other staff members had returned from their individual productive days as well.
There's only 9 days left until the movie premieres! The next report will be the final part.

We started off with an interview with the topic "Pokémon and me"!
When asked "How long is Pokémon's history now?", Shokotan replied "19 years"!
It's been an entire 19 years, and now that you can easily trade Pokémon with people all over the world via wifi, Pokémon has truly become a subculture that connects people! Nostalgic Pokémon are still showing up, or getting new Mega Evolutions, so I really think these 19 years have passed in the blink of an eye!
Every year, when summer comes and Pokémon Movie season is in session, I like watching older movies as well. I was watching "The Guardian Gods of the Water Capital: Latios and Latias" the other day and ended up crying at it! Your childhood memories of the summer when you first watched a movie truly engraves it into your heart, but I feel that as you keep growing older and gain more life experience, the movie just becomes more and more emotional to you. This is why I pour my heart and soul into the dubbing of this movie, for the sake of all the children who will be watching a Pokémon movie for the first time this year.
We can't wait for this year's movie to premiere!
This is a truly heartfelt interview with Shoko-tan, where she really lets her feelings out!!
Now we're curious, can you tell us a bit about the character you play in "The Archdjinni of Rings: Hoopa"?
Mary is a girl with slight magic powers who watches over Hoopa alongside her brother Barza, played by Tatsuya Fujiwara. She and Hoopa have been together ever since she was a child, and grew up like siblings. She currently keeps watching over Hoopa, feeling both like an older sister and a mother to it, coming across as a noble, strong and cool woman.
Tell us some of the highlights of this year's movie!
It's Hoopa's special ability that lets it summon all kinds of Pokémon! It's incredibly showy! More legendary Pokémon than ever before show up, making for a veritable legendary festival that leaves even Hollywood astounded!
Groudon! Giratina! Lugia! And more! Which do you like better? Even if you enjoy multiple different generations, when your favorite legendary Pokémon shows up, you still really feel all that excitement and good emotions bubble up inside you and go all "whoosh!"
You only get to experience watching this year's Pokémon movie on the big screen this one summer, and I think it'd be an extremely valuable experience that'll create memories for a lifetime! I want you all to go to the theater and make sure you get the experience of seeing this year's Pokémon movie, this rush of legends, right there in the theater chair, with your own naked eyes!
As she tells us how much she wants us to get the true theatrical experience of the movie, Little Glee Monster, performers of the theme song for this year's short, "Pikachu and the Pokémon Musicians", come on stage!

The card makes them all excited.

You have to be level 18 or up!
Referring to age as "levels", and thinking of how you gain experience points over time and thus gain levels as your age increases is a positive way of thinking! Pokémon get more fun around level 18 too! Level 18 means you're an adult!, Shoko-tan said.
