Summary
Having finished his mountain rescue mission, Virgil of the Pokémon Rescue Squad is on the way back to his base when he is forced to do an emergency landing on a mountain. There he meets a girl named Anna and an old man named Oscar, who tell him that they have had a strange experience in which a Pokémon they had never seen before saved them. Then...

"That Pokémon was Mewtwo!"

Suddenly, a mysterious man called Dunk approaches them. He tells them that he was recently saved by Mewtwo himself, but that it was gravely injured in the process. Virgil and the others immediately get ready to go and rescue Mewtwo; however, Mewtwo, who was created by humans, is said to not trust humans.

So Virgil asks Eievui and the others for help while Anna approaches the Pokémon living in the forest to start a search! However, a suspicious camera follows after the Pokémon while Dunk smiles audaciously... Now, what are Dunk's intentions? Also, more and more of Mewtwo's past is revealed! ...And finally, the heroic battle of the Awakened Mewtwo begins!

An entirely new animated feature, 'Mewtwo: The Prologue to its Awakening', is a tale set before the meeting between the strongest Pokémon 'Mewtwo' and Satoshi and his friends. It will be shown alongside 'Kyurem VS the Sacred Swordsman Keldeo'!

'Mewtwo: The Prologue to its Awakening' is a tale set before the meeting between the strongest Pokémon 'Mewtwo', which plays a major role in the newest movie, and Satoshi and his friends. Displaying overwhelming speed and power, Mewtwo gives us a battle speedier than ever before seen, thanks to its awakened form! What on earth happened in Mewtwo's past to make it only open it heart to Pokémon!? This original story jam-packed with those aspects that make Mewtwo so appealing is a must-see! It will be broadcast alongside the movie 'Kyurem VS the Sacred Swordsman Keldeo', which premiered last year!

Program Host: Atsuko Maeda

Summary:
Virgil of the Pokémon Rescue Squad has made an emergency landing in the mountains. There, he meets Oscar and Anna, who tell him of a strange experience they've had. Bit by bit, Mewtwo's past unravels. And a fierce battle against the awakened Mewtwo begins!

A special episode as a prequel to a movie? That is quite unusual. I wasn't really sure what to expect from this one. But it turned to be surprisingly good for just a prequel.
We actually got the Team Eevee rescue squad (the winners of the league) as the main heroes. That was quite surprising.
And also a little girl who obviously has supernatural powers, allowing her to talk to call forest Pokemon at her aid.
But we see how powerful he is, especially in the new forme, despite his injuries.
Also, we get to know another Pokemon Hunter.
Only a shadow of Mewtwo's background story is mentioned in this prequel though. I hope more info will be given in the movie itself. So far it only became a bit confusing as it is not the same Mewtwo as the one from the 1st movie.

The animation quality of this prequel is somewhere between a normal episode and a movie, being much more close to the movie-like animation.

My rating:
For a special "episode", which was probably meant to be just part of the advertising for the new movie, it was very good and surpassed expectations and brought an interesting cameo of Virgil and his Eeveelutions.
I give it 10
You would totally like to be a tree.
