Due to the show being put on hold following the Porygon incident, some seasonally thematic episodes were postponed and aired outside of their intended order. This episode, along with episode 66, is intended to be set between episode 38 and 39.

The Smash 116 airing of the episode added the anime warning: While watching anime, make sure not to sit too close to the screen and that the room is well lit.　（テレビアニメをみるときは、部屋をあかるくして近づきすぎないようにしてくださいね。）

Both the Pokémon TV Show! The Rocket Gang Secret Empire: Pocket Monsters on Kids Station HD and Smash 116 on TV Tokyo 7 were both not remastered versions of the episode. Both airings featured the telecine/tape gunk at the top of the picture during scene changes. Both airings were on HD stations but both aired upscaled standard definition versions.

A gunny sack is generally used to transport grains and potatoes from farms. James is clearly in a net.

James: I feel just like a guinea pig in a gunny sack.
Kojiro: Does the test need to go this far?
コジロウ: おい。 テストでここまでする必要があんの？

Jessie in this scene in the English dub calls Santa Claus a trickster and a thief but Musashi only indicates at this point that people should never let their guard down around Santa. Nyarth also doesn't question Musashi about Santa being a trickster and actually was surprised to know she was acquainted with Santa. The English dub was more concerned about getting a lot of alliteration with the letter "T" in Jessie's line.

The major difference between the Smash 116 airing of this episode and all previous airings of this episode is that the color of Rougela's skin has been changed from black to purple. Oddly the color change didn't occur till the Smash 116 airing on 2012-12-23 despite the fact the episode also aired 4 days earlier on 2012-12-19 as a special Pokémon TV Show! The Rocket Gang Secret Empire: Pocket Monsters episode.

The Smash recolored version of the episode featured a significant crop of the picture similar to that of the remastered version of episode 1. A direct frame line up of the Kids Station special airing and the Smash 116 airing shows the difference. The red border is the part of the picture that is in the Kids Station special version but not in the Smash recolored version. The right and left sides of the picture are cropped quite significantly in the Smash 116 airing.

This is the scene where Musashi calls Santa Claus a thief for taking her "Hi-yah" doll (アチャ人形). The doll appears to be modeled after Bruce Lee, "hi-yah" (アチャ in Japanese) being a common way to write out the sound of a kiai . In the English dub, the doll is never called anything other than just "doll".

Jessie: I saw it with my very own eyes. Santa Claus is a Jynx.
Musashi: It took my Hi-yah doll. A thief?
ムサシ: あれが…　サンタ！？ えっ！？ 私のアチャ人形　盗られた　泥棒！？

James points out that he never had any toys stolen by Santa and Meowth accuses Jessie of having sugar plum dancing in her head. Kojiro on the other hand wants to know if that's the reason why Musashi has a grudge against Santa. Nyarth is suprised to hear for the first time that Santa is a Rougela.

An obvious spot where the color change can be seen is during the Satoshi's Zukan scene.

Oddly, part of Rougela's forearms are poorly colored white instead of the original red. It makes part of the round area near its elbow seem to be a weird bump in the recolored version.

The English dub removed the tag that stated 'Santa Claus" (サンタクロース) in the Japanese versions and replaced it with a brown snowflake tag with the face of Santa Claus.

Kasumi also says Santa Claus is spelt out while Misty says there is a picture of Santa Claus.

The English dub states that Ash and his friends went to the North Pole where Santa Claus lives. The Japanese version states that Satoshi and friends went to Santa's Island (サンタの島), a location made up for the Pocket Monsters anime.

Ash: Don't worry, Jynx. We're gonna take you and the boot back to Santa Claus at the North Pole.
Satoshi: All right! We'll take both you and that boot to Santa's Island!
サトシ: よし！　俺たちが　お前と長靴をサンタの島まで送り届けてやるよ！

In the Japanese original, Satoshi starts wondering if Santa's Island even exists. Ash just says they should turn back. Grammatical note: Farther is distance. Ash says further in the English dub and the closed captions also have further.

Team Rocket spends most of their dialog in this scene insulting each other but in the Japanese original they were all concerned about getting up to full throttle speed so they could catch up to the brats who had increased their speed. The English dub also adds extra lines in this scene.

Nyarth quotes the final line in the well-known Japanese nursery rhyme "Snow" (雪). A full English translation of Snow can be found here (translation is (C) Katsuei Yamagishi). A kotatsu (炬燵) is blanket-covered table with a heat source underneath, typically called a "heating table" in English.

Meowth: Now's a good time to go undercover.
Nyarth: "...while the cat curls up and dreams in the kotatsu."
ニャース: 「猫はこたつで丸くなる」　ニャ。

Kojiro specifically tells everyone before hand that they are going to fire a missile. Nyarth's dialog is in English in the Japanese originally which is changed in the English dub.

Jessie modifies a line from the song Santa Claus Is Coming to Town in the English dub.

The English dub removes the sushi pun reference and replaces it with a tied up knot pun instead. Guru-guru maki is a type of sushi roll and Kojiro jokes that they've wrapped Santa up like a sushi while Nyarth continues the joke by acting like a sushi server.

A lot of the dialog changed in this scene specifically Jessie still insisting Santa is a thief and how the doll was fixed. In the Japanese original, Jynx attempted to return the doll to Musashi but she wasn't living there anymore. In the English dub, the doll couldn't be returned because Jessie apparently didn't believe in Santa anymore.

What seems to be the root of the Jynx issue stems from an essay written in 2000 by African American Children's author Carole Boston Weatherford who argues that Jynx is a racist stereotype that denigrates African Americans, particularly black women. Below is her essay.

Politically Incorrect Pokemon

I confess: I succumbed to Pokemon fever. I took my 10-year-old son to "The Pokemon Movie" during opening weekend. I suffered through the bad animation and mindless plot while he sat spellbound as the battles advanced toward a saccharine moral. When I saw the movie, I already understood the phenomenon, having bought Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow and Pinball. Manufactured by Japan's Nintendo Corp., these digital games challenge players to collect and train 150 little pocket monsters that gain power as they evolve. If my two children are any indication, the game is incredibly fun and addictive.

The fun merely begins with the game, however. Pokemon trading cards capitalize on the game's popularity. Despite my son's begging, I initially resisted investing in Pokemon cards, having bought Pogs and Beanie Babies when those fads were at their peak. So, without spending a dime, my son assembled a 60-some-card collection using duplicates donated by friends. I eventually relented and allowed him to buy a starter set, theme deck and several booster packs of Pokemon cards at prices ranging from $4 to $17.

Like I said, I have submitted to Pokemania. And I would have paid a premium for the video game Pokemon Snap if only I could have found it on store shelves or e-commerce sites during the holiday shopping season. Unfortunately, Nintendo underestimated demand, and the most popular Pokemon toys were snatched up around Thanksgiving. Committed to resume my search for Pokemon Snap after the Christmas rush, I saw a character on the Pokemon TV cartoon that not only stripped the phenomenon of its innocence but stopped me cold.

The character Jynx, Pokemon #124, has decidedly human features: jet-black skin, huge pink lips, gaping eyes, a straight blonde mane and a full figure, complete with cleavage and wiggly hips. Put another way, Jynx resembles an overweight drag queen incarnation of Little Black Sambo, a racist stereotype from a children's book long ago purged from libraries.

While my 10- and 12-year olds do not find Jynx offensive, their parents and grandparents do. We call a spade a spade. And we have seen enough racist stereotypes to know one when we see it. There was room to debate whether "Star Wars: Episode One's" Jar Jar Binks was West Indian, but there is no question about this Pokemon character. Jynx clearly denigrates African Americans, particularly black women. At the close of the 20th century, how could Japanese computer animators unleash such a culturally insensitive menace on the global marketplace?

In Asia the racist stereotypes popular before World War II apparently die hard. In 1985 when Colgate-Palmolive bought Darkie Toothpaste from Hong Kong's Hazel & Hawley Chemical Co., the new owner inherited not only a leading brand but also a racist name and logo featuring a grinning caricature in blackface and a top hat. Rival Procter & Gamble leaked news of the offensive logo to the American market, sparking protests by civil rights groups. Though Colgate eventually scrapped the Al Jolson-inspired logo and changed the brandname to Darlie, the Cantonese name-Haak Yahn Nga Gou-remains "Black Man Toothpaste."

Every few years, the Japanese sense of superiority seems to resurface.

For example, the Japanese fought to keep U.S. military bases in Okinawa from relocating to the mainland. And about a decade ago, a high-ranking Japanese official attributed Japan's low crime rate to the country's lack of ethnic diversity, blaming African Americans for the high crime rate in the U.S.

These are strange days. Sisters in Harlem toss long tresses-courtesy of hair extensions shorn from women in Shanghai-to the beat of misogynistic raps produced by Japanese media giant Sony.

So I am not surprised, though I am appalled, that a computer animator at a Japanese corporation would conceive of Jynx and that corporate executives would deem the character appropriate for multiracial markets. Even Jynx's name-a variation on the term "jinx," which means a bearer of bad luck-has negative connotations. In addition, the name Jynx suggests a link with witch doctors and voodoo, practices rooted in African religion but often ridiculed by Western culture.

Pokemon is unquestionably the year's hottest toy. Since Pokemon's arrival in the U.S. in 1998, more than 7 million of the games have been sold, representing more than half of all U.S. video game revenues.

Will African-American parents continue to cough up hard-earned dollars for games and trading cards featuring a monstrously racist image? Will Jynx deal Pokemon's last hand in the black community? Or will the blonde-haired, black-faced, monster evolve into an ebony princess? Stay "tooned."
