English Official Summary

As Ash prepares to battle Conway in the third round of the Sinnoh League tournament at Lily of the Valley Island, Barry is getting ready to battle Paul. In his usual bombastic way, Barry informs Paul that their match will surely decide the top Trainer, while Paul is wary of being overconfident. The third round is a three-on-three battle, and first up, it’s Barry’s Skarmory against Paul’s Magmortar. Although Barry starts out strong by using Spikes to lay a trap, Magmortar quickly defeats Skarmory, so Barry brings out Hitmonlee. Paul then switches to Ursaring, who is powerful enough to withstand Hitmonlee’s repeated attacks. Barry has only one Pokémon left, and it’s his beloved Empoleon. Though Empoleon shows great speed and strength, it can’t achieve victory over Paul’s powerful Electivire, and Paul is the victor! Meanwhile, Team Rocket’s snack shop, thanks to a brainstorm from James, has expanded to sell souvenirs featuring all the Pokémon stars of the third round. The Electivire candy bars are particularly popular! We leave our heroes pondering Ash’s upcoming battle with Conway, who keeps mysteriously appearing for mere seconds at a time and dropping hints about his “secret strategy”...

Finnish Official Summary

Samalla kun Ash valmistautuu ottelemaan Conwaytä vastaan Barry valmistautuu kohtaamaan Paulin Sinnoh-liigan turnauksessa Lily Of The Valley -saarella.

Culture Reference

The English dub removed Jun's Big Bang comparision and replaced it with Barry saying it's lonely at the top.

Barry: It gets lonely at the top, but Paul's there to keep me company!
Jun: This is about as epic as the Big Bang!
03:11

Script Error

The English dub adds a line for the announcer.

Announcer: Everyone, please have a safe trip home.
03:36

Script Error

To attract customers, Team Rocket in the English dub decide to pair the sale of their goods with a lunch meal, probably so they could get James's crunch line to rhyme with it. Jessie also doesn't mention the T-shirts that Musashi did in the Japanese original.

The rice cakes (Manjū まんじゅう) were translated to specifically state they are bean bun to stay constant with the last episode, but unlike the previous episode, they aren't Solrock (ソルロックまんじゅう) ones but just generic Pokémon branded. The Dohmirror rice crackers (ドーミラーせんべい) also received the generic Pokémon branded treatment in both the English and Japanese versions and were renamed to just Pokémon Rice Crackers.

The English dub keeps the 'Meowth Doll' reference but doesn't go as specific as the Japanese original by saying that they are 'Beckoning Nyarth doll' (招きニャース) which are based off of the Maneki Neko (招き猫) good luck sculptures.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Dee-lectable Pokémon Rice Crackers and Bean Buns. Would you like some Pokémon rice crackers or Pokémon rice cakes?
Meowth And an adorable Meowth dolly with every order. If you buy them now, you'll get a Beckoning Nyarth doll as a bonus!
James Ah, the customer crunch. Ah, just a second, dear customers!
Jessie With Lily of the Valley pennants with lunch. We also have pennants and t-shirts of the Suzuran Tournament!
Meowth And we'll throw in a Jessilina and Meowth doll to hug while you munch. If you buy them now, you'll get a Beckoning Nyarth doll and a Musalina doll!

James in the English dub specifically makes a point of referring to the 'boss' that they are discussing is the lady Shimako (シマコ), but then later on as Team Rocket discusses various ways to improve their sales they state that they need to prove to the 'boss' that they are worthy to go inside the stadium to sell stuff. The boss they are referring to in the English dub is still Shimako (シマコ) though. The Japanese original, Rocket Gang does infer that they are talking about Shimako (シマコ) initially to impress her but they end up specifically stating that all the work that they are doing is to benefit Sakaki-sama (サカキ様), the leader of Rocket Gang, not Shimako (シマコ). In the Japanese original, Nyarth and the Rocket Gang often refer to Sakaki-sama (サカキ様) as the 'Boss' (ボス) but they made the specific point of using his given name so there was no confusing their intentions, something the English dub lacked doing.

James: The Boss lady set us up here for one reason, because she was impressed with our excellent way with a sale.
Kojiro: Our business ability was acknowledged and we got to display in a place many spectators pass by, but...

-=Long Team Rocket Discussion Here=-

Team Rocket: We'll show the Boss we can sell to the moon and back.
Rockets: All for Sakaki-sama's sake!
08:40

1 mph = 1.609344 kmph. 100 miles an hour into kilometers per hour is only 160km/h. The English dub didn't convert the speed properly as it's almost half the stated speed from the Japanese original. Jeremy Clarkson would not approve of TPCI speed conversions!

English Dex: Skarmory, the Armor Bird Pokémon. Skarmory's body is covered with a steel-like armor and can fly at speeds of over 100 miles per hour.
Japanese Dex Translation: Airmd, the Armor Bird Pokémon. It is clad in an iron-hard armor. It flies through the sky at speeds over 300 kilometers per hour.
11:58

Script Error

The Japanese narrator states that was a super effective hit.

English Dub Announcer: And Hitmonlee lands an effective Hi Jump Kick.
Japanese Announcer Translation: The super effective Hi Jump Kick hits.

Script Error

Takeshi states paralyzed and poisoned in the Japanese original while Brock says burned and poisoned in the English dub.

Brock: Ursaring's Ability is Guts. So when its status has been affected, like with Burn or Poison, its attack power grows.
Takeshi: Ringuma's Ability is Guts. If it is paralyzed, poisoned or affected by any other status ailment, its attacking power increases.
16:36

Script Error

The Japanese announcer states once again that the attack was super effective. The English dub announcer does not.

English Dub Announcer: Whoa, that couldn't have been fun.
18:49

Script Error

Okoshi (おこし) are millet or rice cake, roasted and hardened with starch syrup and sugar. Crackers was the best translation in this instance as Thunder 'cracks' just like crackers do when broken in half. Jessie in the English dub doesn't add the thunder label to the bars or explain the paralyzing victory.

Jessie: Hungry? Electivire bars to celebrate sweet victory.
Musashi: Here, we have thunder crackers of Elekible who displayed a paralyzing victory!
19:15

Script Error

Throughout the match, the announcer in the Japanese original made a point of stating that the moves used were super effective and in most instances the English dub removed or replaced those instances. Having watched the match, Musashi realizes they have become super effective themselves at selling the goods the customers want, something Jessie only hints about in the English dub but does not state outright.

James refers to the goods they are selling as tchotchke's, a term that is probably unfamiliar to most people outside New York City.

Once again in the Japanese original, Rocket Gang makes the point of stating that their work was for the benefit of Sakaki-sama (サカキ様) but in the English dub Team Rocket celebrates the fact that they will get a bonus.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Selling the customers things they want is an idea whose time has truly come. Being a perfect match for our customers' needs and types, we're super effective!
James We'll sell until we're tchotchke free. Let's keep this up and sell tons of stuff!
Team With big bonuses for you and me! All for Sakaki-sama's sake!

I suspected this in the previous episode with Naoshi (though I still liked the episode quite a lot), but it seems they`re really rushing things to get to the conclusive fight with Satoshi and Shinji. They didn`t even show most of Magmarashii`s fight against Armaldo, and in this situation, they instantly got rid of Airmd. Aside from that, though, the episode qas quite entertaining. Sawamular put up a great fight, and in my opinion should`ve at least tied with Ringuma. As for Emperto, the fact that it didn`t stop standing strong even when it was defeated is something that really impressed me, out of almost all the battles thus far in the series, even. Shinji saying it was a good battle afterwards also shows he`s starting to soften up a bit. And of course, I`m still interested in the new mystery Darkrai trainer idea. All in all, a good episode.

I wasn't expecting this battle to be as good as it was. I enjoyed the episode a lot and I thought it was a fitting end to Jun's character in the league. Was also good to see Snorlax battling again, guess it woke up :P

A lot of strange edits in this episode especially with the 'Super Effective' being taken out almost completely. What's up with that? The tchotchke term was also odd as I had to get TSS to explain what it was. If I needed to get it explained, kids definitely aren't going to know what James was talking about.

The speed conversion was just fail. It's not like 90% of the world uses km/h for speed references. The whole boss reference was also weird especially since they never really gave the girl a name and only named her the 'lady boss'. The Japanese version was really good at making it clear that they weren't referring to her and were referring to Giovanni.
