Ash and co. are in the Petalburg Forest looking for Pokémon. Max is using his binoculars, but he doesn't find anything. May asks Ash if they can stop for lunch. Max is frustrated that he cannot find one Pokémon. Ash tells Max that he won't find anything quickly. It takes time. Max tells Ash that Petalburg Forest is full of Pokémon. May pleads to Ash that they stop for lunch, but Max doesn't want to. They both grab onto Ash's arm. Ash screams as loud as he can. He says that they will first have lunch and then look for Pokémon.

Ash says that they needed a break and that they can't catch any Pokémon on an empty stomach. May is starving, and Max admits that he was getting hungry. They wait for someone to bring out the lunch. Unfortunately, no one brought anything. Pikachu takes out a can of Pokémon food out of Ash's backpack. Ash admits that he forgot to bring the food. They sigh. Pikachu opens the can only to find out that there is nothing in it. Pikachu is shocked and slumps onto the ground. Ash apologizes to Pikachu. Ash wished that Brock came along on their journey. He tells May and Max that Brock is a great cook and knows a lot about Pokémon.

Team Rocket is eating sandwiches while spying on Ash and co. Meowth suggests that they attack them while they are hungry. Jessie and James don't want to yet since they are still eating. Max shuffles around in his bag and takes out a box of chocolate cookies. However, only one is left. He decides to split it with his friend and sister. Out of nowhere, a Pokémon flies out and steals the cookie. Max is happy that he found a Pokémon even though it stole their food. Max notices it as a Taillow. Ash looks up Taillow in his Pokédex. The Taillow flies on a tree branch and eats the whole cookie. Max is amused that Taillow liked the cookie, but May is sad by it. Pikachu looks around and points to an apple core. Up on the trees are apples. Pikachu knocks down some of the apples with a Thundershock, but a flock of Taillow grabs the apples before they hit the ground. The Taillow are now angry because Ash and co. are in the middle of the Taillow territory. The Taillow attack! Ash tells Pikachu to use Thunderbolt. The shock is too much for Taillow and they fall to the ground. Ash and co. are glad that electric attacks are super effective to flying Pokémon. However, the Taillow begin to get up. They are really angry now. Pikachu tries another Thunderbolt, but this time the attack has no effect on the Taillow. Max is surprised that the electric attack didn't do anything.

Team Rocket spots the Taillow from behind a bush. They are amazed at the courage the Taillow have. Catching Pikachu would be easy if the Taillow were on Team Rocket's side. Pikachu uses another Thunderbolt. A Taillow absorbs the attack. Ash and co. think that the Taillow that absorbed the shock is the leader. The leader attacks Pikachu, but Pikachu dodges the attack. Taillow swoops back and tackles Pikachu directly. Pikachu uses another Thunderbolt, but it doesn't work. The flock begins to get closer to Ash and co. The flock dives in for Ash and co. A character comes out and sends out Forretress. It uses Explosion. When the dust clears, Ash notices that it is Brock.

Brock leads them out of the forest. Ash thanks Brock for his help. Brock notices that Pikachu is a bit hurt. He takes out a Potion and sprays some on Pikachu. Because of the sting, Pikachu screams. Brock says that he went home and found out that everything was okay. So then he gave Professor Birch a call and found out that Ash was heading to Rustboro City. Then he decided to look for Ash and now he has found him. Ash is glad that Brock is going to travel with them again. Ash introduces May and Max to Brock. Ash tells them that Brock was a gym leader. May and Max think that that's really cool since their father is also a gym leader. Brock thinks that they also want to become gym leaders. Max is sad that he doesn't even have his first Pokémon. Brock cheers him up. He tells everyone that he left all of his Pokémon behind except for Forretress. May asks Brock if he is a good cook. Brock says yes, and they all decide to stop for some lunch. Brock screams in shock since the four sandwiches he had disappeared. They wonder if the Taillow ate the sandwiches. Brock explains to them that Taillow are usually aggressive and this causes other Pokémon to hide. That's why Max didn't see any Pokémon in the forest. Brock decides to make some stew. He also prepares some Pokémon food for Pikachu.

The flock of Taillow stare down at the gigantic hole in the ground. Team Rocket comes out with the four sandwiches. They hold it up for the Taillow. Meowth says that the Taillow can have the sandwiches, but first they have to make a deal. The Taillow comes flying down and they all eat the sandwiches. The flock of Taillow want some more food. Jessie agrees to give the Taillow more food, however they have to do something for them.

Brock has the stew prepared. He sees Ash and May drooling on him. The same Taillow (the leader) flies down to Ash and co. It lands on a rock and talks to Pikachu. Ash thinks that the Taillow has come back for a fight. Brock thinks that Taillow wants to prove who's the best, and it wants to battle with Pikachu. The battle begins. Pikachu starts off with a Quick Attack. It jumps from rock to rock. Then Pikachu tries to tackle down Taillow but misses. Taillow tries to tackle down Pikachu, but Pikachu dodges it. Then Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but the attack has no effect. Taillow chases Pikachu until it finally grabs onto Pikachu's tail. Pikachu tries another Thunderbolt, but Taillow withstands the attack. Taillow drags Pikachu into the air and then throws it into the water. Taillow dives down to the water. It charges at Pikachu with full speed. Pikachu prepares a Thunder attack, and the two Pokémon collide. A stream of water shoots out. Both Pikachu and Taillow look tired. Brock tells Ash that he has to end the battle by catching it. Ash throws a Pokéball at Taillow. Taillow successfully is captured! Ash sends out Taillow. It looks extremely tired. Brock sprays some of the Potion on Taillow. Ash asks Taillow if it wants to travel with him. Taillow says yes, and Ash wipes of the chocolate on Taillow's face. Ash is happy that he caught his very first Pokémon in Hoenn.

Taillow sees the flock coming back. Ash thinks that the whole flock wants to battle Pikachu. Ash's Taillow tries to talk the flock out of it. Suddenly, Team Rocket appears and they recite their motto. Ash and co. realize that the Taillow are working for Team Rocket. Jessie tells the Taillow that they will get more sandwiches if they do their job. Brock is furious that Team Rocket stole his sandwiches. Meowth tells the flock to battle Pikachu. May sends out Torchic. Torchic begins to run towards the flock even though May didn't command it to do that. Torchic crashes into a rock and faints. May cries and returns Torchic back into its Pokéball. The clock beeps meaning that the stew is ready. Everyone crowds around the stew. Brock offers the Taillow to join them for lunch. Then Pikachu uses Thunderbolt on Team Rocket, and they blast off again.

Everyone thanks Brock for his delicious stew. May and Max agree that Brock is a great cook. The flock lifts up to the sky to leave. Ash's Taillow waves goodbye to the flock. The flock disappears into the sky. Ash says that it is time to head to Rustboro City. Brock says that they have to do the dishes first. Ash, May, and Max sigh.
