Ash will start his training today, but first him and his friends are getting lunch ready. Brock is putting together some sandwiches. The Pokémon are anxious to eat the sandwiches. Brock asks Corphish if it will help cut the vegetables. Corphish does an excellent job cutting the vegetables. Then it walks over to the sandwiches and cuts them too. The sandwiches are destroyed. Now Ash and co. have to eat their lunch with a spoon. Ash blames Corphish for all of this. Corphish doesn't even feel bad about what it did. Ash knows that he has to do something about Corphish's attitude.

Team Rocket comes across an old gold mine, however according to James, it has been many years since the mine produced any gold. Meowth assumes that the mine used to have lots of gold in it. Jessie dreams of having her own house made completely out of gold. James reminds Jessie that there probably isn't any gold in the mine. Jessie tells James that there is always something. When they bring the gold to the boss, they will be super rich.

Team Rocket walks inside the cave. They find an old car. They get in the car and begin to ride in it. The cave eventually begins to get darker. Jessie and James think the cave might be haunted. Suddenly, they see two glowing gems. The car comes to a complete stop causing Meowth to fall out of it. Talking comes from the gems. Thinking it's a ghost, Jessie and James put the car in reverse. They leave Meowth behind. Meowth freaks out and faints. The "ghost" is actually a Sableye. It pokes Meowth hoping that it is alright. Jessie and James are out of the cave. They need to go back in the cave and rescue Meowth. Suddenly, they hear Ash and co.'s voice coming towards them. Jessie and James jump out of the car to hide.

Ash and co. come across the gold mine too. Max checks his PokeNav, but that doesn't have any information about it. Ash looks in the cave. He thinks that it will be perfect training for him. He will give a good scare to Corphish which will hopefully calm it down. Ash presses a button. The lights turn on. Then Ash tells his friends their plan on scaring Corphish. May thinks that Ash's plan may after all work. Team Rocket have been watching Ash and co. all this time. James thinks they should warn them about the ghosts, but Jessie says that they shouldn't and instead focus on capturing Pikachu.

Inside the cave, Max asks May what they have to do. They are in the car. May pulls out a white sheet and tells Max to put it on him. They will pretend to be ghosts and then scare Corphish. In the middle of the cave is a control room. Meowth is resting in it. When Meowth wakes up, he sees a Sableye. Sableye tells Meowth that it just likes to scare people. Then Sableye starts to eat something. Meowth hasn't eaten all day, and Sableye offers Meowth its food. Meowth takes a bite out of it, but the food that Sableye was eating happens to be a rock. Sableye laughs at Meowth. Sableye wants Meowth to stay with it because it doesn't get much company. Then Sableye tells Meowth that they are in the control room back when the mine was running. Meowth notices that Ash and co. are also in the cave. Sableye wants Meowth to help it scare Ash and co. Meowth agrees to do it. He has a secret plan to trick Sableye.

Ash sends Corphish out. He tells Corphish that they will test its courage in the cave. Ash mentions to Corphish that there are ghosts in the cave. Corphish doesn't believe Ash until it hears one at the far end of the cave. May and Max put on their ghost costume. Corphish sees the ghost and is freaked out. Corphish then headbutts the ghost. May and Max fall out and land in the car. Corphish, seeing that it was all a trick, pushes the car down the tracks. Then it runs away.

May and Max are moving down the track. Ash's plan on calming Corphish failed. Suddenly, Sableye appears to them. Its eyes glow brightly. May and Max are scared stiff until Max realizes that it is just a Pokémon. May looks up Sableye in her Pokédex. Sableye laughs because May and Max were scared. May and Max don't think it's funny. May sends out Torchic. Torchic uses Ember, but Sableye dodges the attack. Then Sableye licks Torchic. May calls back her Torchic. Meowth walks out. May and Max want to know why Meowth is here. Meowth pushes a button and a net drops down on May and Max.

Ash finds Corphish and meets up with Brock at the cave entrance. Ash knows that his plan on calming down Corphish failed. Ash wonders where May and Max are at. Brock says that they haven't come out of the cave yet. Ash and Brock now have to look for May and Max.

May and Max are brought in the control room. They are trapped in the net. Sableye asks Meowth if they are friends. Meowth tells Sableye that they are best friends. They see Ash and Brock on the screen, and they decide to scare them too. Sableye and Meowth walk out of the control room. Max thinks that Meowth is just tricking Sableye. He feels that they should help Sableye. Corphish is still mad at Ash for tricking it. Ash reminds Corphish that it is partly its fault for losing May and Max. Corphish gets even madder by this. A cart rolls down towards Ash and Brock. Suddenly, Sableye comes down from behind Ash and licks his neck. Ash quickly turns around but sees no one there. Ash and Brock are a bit creeped out now. Then Sableye comes up behind Brock and licks his neck too. Brock is scared too. Then Meowth, who is dressed in black, comes up to Corphish and hits it. Corphish thinks its Ash causing all the trouble. It tackles Ash to the ground. Pikachu tries to stop Corphish, but Corphish tackles Pikachu too.

May and Max sees that everyone is now just fighting with each other. May sends out Torchic. Unfortunately, Torchic is still paralyzed from its last battle. May asks Torchic if it can use Ember to break the net. Torchic does use Ember, and then May puts Torchic back into its Pokéball. Then they go help Ash and Brock. Meanwhile, Corphish and Pikachu are fighting against each other. Ash demands that they both stop. Suddenly, Meowth comes out and fires a net capturing Pikachu and Corphish. Meowth and Sableye appear. Meowth tells them that Sableye is its best friend. May and Max then meet up with Ash and Brock. May tells Sableye that Meowth is tricking it so that it can capture Pikachu and other Pokémon. Meowth tries to tell Sableye that May and Max are the ones lying. Sableye doesn't know who to believe.

Suddenly, Jessie and James meet up with the others. They say their motto. Jessie and James are impressed at Meowth for capturing Pikachu and Corphish. Meowth then goes with Jessie and James. They escape on an empty cart. Ash sends out Taillow. Taillow pecks at Jessie's head. Jessie gets angry and takes out a bomb. She throws it at them. The bomb explodes giving Team Rocket a boost. However, the cave begins to collapse. Sableye leads them all out of the disaster.

The cave has fully collapsed. Team Rocket regains consciousness. They begin to argue on who's fault it was that caused the disaster. Ash and co. appear at the top of the cave. Team Rocket is surprised that Ash and co. were saved. Meowth is glad that Sableye is not hurt. Sableye is angry at Team Rocket for destroying its home. Ash tells Sableye to go help out Corphish and Pikachu. Sableye destroys the net with its Fury Swipes. Corphish uses Crabhammer and Pikachu uses Iron Tail. Both attacks damage Team Rocket. Then Sableye blasts them off with its Night Shade attack.

Ash and co. are glad that everyone is safe. They all thank Sableye for saving them. Even Corphish thanks Sableye. May thinks that Corphish has now settled down a bit. This means that Ash's test was a success. Then Ash and co. wave goodbye to Sableye.
