Ash is training with his Pokémon. They are standing at the edge of the cliff. A wave towards them. At the last moment, Ash and his Pokémon run to dodge the wave. May and Max are impressed that Ash's training is really working. Then Brock calls everyone over for breakfast. While they are eating breakfast, they see a girl surfing. She faces Ash and co. Her name is Shana. Shana tells Ash that he is Brawly's top apprentice and his girlfriend. Then Shana challenges Ash to a battle. Ash accepts her challenge.

Right before they battle, Shana's stomach growls. She is very hungry. Ash gets upset by this, but then his stomach growls too. Brock invites Shana over for breakfast. Shana quickly sets herself up for breakfast. May thinks Shana is weird. Team Rocket is in their Magikarp submarine underwater. Meowth is watching Ash and co. He too is also hungry. He smells some good food. Meowth looks behind and sees Jessie and James eating. Meowth gets angry at them for not inviting him. Jessie and James assures Meowth that they saved some food for him. Then Jessie asks Meowth if he has a plan to capture Pikachu. Meowth tells them his plan. Jessie and James seem happy with Meowth's plan.

Ash and Shana have just finished eating their breakfast. Ash and Shana begin to challenge each other. May states that they almost look like exact images of each other. Shana wants to battle Ash because Brawly thinks that Ash is better trainer than her. Shana wants to prove to Brawly that she is better than Ash. Brock interrupts them before they can battle. Brock tells Ash that today is his turn to wash the dishes. Ash begins to wash the dishes. Shana helps him so that the chores get done faster.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket has dugged a lot of holes. There are enough holes planted that Ash and co. have to fall into one of them. Meowth falls into a hole instead. Brock is collecting sticks. He notices that there is something different about the day. Then Brock sees some Pokémon running around for cover. Brock sees dark clouds up in the sky.

The battle between Ash and Shana is about to begin. Team Rocket is hiding behind a rock watching the battle. The field that Ash and Shana are about to battle on is apparently loaded with lots of holes. Ash chooses Pikachu for the battle. Pikachu looks at something. Brock thinks about it for a bit. Then Shana sends out Meditite. May looks up Meditite in her Pokédex. Meditite starts off with Focus Punch. Pikachu barely dodges the attack. Then Meditite uses Hi Jump Kick, but Pikachu dodges again. Jessie is disappointed that the Pokémon aren't falling the holes. James says that it is very slim to miss every hole they made. Brock catches on with Ash's strategy. Pikachu is dodging every attack until it finds the right time to attack, while Shana plans to win with pure strength.

Meditite then uses Hi Jump Kick, and Pikachu uses Quick Attack. Before both Pokémon can attack each other, they are stopped by a familiar voice. It is Brawly. Brawly jumps down from the cliff and runs towards Ash and co. Brawly announces that a terrible hurricane is approaching, and they are definately not safe in the spot they are in now. Brock assumes that Pikachu noticed the hurricane right before the battle. Brock also says that there were other forest Pokémon that could sense the hurricane too. They have to all leave and find a safer spot.

The hurricane begins to form pretty fast. It is already raining by the time they reach the top of the cliff. Brawly tells everyone that there is a cave up ahead. Shana notices some Seedot lying around. She tells the Seedot that they can come along with them. Brock also notices some Shroomish and offers them to come along too. Team Rocket is on their submarine. They are about to go inside when Meowth states that the hatch is broken. Jessie and James are terrified. A gigantic wave comes down on them sending Team Rocket into the sky.

Ash and co. are walking along the ledge of the cliff. The storm has gotten a lot worse. May looks down. She is now terrified. Ash suggests they all hold hands. They all do so except Shana is afraid to hold Brawly's hand. May asks Shana why she won't hold Brawly's hand since she is Brawly's girlfriend. Apparently, Shana isn't Brawly's girlfriend yet. Brawly insists that Shana takes his hand. Shana finally does. Suddenly, lightning strikes a rock. The rock breaks in many pieces. The pieces head down to Ash and co. Brawly sends out Hariyama. Hariyama uses Arm Thrust to preven the rock from getting any closer. Then lightning strikes a tree. The tree begins to fall, but Pikachu destroys the tree with Thunderbolt. Suddenly, Team Rocket lands right infront of Ash and co. They plea for mercy. Brawly tells Team Rocket that they can come with them.

Ash and co. have made it into the cave. There are some other Pokémon in the cave too. Brawly states that the hurricane should be gone by the next day. May notices that Shana is sitting by herself away from the group. She asks Shana to come over, but Shana doesn't want to. Brock then asks Brawly why he didn't make Shana one of her apprentices. Brawly tells them that Shana is a great trainer, but she can't connect with Pokémon well. Brawly invites Shana over, and she eventually does come over and sits with everyone else. Brawly then thinks about nature and how powerful nature can be. Humans are powerless against nature, and there is no point in trying to stop it. Team Rocket notices the fire between the group. Brawly invites Team Rocket to be with them. Team Rocket gladly accepts their invitation.

The next day, the hurricane comes to an end. The Pokémon that were in the cave have left. Suddenly, Team Rocket blocks the exit to the cave. They say their motto to everyone. Jessie sends out Seviper and James sends out Cacnea. Both Pokémon attack Pikachu, but Pikachu dodges the attacks. Pikachu is about to use Thunderbolt, but Brawly stops it. The walls to the cave will crumble if Pikachu launches an electric attack. Brawly sends out Hariyama. Hariyama attacks Team Rocket, blasting them off again.

Shana asks Ash for a rematch. Ash accepts Shana's offer. Shana uses her Meditite and Ash chooses Pikachu. The battle begins. Meditite uses Focus Punch, but Pikachu dodges the attack. Then Pikachu uses Quick Attack, but Meditite uses Detect to dodge the attack. Meditite begins to meditate. Right before Pikachu can tackle Meditite, Meditite dodges Pikachu's attack. Shana has completely changed her battle strategy. Now that Shana is connected with her Meditite, she has a much more improved chance of winning. Meditite then prepares for a Hi Jump Kick attack. Pikachu and Ash close their eyes. Just before Meditite can hit Pikachu, Pikachu dodges the attack. Then Pikachu shocks Meditite with Thunderbolt knocking it out.

Brawly congratulates Ash for his victory. Shana also thanks Ash for a good battle. She is not afraid to lose anymore. Because Shana has learned how to connect with her Pokémon, Brawly has decided to make Shana her apprentice. Shana is so happy that she finally is Brawly's apprentice. Ash then asks Brawly for a rematch. Brawly agrees to their battle. Brawly has already chosen the perfect spot for their rematch. He leads the group to an island. A path appears so that they can get to the island. Ash hopes to win his second badge this time.
