Script Error

"Porta Vista" is the English dub name for Aopulco, but in episode 19, it became the dub name for Hatoba because they were trying to pretend there never WAS an Aopulco.

When the English dub finally went back and aired "Beauty and the Beach" on June 24th, 2000, almost 2 years after episode 17 aired, they had to name THAT Porta Vista as well. In the English dub, episode 18 and 19 take place in the same resort.

Narrator (EP 17 English Dub): ...and arrive at the beautiful town of Porta Vista!
Narrator (EP 18 English Dub): Now our heroes have arrived at the beautiful resort island of Porta Vista...
Narrator (EP 19 English Dub): We find our heroes stranded at Porta Vista,

The Japanese version had subtitles for Crab 「???」even though it didn't say anything. The English version did not include them.

Culture Reference

The Japanese gift giving holidays were changed in the English dub as very few people outside of Japan would have known the specific Chūgen (中元) and oseibo (お歳暮) references.

English Dub
Jessie: Oh! I've lost the Pokéball with the Ekans I got for my birthday last year!
James: Oh! The Pokéball with the Koffing I got for christmas!
Japanese
Musashi: Also, the monster ball with the Arbo I received as a seasonal summer gift is gone!
Kojiro: Speaking of which, the monster ball containing the Dogas I got as a winter gift is gone!
05:11

Paint Edit

The Japanese version had subtitles for Yadon 「......」even though it didn't say anything. The English version did not include them.
07:29

Paint Edit

The English dub suggests that Meowth has a master but in the Japanese version, Nyarth is complaining that he wants to do bad things without Arbo and Dogas' masters Musashi and Kojiro being around to give them orders.

Meowth: My master's not around and I always seem to act like a rat!
Nyarth: No way! But I want to do bad things even without a master around.
10:40

Paint Edit

Musashi and Kojiro run into a sign that states 'KEEP OUT'. The Japanese version had '立入禁止 KEEP OUT'. The English dub removed tachiiri kinshi (立入禁止) and redid the English 'KEEP OUT' to make it larger.
10:48

Paint Edit

Moments later another view of the sign is seen which makes it easier to see tachiiri kinshi
11:11

Paint Edit

The word Oden (おでん) was removed in the English version.
11:29

Paint Edit

The Japanese version included subtitles of the Pokémon talking at the Oden (おでん) hut. The English version did not dub or translate the subtitles for this scene.

Japanese Translation
Not all people are bad, you know."
。。」 "There, there..."
Cheer up."
I know."
I know that."
That's how the world is."
。。」 "Hey, pops..."

12:03

Paint Edit

The English dub added subtitles for a scene that the Japanese version did not have subtitles for. In the English dub Pikachu says: "It's morning." but in the Japanese version he just makes his standard 'Pika!' (ピカ!) noise.
19:12

Paint Edit

The Japanese version had a sign on the Gyarados boat labeled "POCKE MON LAND". The English version changed it to "POKÉMON LAND".
19:45

Paint Edit

The same spelling change occurred moments later on the Gyarados boat sign.

Summary:
At sea, Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi and the Rocket Gang were blown away by the Gyarados' "Dragon Rage" twister. While in the twister, Satoshi lost hold of both Pikachu and the monster balls containing Hitokage, Zenigame and Fushigidane. Thus, Satoshi's 3-man group, Pikachu and the three Pokémon, and the Rocket Gang duo all got washed up on separate shores on an island.

Satoshi's group and the Pokémon group both started searching for each other, but there seems to be something a little strange about this island. It appears to be inhabited by lots of giant Pokémon. Just where on Earth is this island?
