English Official Summary

The first quarterfinal battle of the Sinnoh League at Lily Of The Valley Island has Ash pitted against his rival Paul. This round is a full battle, with each side using a full party of six Pokémon. As Ash switches out his first three Pokémon—Pikachu, Infernape, and Staraptor—there’s something quite familiar about it to Paul. In fact, Ash appears to be using the same Pokémon team he used in their first full battle at Lake Acuity! Paul begins the battle with Aggron, then Gastrodon, and brings his Drapion out after the first two are quickly defeated. Watching the battle on television, Paul’s brother Reggie notices that Paul is well aware of Ash’s strategies. Reggie is convinced that Paul allowed Ash to take the first two wins as part of his overall plan! After Ash switches Staraptor out for Buizel, Drapion catches Buizel in its pincer tail! We leave the scene with Ash screaming at Buizel to “get out of there!”—and as the action gets more and more intense, we have no choice but to wonder how this incredible match will ultimately play out!

Finnish Official Summary

Lily Of The Valley -saarella oteltavan Sinnoh-liigan neljännesvälierän ensimmäisessä ottelussa Ash joutuu vastakkain vanhan vastustajansa, Paulin, kanssa. Kyseessä on täysottelu, jossa molemmilla on käytössään kuusi Pokémonia.

Scene Cut

The English dub removed Team Rockets lines completely during the opening segment while they are in the crowd trying to sell goods.

Kojiro: We have lunch boxes!
Musashi: Rice crackers and caramel!
02:34

Script Error

Satoshi in the Japanese original calls Mitsuzoh-san by his given name and title. Ash in the English dub just calls him by his title.

Ash: Gliscor learned a lot from battling the Air Battle Master.
Satoshi: The battle it had against Air Battle Master Mitsuzoh-san was helpful.
02:53

Script Error

Satoshi states in the Japanese original that he is still nervous (緊張感) about the upcoming battle after remembering the full battle at Lake Eichi. Ash in the English dub just says he's thought about the previous full battle a lot.

Ash: I've given it a ton of thought, and I've got the whole thing figured out.
Satoshi: My nervousness reminds me of the full battle at Lake Eichi.
05:22

Script Error

A fatal flaw in the English dub here with their usage of tenses. In the Japanese version, Shinji indicates that he is beginning to respect Satoshi as his rival by saying that he 'used' to dislike him. This indicates a past tense usage meaning that he no longer completely 'dislikes' Satoshi.

In the English dub though, Paul specifically states: "I just don't like him." Don't is present tense which means he currently still does not like Ash. This is completely opposite to the Japanese original.

Paul: I just don't like him.
Shinji: I used to dislike him.
07:46

Script Error

The English dub corrects an error in the Japanese original where Takeshi says that Metal Sound decreases the opponent's defense Metal Sound lower an opponent's special defense

Brock: Metal Sound is a move that's used to lower your opponent's special defense.
Takeshi: Metal Sound is a move that decreases the opponent's defense.
08:50

Scene Cut

During the Japanese eyecatch return, Satoshi actually says which Pokémon he is sending out, something that was cut out of the English dub. Infernape just comes out of its Poké ball.

Satoshi: Goukazaru, I choose you!
13:19

Script Error

The English dub leaves out Hikari's critical point which indicates that Shinji learned of the counter shield during his full battle with Satoshi when Pikachu showed it and now Paul is now using that move against him this time.

Dawn: And Pikachu used it during the Lake Acuity battle.
Hikari: Pikachu used it and showed it to him at Lake Eichi.
13:25

Script Error

Brock has been watching a bit too much American Idol and his commentary is beginning to sound too much like Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell's famous catch phrase "make it your own", which means taking the original and modifying it to match your own style. That additional part makes sense in context but Takeshi in the Japanese original just says Paul learned from the battle.

Brock: He took what he saw from their battle and made it his own!
Takeshi: He made use of that full battle.
13:41

Script Error

Reggie in the English dub doesn't specifically reference the fact that Ash had gained momentum by defeating Aggron. Reggie actually states the opposite in the English dub by saying Paul stopped Ash before he started gaining momentum.

Reggie: There's a side of Paul that hasn't changed, putting Ash off balance with his own moves before he starts gaining momentum is Paul through and through.
Reiji: To think he could shake Satoshi up like that after gaining momentum through Bossgodora's defeat...
16:05

Script Error

Once again the English dub announcer says something other than 'Super Effective' when Ice Beam hits Staraptor in the air.

English Announcer: And Gastrodon unleashes a lightning-quick midair attack on a dazed Staraptor!
Japanese Announcer Translation: Toritodon moves fast in mid-air! It's super effective!
16:47

Script Error

Paul in the English version insults Ash but in the Japanese original he just says he's unbelievable for choosing the same Pokémon from their first full battle.

Paul: Wow, you're pathetic and predictable.
Shinji: Really now... You're unbelievable.

An exciting start to the first of three parts to this battle. As expected, the battle was quite drawn out though I was expecting Rocket Gang to have some kind of scheme which they didn't seem to have. They just sat around and watched like everyone else. Looking forward to the next two weeks.

Part 1 was an interesting start to things. There was some minor character development early on, too. Ironically, copying Satoshi`s Counter Shield was the one thing I hoped Shinji wouldn`t do, yet it seemed like something he would. Drapion seems like it`ll be a powerful opponent, and judging by the preview for next week, will play a greater role in the battle. I`m definitely looking forward to how this turns out. Hopefully they`l have something cool to surprise us by the end.

On a side note, it`s awesome the Glion`s returned, glad to see the leave wasn`t permamnent. But it seems to have gotten a lot bigger xD

The English dub really butchered this episode on numerous occasion and made a few critical errors to the overall character development of Paul. It appears they really didn't spend too much time or any time at all reviewing the Japanese original on this one as some of the spots are the exact opposite.

This was an amazing start of the paul agaisnt ash battle! Love the cliffhanger at the end, what with drapion and buizel going at it.
