Summary
Ash and co. have finally arrived in Rustboro City. However they are enjoying the view before they go to the gym. Ash comes out with a new looking outfit including souveneirs. Brock, May, and Max are embarrassed to see Ash dressed up in a goofy outfit. While they are walking, Max sees a Poliwag hiding under the bench. Poliwag is a bit scared to see Max. The group tells Poliwag that they can help, and Poliwag lightens up. Max picks up Poliwag. He notices some kind of symbol on Poliwag's tail.

A woman then comes up to the group. She thanks them for finding Poliwag. A group of little kids then meets up with the woman. One of the kids looks real scared. The woman's name is Roxanne, and she is teaching the kids about Pokémon. Kenny is scared because he is afraid to touch the Pokémon. Roxanne tells him that there is nothing to be afraid of touching Pokémon. They are about to head back to the Pokémon Trainer's Academy. Roxanne tells Ash and co. that the academy is a school where you can learn lots about Pokémon. Max wants to go to the academy, but Ash wants to get to his gym battle. Roxanne tells Ash that the gym is right next to the academy.

One of the academy's employees guides Ash and co. through the academy. They come to a room where students are studying to become Pokémon doctors. Then the guide leads them to a room for Pokémon contests. May is really interested in this room. Then he leads them to a class that is for Pokémon battles. Max wants to go to Roxanne's class, and Ash wants to head to the gym soon.

Team Rocket is also enjoying the view in Rustboro City. The guide leads Ash and co. to Roxanne's class. When they enter the room, they see Professor Oak on the big screen. Ash says hello to Professor Oak. Professor Oak asks Ash if he has had his battle with Roxanne. Roxanne fills in for Ash and tells the professor that they haven't started yet. Ash is surprised to hear that Roxanne is the gym leader. Before Professor Oak leaves, Max tells Professor Oak that he is a big fan of him. Professor Oak is pleased and then he leaves. A boy named Tommy asks Max a few Pokémon questions, but Max answers them easily. Roxanne invites Max to stay with them for a full day tomorrow.

Roxanne leads Ash and co. to a vault where all of their Pokéballs are stored. Roxanne tells them that their Pokémon are specially trained to obey anyone. Team Rocket is listening in on their conversation. They are surprised to hear that there are Pokémon that will do anything that they told them to do. Team Rocket plans to rob the vault and steal all of the Pokéballs.

At night, Ash continues to train with Pikachu. He tells Pikachu that it has to perfect its Iron Tail attack for the next day. Ash throws rocks at Pikachu, and Pikachu desotroys them all with Iron Tail.

The next day, Max is at Roxanne's class. The class hasn't started yet, and he is already reading a book. A girl sits by Max. Her name is Anita. She tells Max that she doesn't really care for Pokémon that much. Neither does Kenny, and he is afraid to touch them. Roxanne enters the room and the class starts. Ash and Brock are watching the class too. They notice that May is missing. May is in the Pokémon Contest class. She is very excited. Roxanne asks Ash and Brock if they can show their Pokémon to the students. Ash and Brock send out their Pokémon. Roxanne tells her students to listen to what Ash and Brock have to teach because they are very skilled. Brock says that his Lotad can use Water Gun. Lotad instead uses Water Gun on Brock's face.

Ash sees Kenny alone. He walks up to him and tells him not to be scared. Then Ash introduces Pikachu to Kenny. Max tells Kenny that Pikachu is really soft and playful. Tommy gets an idea. He "accidently" trips and falls on Poliwag's tail. Poliwag uses Water Gun at Max and Kenny, although they barely dodge it.

May is still in the Pokémon Contests class. The teacher is about to give a pop quiz when May leaves. Roxanne's group is outside now. Max and Tommy are about to battle each other in a Pokémon battle. They each choose a Pokéball from the container that Roxanne is holding. May catches up with Ash and Brock who are about to watch Max battle. Tommy gets a Magby and Max gets a Poliwag. Max is thinking of the move he should make. Tommy orders Magby to use Flamethrower. Poliwag quickly uses Defense Curl to raise its Defense points. Magby uses Flamethrower again, and Max tells Poliwag to use Belly Drum. Now Poliwag's attack points are raised. Magby continues to use Flamethrower, and Max just has Poliwag raise its Defense.

Suddenly, an alarm sounds. The tour guide comes out and tells Roxanne that all of their Pokéballs from the vault have been stolen. Team Rocket comes shows up in a big Wurmple vehicle. They begin to say their motto. Team Rocket stole all of the Pokéballs. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but Team Rocket hides behind the door to the vehicle. Because Pikachu can't hit Team Rocket, Brock sends out Forretress to battle. Jessie sends out Seviper. Seviper hits Forretress with Poison Tail. May sends out Wurmple. Wurmple fires a String Shot at Team Rocket. James quickly sends out Cacnea. Cacnea breaks the String Shot with Pin Missile.

Max asks Poliwag if it wants to battle Team Rocket. Poliwag says yes. Before Max can call out an attack, Kenny steps in and tells Max that using an offensive attack will work since in his last battle, Max only had Poliwag use defensive attacks. Max thanks Kenny for the great advice. Poliwag uses Water Gun on Seviper. Tommy wants to help too. He has Magby burn Cacnea with Flamethrower. Ash thinks that he should now finish off Team Rocket. Roxanne tells him to stop. She sees that Max, Kenny, and Tommy are finally working together and creating a plan to defeat Team Rocket.

Max has Poliwag distract Team Rocket by using Water Guns. Team Rocket continues to dodge the attacks. Suddenly, Jessie notices that it has gotten to be very hot. Team Rocket realizes that their vehicle is on fire thanks to Magby's Flamethrower attack. Anita then has Pidgey cut the rope that is holding the Pokéballs with Wing Attack. Team Rocket is suffering from the extreme heat. Roxanne decides to finish off Team Rocket. She sends out Geodude. Geodude uses Rollout and tackles the vehicle. The vehicle explodes causing Team Rocket to blast off again.

Kenny now likes Pokémon. Tommy tells Kenny that he isn't so bad after all. Tommy and Max congratulate each other. Even Anita now likes Pokémon. May is happy that they have all become friends. Brock is impressed at Roxanne's Geodude. Brock warns Ash about the battle with Roxanne tomorrow. Ash will have to do some final preparations for his battle.
