Summary

English Official Summary

In the course of a journey, one meets up with many different things. Returning to civilization after a long period of wandering, our heroes find a bridge that reaches 20 kilometers in length. There is no way to reach Sunnytown—on the other side of the bridge—but by crossing. The bridge, however, has been designed especially for bicycles. The party tries to purchase bicycles in order to cross the bridge, but lacking the funds and otherwise at a complete loss, they decide to stop by the Pokémon Center and re-evaluate their plans. At the Pokémon Center, by pure luck, a job awaits them—delivering medicine to Sunnytown.

Script Error

The English dub narrator states that Ash and his friends have left the Safari Zone but the Japanese narrator states that they left Safari Land. Safari Zone is an area in the Safari Land and the name Safari Land is an anime invention.

English Dub Narrator: With fond memories of the Safari Zone fresh in their minds, our heroes continue on their journey.
Japanese Narrator: Leaving behind the fun Safari Land, Satoshi and the others continue on towards a new journey.

01:39

Paint Edit

"P-Center" (P・センター) is removed from the English dub.
01:40

Script Error

The things that the group wants to eat is different between the English and Japanese versions.

Misty: I want a hot dog.
Brock: I want a deep dish extra-cheese pizza!

Kasumi: I'll have curry!
Takeshi: I'll have rice with tea... or no, maybe pancakes.

01:46

Paint Edit

"2F" is removed from the Coffee sign in the English dub. The image of Pikachu and Pika Pika (ピッカー ピッカ-ァ), most likely a shop name, is also removed.
02:10

Paint Edit

Oddly, "Store" which is written in English is removed in the English dub. The words on the sign in the background are also removed.
02:49

Culture Edit

Norman informs Ash and his friends that the bridge is over 10 miles long in the English dub while in the Japanese version he says its 20km long. There is a slight discrepancy in the conversion between distances.
03:24

Script Error

The Cycling Road (サイクリングロード) is a nickname for Route 17 and parts of Route 16 and 18 in the video game. This name is used in the English games as well, but the dub of this episode never refers to the area by that name.

03:24
Unnamed guard: Only the Cycling Road is open.
Norman: The road isn't finished, but the bicycle path is.

05:19
Kasumi: There's nothing to do but set off on bikes along the Cycling Road!
Misty: Even if that means we'll have to zip across the bridge on bikes.

06:05
Nyarth: They're going along the Cycling Road.
Meowth: They're ridin' on the bike path across the bridge.

15:09
Junsa: Hey! Who's causing a ruckus on the Cycling Road?
Jenny: Hey, who's causing all the trouble on this bike path?

20:22
Japanese Narrator: Satoshi and the others were able to save a Pokémon and cross the Cycling Road on top of that.
English Narrator: And so, our brave friends finally saved the sick Pokémon and made it through the storm to Sunny Town.
03:47

Culture Edit

Try not to annoy Joy-san at her P.M.s center.
04:22

Paint Edit

The text P M (Pocket Monsters) and Pika Pika (ピカピカ) on the poster in the background is removed in the English dub.
04:58

Script Error

Originally, Joy says she can't go to Sunny Town herself due to her Pokémon Center currently being undermanned, while in the dub she's too busy treating sick Pokémon.

Joy (Japanese): I'd go myself, but we're undermanned right now, so I can't leave here.
Joy (English): Normally I'd go myself, but I'm too busy with sick Pokémon to leave the center right now.
05:43

Script Error

Originally, Kasumi complains about having to ride a tandem bicycle, while in the dub her issue is with Brock not pedaling.

Kasumi: Geez, there was just a two-seater left.
Misty: Brock, I'm doing all the pedaling!

07:46

Script Error

Takeshi is kinkier than Brock.

Takeshi: I think bad ladies are kinda cool too. Or something. Please scold me!
Brock: I'd do anything for an introduction to a girl like you. Would you go out with me?
12:41

Script Error

The Japanese name of the move Clamp (からではさむ) translates to "clamping with a shell". Misa calls for her Parshen to use this move during her battle with Kasumi, but the dub writers likely didn't recognize the command as the name of a move, and translated the command literally.

Misa: Parshen, Clamp.
Tyra: Cloyster, clamp it with your shell.

13:41

Culture Edit

The gang members call Musashi and Kojiro "anego" (姉御) and "aniki" (兄貴), honorable terms for someone's older sister and one's older brother.
Like the English "sister" and "brother", these are also be used as slangy words of respect among people not related by blood, particularly in gangs.

The dub uses "Big Jess" and "Little Jim" in their place.
13:55

Script Error

The nicknames for Jessie and James from when they were in the bicycler gang were changed a bit in the English dub so that they rhymed. "Musashi of the Chain" (チェーンのムサシ) was changed to "Chainer Jessie" while "Training Wheels Kojiro" (補助輪のコジロウ) was changed to "Trainer James".

13:55
Misa: "Musashi of the Chain".
Tyra: You were "Chainer Jessie!"

14:07
Masa: And "Training Wheels Kojiro".
Chopper: And then there was "Trainer James".

13:59

Culture Edit

In the flashback to their youths, Musashi is dressed in the stereotypical outfit of a delinquent girl ("sukeban").
Pictured is the poster for the Sukeban Deka movie, which one of many franchises to utilize the stereotype.
14:15

Culture Edit

Likewise, Kojiro wears the stereotypical outfit of a delinquent boy ("bancho").
Pictured is the cover to the movie Wolves of the City (不良番長 furyo bancho).
14:37

Script Error

In the dub, the gang members are familiar with Team Rocket, but are unaware Jessie and James are members, while originally they knew Musashi and Kojiro were members of something called the "Rocket Gang", but took it for being a biker gang.
Given that both versions had the Rockets namedrop the organization's name during their motto, the dub rewrite doesn't make all that much sense.

Misa: The members of your "Rocket Gang" all use one-wheelers, don't they?
Musashi: Misa, this ain't no biker gang we're in. It's a legitimate, secret, evil organization!

Tyra: I guess your cycle gang Must save a ton of money on handlebars.
Jessie: Tyra, we're not in a gang, we are members of the famous Team Rocket!
17:19

Culture Edit

Nyarth's "(pearls before swine,) coins before cats" catchphrase becomes his nickname at the end of the episode. Since he has no such catchphrase in the dub, he's just referred to as "Meowth" there.

Masa: Master Coins Before Cats, you show us too, please.
Chopper: Meowth, we'd never leave you behind.

20:09

Culture Edit

Just like earlier, the "aniki" and "anego" terms are replaced with respectful nicknames.

Masa: Please let us call you our brother from now on!
Misa: Our sister!

Chopper: From now on, we're calling you Awesome Ash!
Tyra: Mighty Misty!
20:45

Culture Edit

The final scene of the episode, showing the Rockets biking off into the distance, is likely a reference to the Yatterman series, where most episodes ended with the Dorombo Gang biking off in a similar manner.

I looooved that episode. Just for that 'Support-wheels Kojiro' part. That's something I really miss about the good ol' Rocket Gang (especially in the newer series, like Diamond/Pearl), all the costumes and 'scenes'... and those flashbacks. I've always loved learning about the Rockat Gang's past, especially Kojiro.

Notes and edits from this episode have been added to the episode guide. Not too many this time as the English dub was actually quite accurate for this episode other than just a few notable instances.
