Summary
With the Pacifidlog Town Pokémon Contest coming up, May continues to cram some training in with her Pokémon on the beach of Pacifidlog Island. She orders Bulbasaur to use Petal Dance, Beautifly to use Silver Wind, and Combusken to use Fire Spin. The attacks come out beautifully as May turns to Skitty to tell it to use Blizzard, only to see that it’s gone!

She finds the cat playing over by an Aipom’s tail. Scanning the beach - upon which a Rhydon, an Azurill, a Mightyena, a Nidorino, a Shroomish, a Phanpy, and Swablu are training - May says that there is only one month left until the Grand Festival. With May training for the Contest and the Grand Festival, Ash decides to work on Snorunt’s Ice Beam attack and releases the happy little Pokémon. Snorunt uses the Attack and ends up hitting Ash and freezing his hat and parts of his face.

As Ash trains with Snorunt, Team Rocket watches from behind a piece of fake grass. They move in, using the grass as cover, to steal Pikachu but end up getting frozen with a stray Ice Beam. The Ice Beam also goes on to hit several trainers with their Pokémon - Zigzagoon, Trapinch, and Marill. The Aipom from before gets scared out of its wits and runs off with Skitty close in tow. Aipom pops through the bushes, crosses a bridge, and turns left. Skitty pops through the bushes, crosses the bridge, and turns right. May ends up losing it as Ash finally gets Snorunt under control.

Back in town, May spots Skitty watching a cattail held up by a man. May calls out and Skitty jumps back to her. The man, named Joshua, tells May that he’ll be entering the Pacifidlog Contest. As May talks to Joshua, a girl walks up some nearby stairs from the beach, and sees them. She instantly appears to be angry for some reason. Joshua gives May a drink and a chair as they talk; the girl walks up and yells at Joshua for talking to May. After a ton of ranting, the girl named Erika tells May that her dream is to win the Pacifidlog Island Contest with Joshua and having them both being awarded with a half of the Ribbon.

She releases her Pokémon, a Jynx, and tells May that she’ll be entering the Contest too. May looks up Jynx in her Pokédex as Erika hugs it and the others all walk up with May’s Pokémon. After some introductions, a giant arm snatches Pikachu from Ash’s shoulder and Snorunt from the ground. Saying their motto, Team Rocket starts to float away. Ash tries having Pikachu to use Thunderbolt, but it doesn’t work. May orders Beautifly to use Tackle, and the Pokémon fall from the balloon. May calls for Sky Uppercut from Combusken; the balloon crashes as Ash and Brock free Pikachu and Snorunt. Jessie releases Seviper and James sends in Cacnea. The needle Pokémon gives him another painful hug. Jessie orders Seviper to use Haze and then Bite while Cacnea aims a Needle Arm. With May unable to see, Joshua sends in a Houndoom and orders it to use Swift to block the attacks. Erika begins to get mad as Joshua and May work together. Jessie calls for Poison Tail with a Pin Missile from Cacnea. Houndoom blocks them with Flamethrower.

May yells out for Petal Dance from Bulbasaur as Seviper and Cacnea use Bite and Needle Arm, respectively. Skitty uses an Assist and ends up with a Fire Spin while Houndoom uses Shadow Ball. The attack forms a combination and hits Team Rocket hard. Erika’s temper flares even more as Pikachu and Snorunt are free. May tries to call out Assist but May sends in Jynx with a Hyper Beam to send Team Rocket blasting off again.

With Team Rocket gone, Joshua, Erika, and May head for the Contest Hall to register. Fireworks fly sky-high as the Contest draws closer to starting.

In the Contest Hall, Jessie tells Meowth that he’ll be entering the Contest for her. He flat out refuses until a Persian that will also be entering walks past. Its trainer, an old lady, says that the Contest will be easy to win. Meowth changes face and says that he’ll enter after remembering Giovanni’s Persian always taunting him.

The Contest begins with Vivian introducing the panel of judges: Mr. Contesta, Sukizo, and Pacifidlog’s Nurse Joy. She then introduces Coordinator #1: The Jesster, who is really Jessie in disguise. The Jesster and Meowth descend from the ceiling on a platform hoisted by James as smoke billows around them. Jesster orders Meowth to use Fury Swipes on a giant block of ice to make an Ice Art Extravaganza called “Boss of My Heart.” The statue turns out to be of Giovanni and Persian. Everyone thinks it’s beautiful, except Brock who thinks it is strangely familiar. Meowth then changes Persian to a Meowth with a quick Fury Swipes as the crowd cheers. Vivian introduces Coordinator #2: Juanita, as May and Erika argue while Joshua watches nervously.

Outside, Ash continues to train Snorunt’s Ice Beam attack. It fails again so Snorunt does it one more time, causing Ash and Pikachu to duck. Sitting on the ground, Ash looks up at the screen to see Joshua doing his Contest Appeal. He calls for Houndoom to make a Shadow Ball and Swift combo. The crowd cheers again as Joshua exits the stage.

Erika’s Appeal also goes well. She has Jynx use a Blizzard and Psychic combination to create a swirling tornado of snow. Finally, May’s turn comes up. She sends in Skitty and orders an Assist. The random attack produces a Razor Leaf from Bulbasaur so May uses it to her advantage by having Skitty use Blizzard to freeze them and then Doubleslap to create sparkles that float down on the crowd. Joshua claps for May, but stops hastily as Erika glares at him.

As May heads back into the waiting room, a Spheal claps with its trainer. Ash enters the room and compliments May. Vivian then announces that four Coordinators will move on to the next round. She announces Joshua, The Jesster, and then Erika. May waits in suspense to see if her Grand Festival chances are over or not. Vivian announces the last Coordinator, and it is May. The pairings for the first round of the battles are then matched: The Jesster VS Erika and May VS Joshua. May holding Skitty, she and Erika glare at each other as the Battle Round draws closer...
