Summary

Japanese Summary Translation:

Having just managed to escape from the uninhabited island, Satoshi and friends arrive at Aopulco, said to be the greatest resort in the world. Palm trees line up against beautiful beaches as far as the eye can see... and Satoshi and friends begin their vacation.

But as Satoshi rides around in a cruiser owned by old man Ryu, the proprietor of a beach shack, he ends up destroying it. And while Satoshi and friends start working part-time to pull in customers for him to cover the repair costs, his rival Obaba uses Musashi and Kojiro of the Rocket Gang to disturb his business.

Just then, Professor Okido and Satoshi's mother Hanako come by, being on a tour arranged by the neighborhood committee. At Professor Okido's suggestion, Satoshi and friends decide to hold a "Tanned Beauty and Masquerading Pokémon Contest"...

Script Error

"Porta Vista" is the English dub name for Aopulco, but in episode 19, it became the dub name for Hatoba because they were trying to pretend there never WAS an Aopulco.

When the English dub finally went back and aired "Beauty and the Beach" on June 24th, 2000, almost 2 years after episode 17 aired, they had to name THAT Porta Vista as well. In the English dub, episode 18 and 19 take place in the same resort.

Narrator (EP 17 English Dub): ...and arrive at the beautiful town of Porta Vista!
Narrator (EP 18 English Dub): Now our heroes have arrived at the beautiful resort island of Porta Vista...
Narrator (EP 19 English Dub): We find our heroes stranded at Porta Vista,

The English dub narrator states that Ash and his friends had a breathtaking roller coaster ride in Pokémon Land but doesn't mention them being lost in the jungle like the Japanese version.

English Dub Narrator: Last time, Ash and his friends ended their exploits in Pokémon Land with a breathtaking roller coaster ride, but trainers and Pokémon were happily reunited in a daring last minute leap of faith.

Japanese Narrator: Satoshi, the Pokémon, and the others had been scattered. Wandering and roaming about the jungle one way or another, they just barely managed to reunite.

Misty's line was completely changed to make it look like she was waiting for Ash and Brock. She also asks how the water is. The Japanese version has Kasumi referring to herself by her game title; the "Tomboyish Mermaid" (おてんば にんぎょ) instead. This is one of the only times she refers to herself as the "Tomboyish Mermaid" in the anime.

Misty: I though you guys were going to wait for me by the snack bar. How's the water?
Kasumi: The idol of the beach, the Tomboyish Mermaid Kasumi-sama comes forth.
02:38

Scene Cut

In the original airing of this episode, a single-frame animation easter egg can be seen when Kasumi hits Satoshi with her beach ball. This frame, and the flashing impact stars during that scene, were replaced with a still frame of an impact star in later versions.

Pikachu's sign reads "The Greatest in Japan" (日本一)

Script Error

Apparently Japanese Satoshi is a bit smarter than English Ash as he was able to identify the part of the boat that was broken.

Ash: Something broke!
Satoshi: The rudder isn't working!
04:10

Paint Edit

Watch out for those stationary docks that love to randomly crash into out of control boats!

Ash: The dock hit us.
Satoshi: We're safe.

In the Japanese version, Ryu is an old pervert that likes younger girls. Kasumi is 10 years old according to PM003 which Kasumi states: "This is absolutely the worst morning I've had in my 10 years of life!". 8 years later she would be 18 years old. Wikipedia states: "The national age of consent in Japan is 13 as specified by the Japanese Penal Code Articles 176 and 177. However, prefectures can have ordinances that prohibit sexual activities with any minor under 18."

Moe: You remind me of my granddaughter.
Ryu: I look forward to you in eight years.
04:39

Script Error

Nyarth complains that his paws are wet in the Japanese version.

Meowth: I wanted to hit the beach but not like this...
Nyarth: My paws are soaked.
04:54

Paint Edit

In the background is a sign that states: Obaba's Store (オババの店).

The food that Ash and Brock are advertising is different than what Satoshi and Takeshi were offering.

English Dub:
Brock: French-fried flounder! Seven layered crab cakes! Get 'em while they're cold!
Ash: Try our new squid on a stick!
Brock: And our clam juice snow cones!

Japanese:
Takeshi: Welcome, welcome!
Takeshi: This is the two-in-one shower and ramen hut, Beach Shack Ryu!
Satoshi: Anyone want to take a break here?
Takeshi: We even have shave ice!
05:50

Script Error

Brock thinks Jessie looks pretty good in her waitress outfit in the English dub but Takeshi in the Japanese version wonders why she is working for Obaba.

Brock: Jessie looks pretty good in that uniform too!
Takeshi: Why are those guys working?
06:35

Paint Edit

The sign below the window sill states: Grilled Corn (焼きとうもろこし).

It is present in both the English and Japanese versions as the English dub did not paint out the Japanese text.
07:24

Paint Edit

The Japanese version originally had the English words "GAS" and "OIL" on the canisters but the English dub painted the words out.
09:16

Script Error

As Team Rocket leaves the hut they all say that Ash and his friends deserve what's happened to them. In the English dub, the line is replaced with a line from James.

James: We'll pick it up tomorrow!
Rockets: This feels like it serves you right!
09:35

Paint Edit

The sign states 'Ice' (氷). Takeshi states in the episode that they have Shaved Ice (かき氷).

11:50

Script Error

Brock specifically states that the prize is $1,000 for each category.

Brock: There's a $1,000 prize for the winner in each category. It's not to late to sign up, so hurry and enter.
Takeshi: We'll prepare a wonderful prize for the winner, so don't hesitate to participate!
11:50

Paint Edit

The sign over top of the stage states: Tanned Beauty and Masquerading Pokémon Contest (日焼美女と仮装ポケモンコンテスト)

It is present in both the English and Japanese versions as the English dub did not paint out the Japanese text.
13:51

Scene Cut

A 30 second clip that features Kasumi, Musashi and Kojiro in bikini's was removed from the English dub. The scene features Kojiro with inflatable breasts. The scene features the crowd cheering for Musashi and Kojiro but the English dub's cut makes it look like they are cheering for Misty. Below is the missing scene's translation.

Character Translation Japanese
Musashi We'll be taking first place. 優勝は私たちがいただくわ。
Kasumi Kojiro! What's the deal, aren't you a guy? コジロウ!何よ あんた男でしょ!?
Kojiro It's all right. My beauty isn't specific to a man or a woman. いいの。 私の美しさには男も女もないの。
Musashi The little brat's in the way. Get lost over there. コジャリはおじゃまり。あっちへお行き。
Kojiro Well then, some service, service. さ~てと サービスサービス。
Kojiro There we go. あ そ~れ。

15:15

Script Error

Shigeru calls all the girls that are with him his girlfriends in the Japanese version but the English dub calls them his fanclub.

Gary: ...but I didn't come here to make you jealous of me Ash, I came here so of my beautiful fanclub member could make you jealous of me!
Shigeru: It's not that I'm opposing someone like you but I just thought I'd show off my girlfriends!
15:52

Scene Cut

Another scene featuring Musashi and Kojiro was deleted from the English dub. The scene showed the two of them with their large cleavage showing.

Musashi: Is he saying those women are more beautiful than me?
Musashi: Stop kidding around!
Kojiro: I'm prettier than them!
20:45

Paint Edit

The trophy inscription was changed completely in the English dub.

It's possible that the English crew were lazy and they not paint over most of the Japanese signs. After all, has anyone seen a professor speaking English holding a JAPANESE magazine, but still understanding it?

Maybe he learnt a lot of Japanese before he came.
