Summary
At the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy gives Ash a message. The message says to give Professor Oak a call. Ash calls Professor Oak on the phone. Professor Oak answers and they have a little conversation. Muk has been doing well as it is toppling all over Professor Oak. Then Professor Oak tells Ash about the Pokédex Upgrade. He tells him to put is Pokédex in the slot and it'll get upgraded. The professor upgrades Ash's Pokédex and he sends it back to him. Professor Oak tells Ash to capture more Pokémon and Ash says that he'll do so.

Ash and his friends have stopped at a restaurant and they wonder where they should go to next. Brock is cleaning the Pokémon Egg. Ash wonders when it will hatch. To keep it nice and warm, Brock tells them that he sleeps with the egg. Misty wants the egg to hatch into a Tentacruel. Team Rocket is listening on their conversation. They plan to steal the Pokémon Egg. Ash and his friends walk out of the Pokémon Center. Suddenly, two odd woman carrying baskets comes their way. They are selling Pokémon Eggs and they ask for them to buy some. Ash says that they already have a Pokémon Egg and they ask to see it. Brock takes it out. On the count of three, the two people dump all the eggs on them knocking the Pokémon Egg out of Brock's hands. Then they reveal themselves as Team Rocket. They say their motto but Ash and his friends aren't paying attention. They are busy looking for the Pokémon Egg. Meowth has the egg and they run away with it.

In Team Rocket's cabin, James suggests that they cook it. Meowth hits him with a pan and decides to warm it with its body. Meowth eats with it, bathes with it, and sleeps with it. During the day, Ash and co. follow a trail of eggs that Team Rocket left behind. The trail leads them straight to their cabin. They look through the window to see what Team Rocket is doing. They see the egg and Ash sends out Pidgeotto, Misty sends out Staryu, and Brock sends out Geodude. All three Pokémon burst in and they steal the egg. Meowth gets mad that its egg is gone and Jessie and James send out Arbok and Weezing. Weezing uses a Smokescreen attack which blinds them for a few seconds. Arbok attacks Ash but he dodges. Meowth comes and scratches Ash and then it picks up the egg. Geodude tackles Meowth and the egg slips out of its hands. Ash dives for it but misses and Pikachu now has the egg. The egg starts to move in Ash's hands. The egg begins to crack open.

Misty pushes them to the side and the egg opens. A Togepi is revealed and stares at Misty. Pikachu thunderbolts Team Rocket and Ash and his friends run away.

At a nearby park, Ash wonders what kind of Pokémon Togepi is. He remembers that his Pokédex got upgraded and so he checks that. Then they start to fight on who should keep Togepi. Meowth comes and exclaims that he should keep Togepi because he took care of it. Ash wants to have a Pokémon battle and whoever wins gets to keep Togepi. Team Rocket agrees to the battle. Meowth disqualifies Jessie and James from battling and so they have to sit out. But both Ash, Misty, and Brock are going to use one Pokémon each.

The first match is with Brock's Onix and Meowth. Onix uses Tackle and hits Meowth. However Meowth gets back up and heavily uses Scratch attack. The Scratch attack has no effect on Onix and then Onix uses Rock Throw. Meowth barely dodges them. Then Meowth sees two buckets of water laying around and he gets an idea. He grabs the buckets of water and sprays Onix with it. Then he does a Fury Swipes and Onix faints. The second match is with Ash and Misty. Ash sends out Bulbasaur and Misty is about to send out her Pokémon when Psyduck pops out. Unfortunately for her, Misty has to use Psyduck for the battle. Bulbasaur licks Psyduck's head and then it tickles Psyduck. Psyduck goes back into its Pokéball and Ash wins. The final battle is with Ash and Meowth. Ash uses Pikachu for the battle. Pikachu uses Thundershock and Meowth faints. Embarrassed, Jessie and James drag Meowth away.

Ash and Brock try to talk to Togepi but nothing happens. Togepi only talks to Misty. Ash takes out its Pokédex and it tells Ash that Togepi thinks that the first thing it seesis its mother. Because Misty was the first thing Togepi saw, Togepi thinks that Misty is its mother. Misty and Togepi happily play with each other.
