Summary
Ash and his friends continue their way back to Pallet Town. Suddenly, they come to a fork in the road. Ash wants to take the path going to the right. Brock comments on how that way leads right to a mountain but Ash doesn't mind. Soon, they come to a mountain full of snow. Misty and Brock wants turn back but Ash says a Pokémon Master never changes his course. Misty and Brock are wrapped up in blankets. Brock's compass goes crazy and they have no clue of where they are. Misty blames Ash for coming this way. Ash gets an idea and he sends out Pidgeotto. He tells Pidgeotto to find a trail that will lead them down the mountain. Pidgeotto comes back and he tells Ash to keep on going straight.

On the other side of the mountain is Team Rocket. James and Meowth hate the snow but Jessie loves it. Jessie asks if they ate a "snow-gasbord" before but James and Meowth doesn't even know what it is. Jessie has a flashback of when she was little. Her mother called her in telling her that the snow-gasbords where ready. All the food was made out of snow. James and Meowth were surprised that she ate meals out of snow. James wants to catch up with Ash and co. before sunset. Their balloon comes down and they say their motto. Meowth interrupts them because the balloon is drifting away.

Ash, Misty, and Brock have been walking all day but they aren't even at the top yet. Then it begins to snow. Team Rocket is very disappointed because they don't have their balloon with them. James complains that he's very hungry. Jessie tells them that she can make snow rolls but she needs to get the soy sauce out of the balloon.

Now it's a big blizzard outside. Ash wants to keep going but Brock tells him that they have to set up camp for the night. Suddenly, Pikachu blows out of Ash's arms. Ash goes out in the blizzard and looks for Pikachu. When Ash isn't in their sight anymore, Misty goes but Brock tells her to stay. Ash calls out for Pikachu. Then Pikachu responds and calls out for Ash. Ash finally sees Pikachu hanging off a cliff. Ash tells Pikachu to grab hold of his hand but Pikachus slips even further down. Ash thinks and sends out Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur uses its vines to bring Pikachu up. Before Pikachu can grab on the vines, the cliff gives in and Pikachu falls off it.

Bulbasaur quickly extends its vines and wraps Pikachu around them. Ash pulls Pikachu up and hugs it. Pikachu reminds Ash about Brock and they decide to go back.

Ash calls out for Misty and Brock but they can't hear him, so Ash decides to make a snow cave. Ash has Charmander to use Flamethrower to make a snow cave. It works and Ash sends out Squirtle and Bulbasaur to help seal off the cave's entrance. When that's finished, everyone gets around Charmander's flame.

Team Rocket is in their igloo. Meowth holds a candle but it burns out. Meowth takes out three burnt out matches. James says that if they just pretend that the matches are heating lamps then they can keep themselves warm. Meowth pretends that he's in a hot spring, James pretends that he's on a beach, and Jessie imagines herself on a desert. When Jessie is done imagining, she sees that James and Meowth are sleeping. Jessie slaps them hard to wake them up.

Charmander begins to get very tired and its flames wears down. Ash brings Charmander back into its Pokéball even though Charmander didn't want to go back. Ash wants Squirtle and Bulbasaur to go back into their Pokéballs but they don't want to. Ash puts them back anyways. Ash wants Pikachu to go back too but Pikachu refuses. It wants to stay out to keep Ash warm. Ash takes off his jacket and he wraps his Pokéballs inside it. Suddenly, a bit of the snow that was sealing the entrance falls and a cold drift comes in. Ash sits in front of it. Then Ash commands Pikachu to get inside its Pokéball but Pikachu still refuses. Then all of Ash's Pokémon come out and they help keep Ash warm.

The next day, the blizzard stops and Charmander burns down the snow. Misty and Brock are above and call out to Ash. Ash turns around and he sees them. Onix pulls Ash up. They wonder how Ash survived and Ash says that they built a cave. Misty tells him that Onix dug right into a hot spring. They look ahead and they see Team Rocket's balloon so they decide to keep it. Brock brings out Vulpix so that it can refuel the balloon. Then they lift off in it.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is pinching each others cheeks. Then they see their balloon. They chase it but they end up in a hot spring instead. Ash sees Pallet Town right up ahead and they cheer. A breeze picks up and Team Rocket continues to bathe in the hot springs. Meowth complains that it's too hot in the hot springs but it's too cold out in the snow.

Note

Due to the show being put on hold following the Porygon incident, some seasonally thematic episodes were postponed and aired outside of their intended order. This episode, along with episode 65, is intended to be set between episode 38 and 39.
01:58

Script Error

Misty states she'd need a ski lift in the English version but in the Japanese original Kasumi was concerned about the snow on the mountain.

Misty: This isn't a hill. We'd need a ski lift to get up this thing, Ash.
Kasumi: A mountain's one thing, but I heard nothing about a snow-covered peak!
02:07

Paint Edit

The Japanese Title card indicates that this episode is a Bonus Episode (番外編).

The French word Bivouac (ビバーク) used in the title is a term to describe a shelter created from the natural environment in the area.
02:35

Script Error

Takeshi states that a strong magnetic field is causing the compass to not work properly. Brock states its the iron causing it.

Brock: The compass went crazy. This mountain must have so much iron that it's throwing the needle off.
Takeshi: The compass isn't working. It seems like this mountain has a magnetic field.

04:20

Script Error

The English dub adds the term Snow-gasbord to describe Musashi's snow feast. The Japanese version does not give an actual term and just calls it a feast. Meowth and James are confused in the English dub as they wonder what a Snow-gasbord is.

Jessie: Don't tell me that you've never eaten a snow-gasbord?
Musashi: Eh? What are you saying? A snowy day means you get to have a huge feast, right?
04:26

Script Error

Jessie calls her childhood "wretched" but Musashi doesn't comment on her childhood lifestyle at all.

Jessie: Snow-gasbord. One of the few cherished memories of my otherwise wretched childhood.
Musashi: Back in the day, I got to eat as much as I wanted on snowy days.
04:40

Script Error

The English dub changed what Jessie had to eat for her "Snow-gasbord".

English Translation Japanese
Snow loaf with snow sauce Snow rice balls, as in snow wrapped in laver
Sushi snow rolls Vinegared laver rolls with grains of snow instead of white rice
Ida-snow potatoes with snow sour cream Snow sushi without toppings
Snow pudding Syrup-free plain shaved ice

04:54

Script Error

Jessie refers to the woman giving her the snow food as her 'mommy' but the Japanese original does not give any indication who the woman in the flashback is at any time during the episode. Musashi in fact actually hopes Heaven/God wouldn't be mad at her for enjoying such luxury.

Jessie: This is the best snow-gasbord any mommy ever made.
Musashi: I hope Heaven won't punish me for enjoying such luxury...
05:07

Script Error

Nyarth in the Japanese original is actually surprised that Musashi hasn't had real sushi. Musashi also notes that snow sushi gave her brain freeze. Meowth also reiterates in the English dub that the person she was describing was her mother.

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth You must be joking. You mean, your mother actually made meals out of snow? Musashi, could it be that you never ate real sushi?
Jessie We had to make do. Besides, snow food is low in fat And helped me maintain my fabulous figure. What do you mean by "real"? "Sushi" is just short for "snow sushi", right?
Jessie A snow roll with just a dash of soy sauce. Mmm, there's nothing like it. The mixture of snow and soy sauce leaves such a rich flavor as it freezes your brain and melts atop your tongue.

06:20

Script Error

Takeshi is actually relieved in the Japanese original as they don't have to climb. Brock though complains that they've been walking all day and hadn't reached the top of the mountains yet.

Brock: Brr. We've been walking all day, and we're not even at the top.
Takeshi: The road is finally starting to go downhill.
07:25

Script Error

4Kids in the English dub added a pun for Meowth based on the word 'ketchup' as Team Rocket needed to 'catch up' to their balloon which had got away from them.

Meowth: I think I'd rather ketchup on my snow rolls.
Nyarth: Musashi sure can be dangerous when food is involved.
07:45

Script Error

The English dub removed the pun on the word bivouac that was in the original Japanese version as Onix really doesn't rhyme with it unlike Iwark [Iwaaku (イワーク)].

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock I think we'd better stop and set up camp for the night. We should probably just make a bivouac!
Ash Huh? But that trail's gotta be close. Huh? What about Iwark?
Brock Come on, Ash. There's no way we'll find anything in this blizzard. I said "bivouac"! We dig a hole and wait there until the blizzard dies down!

13:30

Paint Edit

The match that Nyarth was holding in the original was changed to a candle in the English dub.
13:45

Scene Cut

A scene that features Nyarth holding a match which then goes out and shows him lighting a new match is removed completely from the English dub. The scene also talks about sushi and soy sauce.

Character Translation Japanese
Musashi I've got some freshly-fallen, energetic material here.
Kojiro You're in high spirits today, Maestro?
Musashi Of course. Getting upset spoils the sushi.
Musashi Come on, eat up.
Kojiro I'll pass. …
Nyarth Musashi, you should eat it.
Musashi I don't want it, either.
Kojiro What do you mean?
Musashi There's no soy sauce, after all.
Kojiro Even if there was soy sauce, I'd still pass.

13:59

Script Error

After editing out the first instance of a lit match with a candle and then removing the whole 17 second from the previous scene, the English dub acknowledges that Team Rocket did have matches as Meowth indicates that all they have left is 3 burnt out matches. In the Japanese original though, Nyarth doesn't indicate that they are used matches.

Meowth: Now all we've got left are burnt-out matches.
Nyarth: There are only three matches left!
14:05

Script Error

Musashi references the short story The Little Match Girl by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen when Musashi acknowledges her current situation is similar to the girl from the story.

Character English Translation Japanese
Kojiro If we pretend they're actually heating lamps, maybe that will be enough to keep us warm. One per person. Let's entrust a fleeting dream to the matches' flames.
Musashi We just have to use our imagination. Just like The Little Match Girl...

14:10

Scene Cut

This scene was edited in the English dub to have Meowth's talking looped while in the Japanese original the scene features Nyarth lighting and holding up his last lit match. Jessie as part of the previous conversation suggests they use their imagination to warm up.

Meowth: I'll try anything to warm up.
Nyarth: Here we go.
15:23

Paint Edit

The Best Wishes episode Get Fired Up, Lizardon! VS Kairyu!! featured high definition reanimated scenes of this episode. In the reanimated scene, some of the feathers on Ash's Pidgeotto's head are colored yellow like Ash's Pidgeot. Pidgeotto do not have yellow feathers on their heads.
