Significant changes were made to the dialog for the scene outside the lighthouse when Ash and his friends were attempting to convince Bill to let them inside. The major changes were the food items Brock was suggesting he could cook and the fact that Bill replied that he hasn't had anything but tofu since his cook went on vacation. In the Japanese version, Masaki doesn't even reference the fact that he has a cook.

Japanese Translation:
Takeshi: Um, if you can lend your kitchen, I can make some delicious egg fried rice.
Takeshi: Of course, I brought along my own wok.
Masaki: Rather than fried rice, can you make fried noodles?
Takeshi: Yeah. Katayaki, chow mein, sauced yakisoba, they're all okay.
Masaki: I'd love to eat some katayakisoba with ankake sauce. Please, come on in!

English Dub:
Brock: And I wonder if I could use your kitchen to make some bacon double cheeseburgers for our group. And I'd be more than happy to make something for you.
Bill: That's great. Can you cook without using tofu?
Brock: Oh sure, I can cook lots of things without using any tofu.
Bill: That's good. I've been eating nothing but tofu since my cook went on vacation. Come on in.

Ash contacts Professor Oak to find out what happened to his Crab that he just caught to find out that he is just cooking dinner. In the Japanese version, Satoshi is very concerned that Okido is eating his Crab for dinner as he says he's eating "a warm pot of furikake ochazuke". In the English dub, no initial 'fish' reference is made that would tip off Ash that Professor Oak was eating anything else other than fried tofu. Also the Japanese version doesn't reference the fact that Professor Oak has a cook as well that also happens to be on vacation.

Japanese Translation:
Okido: Don't limit yourself to eating warm pots of rice with tea and fish flakes during the rainy season.
Satoshi: That couldn't be my Crab that got sent over.
Okido: Oh, that Crab. I'm taking good care of it.

English Dub:
Oak: My cook is on vacation and I've got to fed for myself till she returns.
Ash: Wait a minute Professor, your not eating my Krabby are you?
Oak: Don't worry. I'm taking good care of your Krabby.

The Japanese version had multiple puns that were removed in the English dub where the scene was completely rewritten. Prior to this scene, Masaki talks about how all being have been "granted life for a reason" "ikite iru ga aru". His last line in this scene is "Kono hoshi ni yoru ari to arayuru ikimono ni ikite iru ga aru" (All beings on this planet have a reason for living.)

When we cut to the Rocket Gang, Musashi directly references this line by saying "Sou yo! Atashi-tachi datte ikite iru ga ARI. ARI to arayuru akuyaku no ichin to shite". - (That's right, we have a reason to live. Every single villain has one.), while adding a pun on the syllables "ari". The others then follow up on the pun, Kojiro replying "ARInko no you ni ganba-ARI" (We have the endurance of an ant), and Nyarth following up with "Nya wa neko nya. 'Neko ni koban' wa ARI-bai" (I'm a cat. Coins before cats is my alibi).

English Dub:
Jessie: Sometimes I wonder what the meaning of it all is. Why go through all this trouble just to be bad.
James: It's so we can get other peoples Pokémon.
Meowth: I'm all for it just as long as there is something in it for Meowth.

At the end of the episode, Nyarth makes another pun on the same, "Nya-tachi ni wa ashita ga ARI" (We always have tomorrow), with the two others yelling "Ari ari" as the camera pans away.

English Dub:
Meowth: After all, tomorrow is another day!

A joke that was not covered in the dub featured Musashi dismissing Kojiro worries that they're taking the evilness a bit far by shooting rockets at the biggest Kairyu ever to go unidentified.

She states: 'warui koto wo suru' to kaite 'munashii' to yomu, nante ne! and jokes that Kojiro should just rewrite the furigana so it looks like both. Munashii has a lot more nuance than just "empty" too, but it was the one that sounded the best in English. It's an empty feeling or something empty of meaning.

Japanese Translation:
Kojiro: But what we're doing here just feels kind of empty...
Musashi: Well then write it as 'doing bad stuff' and read it as 'empty'!

English Dub:
James: Do we always have to mess up everyone's plans? Even I think this is rotten!
Jessie: Quit complaining. We could score big with this Pokémon!
