Script Error

Okido wasn't really expecting Satoshi to phone like Professor Oak was in the English dub and Okido didn't state what time of day it was.

Professor Oak: Good morning, Ash. I was just wondering when you might be calling. You have some good news?
Professor Okido: Oh, Satoshi. You look like you have some good news.
02:17

Script Error

Okido talks about Shigeru winning the rivalry currently that he and Satoshi have in the Japanese original but Professor Oak just talks about the new trainers from Pallet Town in general.

Professor Oak: You'd better hurry up, Ash. You don't want to fall further behind the others.
Professor Okido: Right now, Shigeru seems to be winning by quite a margin.
02:23

Script Error

In Mystery at the Lighthouse, Professor Oak in both the English dub and the Japanese original states that Gary/Shigeru has captured 45 Pokémon. But in Primeape Goes Bananas, he states that Gary/Shigeru has captured 30 Pokémon.

Primeape Goes Bananas
Professor Oak: And Gary has already captured 30 Pokémon.
Professor Okido: Why, he's managed to get 30 Pokémon.

Mystery at the Lighthouse @ 9:15
Professor Oak: I want you to know that my grandson Gary has already caught 45 Pokémon.
Professor Okido: My grandchild Shigeru has already got 45 Pokémon.
02:32

Scene Cut

Professor Okido refers to the Pokémon Box storage system in the Japanese original but Professor Oak doesn't mention it in the English dub.

Professor Oak: I haven't gotten any Pokémon from you in a while. Not since the day you sent me Krabby here.
Professor Okido: Ever since you sent me Crab, I've been waiting for the next Pokémon you'd transfer to the Pokémon Box at my place, but...
03:10

Culture Reference

The kanji for longevity (kotobuki 寿) was painted out in the English dub.

The poem is also a bit different as Okido refers to Yōkan in the Japanese original. Professor Oak refers to cake and tea instead as well as making the poem rhyme in the English dub.

Professor Oak: Every day it's cake and tea, just my Pokémon and me.
Professor Okido: With Pokémon there - eating my yokan becomes - oh, so delicious.
03:15

Culture Reference

Professor Oak pretty much states 4Kids stance when it comes to senryu's and haiku's in the English dub. Professor Okido in the Japanese original just states the basic premise of being a Pokémon Trainer in the Japanese original.

Professor Oak: I can't write a good poem without rhymes.
Professor Okido: The basis of Pokémon is to get them.
03:30

Script Error

The English dub changed the rice balls (お握り) into Jelly-filled doughnut.

Character English Translation Japanese
Misty Have a doughnut. That always cheers me up. Well, you'll cheer up after eating a rice ball.
Brock These doughnuts are great! Jelly-filled are my favorite. The round ones have pickled plums. The triangular ones have kelp.
Brock Nothing beats a jelly-filled doughnut. I picked up some pretty good kelp.

04:01

Script Error

Satoshi recalls his earlier conversation with Professor Okido in the Japanese original when he realizes that he needs to press on to catch up with his rivals. In the English dub, instead of Professor Oak's line from earlier, the narrator takes over instead.

English Dub Narrator: Can Ash catch up with his rivals or will he be left in the dust?
Professor Okido: Your rivals already called to inform me that they got through Tamamushi City.
04:19

Script Error

Takeshi specifically references Satoshi's Ghost when discussing the fact that Satoshi would need to catch different types of Pokémon.

Brock: Right. Remember, it's quality over quantity, especially if you've got lots of different Pokémon. Then they'll help you catch others.
Takeshi: And if you gather up Pokémon of various types, like that Ghost the other day, they'll be useful in battle.
04:46

Script Error

Mankey want a donut? (Made of rice, shaped in a triangle, with kelp and no jelly?)

Brock: Maybe it wants a doughnut.
Takeshi: I wonder if it's hungry.
05:07

Script Error

Apparently Brock has his own special donut recipe made without any MSG's! Takeshi in the Japanese original is proud of the rolled rice ball that he made.

Brock: That doughnut is my own special recipe. No artificial ingredients.
Takeshi: That's because I rolled it. The ingredients are great, too.
05:39

Script Error

The infamous Donut Pokémon scene. Kasumi in the Japanese original does not say that Satoshi got a Donut Pokémon like Misty does in the English dub.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash It's a doughnut! I got a rice ball?
Misty A doughnut Pokémon? What are you doing?

05:56

Scene Cut

The English dub removes a line when Ash and friends are running away from Mankey. They just scream instead.

Satoshi/Kasumi: I don't want to be followed!
06:36

Script Error

Satoshi asks Pikachu for help in the Japanese original but it is hesitant to interfere.

Ash: Of course I'm not ok!
Satoshi: Help me, Pikachu!
08:05

Script Error

The history behind Ash's hat is a bit different between the Japanese original and the English dub. Ash in the English dub specifically states that he won it at the official Pokémon league expo and the commercial announcer said it was 1 of 100 that would be given away. Ash also states he sent in about a million postcards to get the hat. The English dub commercial announcer also overuses the word 'official'. Misty also states she didn't realize that the hat she sent in a postcard to get was actually offical, something Kasumi never said in the Japanese original.

Satoshi in the Japanese original says he got the cap as an official prize from the Pokémon League and implies it was sent to him, unlike Ash who said he went to a Pokémon League expo. The commercial announcer also states that everyone has a chance to get the cap. Satoshi specifically states he sent in a 1000 postcards to get the cap.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash I won it at the official Pokémon League expo. That's an important cap I got as an official prize from the Pokémon League.
Announcer Now you have a chance to win one of a hundred Limited edition Pokémon league official hats! You, who's always cheering for the Pokémon League can receive 1 of 100 limited edition replicas of the official League cap as a booming present!
Announcer It's wearable, it's washable, and it's official! Don't miss your chance to win the official hat of the official expo of the official Pokémon League! Apply with all your might and you can all get the official cap!
Brock It's official. That, right?
Misty I didn't know that was an official Pokémon League hat. I remember I entered the same contest, too. They did have that, now that you mention it. I sent in a postcard too.
Ash I had to send in about a million postcards to win that hat! To get that cap, I sent in a thousand postcards!

08:11

Paint Edit

The English dub does not paint over "POCKEMONLEAG" which is supposed to be 'Pokémon League'.
09:31

Script Error

During the Rocket Gang motto, there are sparkles which Musashi and Kojiro acknowledge during their motto by stating 'sparkle' (きら) at the end of their normal motto lines. Team Rocket in the English dub just ignore the fact and say their normal motto lines.
10:11

Scene Cut

The English dub removed a line that Musashi says in the Japanese original.

Musashi: It's mad.
11:32

Script Error

Jessie's line is almost identical to Musashi's except Musashi states that damaging her face is a sin that even outweighs a Kabigon.

Jessie: How dare you damage my perfection! Now you'll pay!
Musashi: Destroying this beautiful face is a sin that even outweighs a Kabigon!
14:40

Script Error

Another dialog line was skipped in the English dub while Team Rocket is digging a hole. Meowth just chuckles instead.

Nyarth: We'll trap everyone at once.
15:06

Script Error

Musashi is happy that their luck has changed with Pikachu falling into their hole whereas Jessie in the English dub asks Pikachu to come sit on her head.

Jessie: Why don't you come for a ride on my head?
Musashi: So this is what they call luck born out of misfortune.
18:58

Script Error

A few more lines were removed from the English dub just after Ash throws Primeape into the hole with Team Rocket.

Musashi: Don't make it mad!
Kojiro: I'm not planning to.
19:20

Script Error

Ash in the English dub refers to Primeape by talking about its move Thrash. Satoshi in the Japanese original though references the fact that Okorizaru literally means "angry ape" and it wouldn't live up to its name if it wasn't angry.

Ash: Well, at least now Primeape's doing the thrashing on our side.
Satoshi: It wouldn't be called an Okorizaru if it wasn't angry.
19:33

Script Error

Misty continues to reference the postcards even though Kasumi had dropped the subject ages ago. Brock had just suggested to Ash that they get Primeape a hat.

Misty: Better start sending in postcards.
Kasumi: It really has taken a liking to you.
20:54

Script Error

We get another doughnut reference at the very end of the episode.

Team Rocket: I wish we had some doughnuts!
Rocket Gang: This feels bad!

Quite a few instances 4Kids skipped lines in the English dub. The donut edit was kinda funny especially when Kasumi says "A doughnut Pokémon?". That gave me a good chuckle.

Pretty average episode, but with some funny moments, like when Satoshi 'catches' a riceball with his Pokéball.
It had been a while since I had last seen this episode, and I didn't remember Satoshi got an Okorizaru in this episode. I vaguely remember the professor getting beaten up by it in a few episodes, but that's it.

And there really was some 'epic' edits in this episode... They actually called a riceball a doughnut? I didn't know they had this shape and were made of rice, but ok. A great example of some pretty stupid 'domestication' in the translation process.
