It's been about 12 years since Shigeru last appearance, so I was as excited as everyone else.
I was very nervous when I entered the studio to play Shigeru for the first time in a long time, but...
When I heard Satoshi's voice, which has always remained unchanged, I naturally came back to Shigeru.
He has always had a bit of a superiority complex as a character, but I think this time he will bring a different kind of charm that everyone will notice.
I'll be happy if you'll pay attention to his passionate attitude toward his goals. Yuko Kobayashi as Shigeru

We're almost time for Anipoke! It's the first time in about 12 years that Satoshi's rival, Shigeru, has made an appearance!

pic

The anime "Pocket Monsters" will start airing soon! It airs every Friday at 6:55 p.m. and it is very popular! In this article, we'll introduce you to the Pokémon and characters that will appear in today's episode, as well as comments from the voice actors and director, and other Anipoke information you won't find anywhere else! Today's episode is the one that Anipoke fans and Shigeru supporters all over Japan have been waiting for!

Satoshi and Go arrive at the Okido Laboratory in Masara Town for the first time in a while. They meet Professor Okido for the first time in quite a while, and Go is asked to see his Pokémon Zukan. Professor Okido is surprised to learn that Go has acquired the Legendary Pokémon Suicune, and tells Go about "Project Mew".

"Project Mew" is a team of elite people who are searching for Mew, and they are currently recruiting members. It sounds like a good deal for Go, who's dream is getting Mew...?

pic
It's been a while since we've seen the Okido Laboratory. He doesn't show up, but there's a glimpse of Kenji, much to the delight of the fans!

Satoshi, on the other hand, is reunited with the Pokémon he had left at the laboratory. However, Professor Okido says that Goukazaru hasn't been seen for a while. He says he was battling a Fire-type Pokémon before it disappeared... but where is it? So Satoshi and Go go to look for Goukazaru.

pic
The appearance of Satoshi's partner Pokémon from previous generations!

And on his way to find Goukazaru, he meets... that Shigeru! Satoshi's childhood friend, his rival, and his best friend, Shigeru! He used to be rude, sarcastic, proud, and snobby! He used to have girls who would cheer him on and say, "Do your best, do your best, Shigeru!" This is the first time in 12 years that Shigeru, who used to get cheers from the crowd, will appear in an anime!

pic
He's here with Kamex! Will we get to hear that "Satoshi-kun" we've all been waiting for?

pic
We haven't seen Shigeru in a while, but he's grown up even more, and he's kind of cool! (Wasn't he more of an egomaniac?)

pic
However, Shigeru is very blunt with Go, whom he has never met before. It's just like the way he used to talk to Satoshi.

Shigeru is currently traveling around the world to study Pokémon, and he says that he stopped by the Kanto region for "a purpose". And that purpose is to learn about the Legendary Pokémon Fire. In addition, Fire seems to have nothing to do with the disappearance of Satoshi's Goukazaru. What is its purpose? The situation takes a sudden and unexpected turn from here!

pic
The one who glares at Satoshi and his friends is...Fire! It looks like a hot fight is about to begin!

Interview with Yuko Kobayashi, who plays the role of Shigeru in the TV animated series Pocket Monsters (Part 2) "I was impressed by how refreshing he looked when he got Fire's feather."

In "Rivals for Go?! The Road to Mew!!", Shigeru is making his first appearance in 12 years, and investigates the mystery of Goukazaru with Satoshi and his friends, who disappeared from the Okido Laboratory. In the second part of our interview with Yuko Kobayashi, who plays the role of Shigeru, we asked her about the scenes that left a strong impression on her while playing the role, her thoughts on "Pocket Monsters," and other more in-depth topics.

After playing Shigeru for the first time in a while, where do you feel he has grown or changed?
Kobayashi: I thought the fact that he has a clear goal is a big change from the past. In order to become a member of Project Mew, Shigeru is now trying to complete the tasks given to him one by one. In a broader sense, compared to the way he used to study Pokémon, he's gone one step further and become a more passionate Shigeru.

I have the impression that his personality is also a little more aggressive.
Kobayashi: That's right. The sound director, Mr. Masafumi Mima, also instructed me to show more of a challenging spirit. In the past, he was a bit oblique and said, "Aren't you X?" Whereas in the past, he was a bit oblique and would say, "X, isn't it?" The current Shigeru has a clear idea that says, "I'm going to do this." For example, right after the B part, there is a scene where Shigeru and his friends go to a canyon, and there is a very long line.

It's the scene where Shigeru explains the background of this episode.
Kobayashi: That's right. It's an explanatory speech, but I was asked not to explain it in a simple way, but to speak in such a way that a person who has a proper goal would say it. I was instructed to say it like solving a riddle, like what happened and why it turned out this way. I really had to re-record that part many times. When you're my age, it's not often that you're asked to redo something wrong (laughs), but I was really happy to hear that everyone was recording with such care.

For long-time fans, it was nice to see Shigeru and Satoshi talking for the first time in a long time.
Kobayashi: That's right. There was a scene where Shigeru and Satoshi were walking shoulder to shoulder, and there was a good atmosphere because they were childhood friends rather than classmates. When you go to a reunion, you are instantly taken back to your school days, right? I think it was a bit like that. Moreover, at the end of that scene, I was instructed to "improvise". (laughs) I think the trust between Satoshi and Shigeru might have overlapped with the trust between Rica and me.

How was your interaction with the other character Go? I think from Go's point of view, he's in a position where an older peer is ahead of him.......
Kobayashi: Go seems to be a bit of an outcast this time (laughs), and it's interesting that he thinks "I can't join in"....... It's interesting that he thinks that he can't join in. I think he sees right through Go's talent and provokes him to do the same. That's exactly how he provoked Satoshi in the past. I thought he saw Satoshi in Go.

When you look back on this episode, what was your favorite or most memorable scene?
Kobayashi: I really liked the scene where the Fire appeared. The way it came out with its wings spread out was just breathtaking. Moreover, this time, the purpose of Shigeru's mission was to obtain a feather from Fire. When he gets the feather, Shigeru looks really refreshed. This time, I was asked to "create some dialogue for achieving this goal", so I took on the challenge of postrecording, and I think the sense of accomplishment of Shigeru overlapped with my own. I think I was able to connect with Shigeru and become one with him.

By the way, which is your favorite Pokémon?
Kobayashi: I like Blacky. It's one of Shigeru's Pokémon, and when he calls out, "Blacky!" I like the sound it makes when it responds with, "Blah!" (laughs). The role of Blacky was played by Satomi Kōrogi, who usually has a high-pitched and cute voice, but when she plays Blacky, her voice is very low (laughs). When I think of my favorite Pokémon, Blacky is the first one that comes to mind. Then there's Pikachu! Pikachu is so cute.

I see (laughs). Finally, can you tell us what kind of show Pocket Monsters is to you, Ms. Kobayashi?
Kobayashi: I think that the TV animated series Pocket Monsters is an amazing show with such a long history, and I'm very proud to have been able to play the role of Shigeru, Satoshi's rival, in the first series. It is one of the more major roles on my resume, so I'm thrilled to be a part of this precious show that I love.

Interview with Yuko Kobayashi, who plays the role of Shigeru in the TV animated series Pocket Monsters (Part 1) "Please continue to support Shigeru with a new sense of purpose to him."

Interviewer: Shotaro Miya (宮昌太朗)

Satoshi's friend and rival, Shigeru, is coming back to the TV anime Pocket Monsters! On May 28th, 2021, "Rivals for Go?! The Road to Mew!!" will broadcast. Satoshi and his friends visit the Okido Labratory and encounter Shigeru, and he decide to go with him to look for the Goukazaru who has disappeared from the labratory. What was it like to play Shigel for the first time in about 12 years? We spoke with Yuko Kobayashi, who plays Shigeru.

Shigeru hasn't appeared since the TV anime Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl, so it's been 12 years since his last appearance.
Kobayashi: It's been a full circle of the Chinese zodiac (laughs). I was told by someone who saw the opening video that Shigeru was in the intro, but at that time I hadn't been officially asked to appear in the show yet, so they'd say, "Congratulations!" (laughs). Of course, I was hoping that I would be able to appear in the show, so when I got the call from the office, I simply thought, "Yay!" I was so excited. I was really happy to be able to play Shigeru again.

In a way, Shigeru is like a rival boy for Satoshi, but what kind of character is he from your point of view?
Kobayashi: If Satoshi is a straightforward, honest, and pure boy, then Shigeru, who is in the same class as Satoshi, is a bit more mature, and looks down at him as a rival (laughs). He also has a bit of an innocent streak, and deliberately says provocative things to get others fired up. Contrary to Satoshi, he's not straightforward, but he has his own way of doing things. I think that's the charm of Shigeru.

Does the kind of personality that Shigeru's has also make an impact in his voice acting?
Kobayashi: Of course, it does. I think its the way he talks with a slight angle. When he calls out to Satoshi, Shigeru calls him "Satoshi-kun" in a slightly jeering manner. Actually, in the script for the TV animation Pocket Monsters that aired in 1997, "Satoshi-kun" was written in the usual way. But when I started calling him "Sa~toshi-kun," before I knew it, the script started printing "Sa~toshi-kun" as well (laughs).

Are there any episodes from the first TV series that were particularly memorable for you?
Kobayashi: Shigeru always looked down on Satoshi, but there was one time when he praised him. He said, "You've raised your Pokémon well". He had always thought that he was better than Satoshi, but for the first time, Shigeru recognized Satoshi's strength. I really liked that episode, and I remember it well.

I see. What was your impression when you read the script?
Kobayashi: First of all, there was a line where he called out, "Sa~toshi-kun," and I felt a little relieved when I saw that. (laughs) I thought that I should start from there and build up Shigeru for the first time in 12 years. However, it's definitely been a long time since I've done this, so I was still a bit anxious before I went to the studio.

Even a veteran like Ms. Kobayashi still get anxious.
Kobayashi: However, when the recording started and I got to hear Rica's voice (Matsumoto, who voices Satoshi), I felt like I was able to get back into the character of Shigeru. When I heard Rica's voice, I felt relieved, like, "Yes, yes, this is it! That's how it is."

So you did dubbing together, didn't you?
Kobayashi: That's right. Since it was recorded during the coronavirus, of course, the booths were separate, and it is over the intercom, but we were still able to hear each others dialog. It was a lot of fun to be able to act in real time. It's had also been a long time since we'd seen each other, so of course we wore a mask and had acrylic, but we were able to say, "Yuko-san!" and "Rica!".

It was a bit like a reunion (laughs).
Kobayashi: I was really grateful that we were able to do the postrecording with all the main characters together, including Daiki Yamashita as Go and Kenyu Horiuchi as Professor Okido. The anxiety I felt before going to the studio disappeared as soon as the recording started and I was interacting with everyone. That's how I felt.

Please leave a message for the viewers who are looking forward to the show.
Kobayashi: If you've never seen me before, you might be wondering who this guy is who's talking to Satoshi in such a friendly way. (laughs). I'm very happy to be able to play Shigeru, Satoshi's comrade in arms, best friend, and rival, for the first time in 12 years. It was hard to regain my instincts after a long time since recording, but I really enjoyed the scene. I hope that the audience can feel that fun, and that they will continue to support me as I add a new flavor to Shigeru.
