Script Error

Ash's line makes it seem like he and his friends knew where he was going and they had arrived at their destination but that wasn't the case. Satoshi in the Japanese original just comments on how open the fields are.

Ash: Hey! We're here!
Satoshi: Wow! It's so spacious!
(サトシ): 広~い!

01:22

Script Error

The English dub announcer states that the location that Ash and his friends had arrived at was the Safari Zone, not Safari Land. Safari Land is an anime-only area near the Safari Zone but it is not the same location. At the very end of the Japanese episode, Satoshi learns of the Safari Zone and heads there.

Narrator: Our friends arrive at the Safari Zone where they're sure to discover some new and unusual Pokémon.
Narrator Japanese: Now that he's arrived in the Safari Land, what kind of Pokémon might he come across?
(ナレーター): やってきましたサファリランド。どんなポケモンに出会える事やら?
01:26

Script Error

In the English dub, Misty specifically says that she thinks that they are feeling an earthquake but Kasumi isn't sure exactly what is happening.

Misty: Hey, it feels like an earthquake!
Kasumi: What, what? What's going on?
(カスミ): なになに?何なの?

03:10

Script Error

Lara Laramie says its against the law to capture Pokémon on the reserve in the English dub. Fuko though in the Japanese original states that it decided that people should not be allowed to capture Pokémon on the reserve. The Japanese version didn't specifically say it was a law but more of a rule or custom.

Lara Laramie: It's a place where it's against the law to capture Pokémon so they can grow up here naturally.
Fuko Laramie: In order to let the Pokémon grow freely, it was decided that people shouldn't capture them here.
(フウコ・ララミー): ポケモンがのびのび育つように 捕っちゃいけない決まりになってんのよ。

03:16

Script Error

According to Takeshi's statement in the Japanese original, Fuko is 13. 5 years later she would be 18 years old. Wikipedia states: "The national age of consent in Japan is 13 as specified by the Japanese Penal Code Articles 176 and 177. However, prefectures can have ordinances that prohibit sexual activities with any minor under 18."

The English dub removes the sexual reference and makes Brock talk in a hillbilly voice instead.

Brock: You grew up right pretty yourself, miss!
Takeshi: If you're being raised freely, I look forward to five years from now.
(タケシ): のびのび育てば5年後が楽しみだ。

03:20

Script Error

Lara in the English dub names the actual ranch while Fuko refers to her family as Pokémon ranchers because Brock asks for the name of the place while Takeshi asks for her name.

Lara Laramie: Have you ever heard of the Big P Pokémon Ranch that's owned by the Laramie family?
Fuko Laramie: Haven't you people heard of the Laramie clan, the Pokémon ranchers?
(フウコ・ララミー): 君たち ポケモン放牧民ララミー族って聞いたことない?

05:52

Paint Edit

The banner hanging up in the village states: "Laramie Village" (Raramii mura ララミー村) in the Japanese original but that gets painted out in the English dub and is replaced with nothing which makes it look a bit odd considering the amount of onscreen time the blank banner gets.
05:55

Paint Edit

All the stand signs are erased in the English dub in this scene. Wouldn't that make it hard for people to know what the vendors are selling?

In the Japanese original, the red sign says: Yakitori (やきとり) while only the first letter "ma" (ま) of the other sign can be seen but with the target shown it's most likely supposed to be "matoate" (まとあて) which means "target" or a variation of that word.
05:58

Paint Edit

The sign on the stand says "gatachiko" (がたちこ) but there are probably more characters being blocked by the kids to properly identify this sign.
06:29

Paint Edit

Three sign's in this scene get painted over in the English dub and replaced with nothing. The purple sign on the left says: 'tebou' (てぼう) which literally means a 'person missing at least one hand' and its a one-handed festival game. The blue sign on the right says: Yo-yo fishing (ヨーヨーすくい), a Japanese festival game of fishing balloons. The third white sign cannot be read in the Japanese original but was painted out in the English dub nonetheless.
06:43

Paint Edit

The red sign for the vending stand says okonomiyaki (お好み焼き).
06:55

Paint Edit

The red sign for the vending stand that says okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) gets painted out again despite only being in a few frames.
08:28

Script Error

Satoshi suggests to Lara that she could always race next year while Ash in the English dub thinks its a shame for the whole clan that she cannot compete.

Ash: Too bad for the Laramie clan.
Satoshi: There's always next year.
(サトシ): また来年を目指せば・・・

09:56

Paint Edit

The banner at the grand stands says: Pokémon Race START (ポケモンレースSTART) in the Japanese original. A couple of background banners are also painted out in the English dub that look like the letter "P".
10:44

Paint Edit

The blue banner says "Fight Fight" (ファイト ファイト). The none of the banners are painted out in this scene.
11:05

Paint Edit

Most of the banners are painted out in the English dub. The red banner beside "GoGo!" says: "Good Luck, Sihorn!" (がんばれサイホーン)
11:07

Paint Edit

Another view of the banner at the grand stands which says: Pokémon Race START (ポケモンレースSTART) in the Japanese original.
11:12

Paint Edit

Another banner that says "Good Luck, Sihorn!" (がんばれサイホーン) is painted out in the English dub.
13:54

Script Error

When Pikachu crosses the lake on Zenigame's back, the announcer calls it a "surfing Pikachu" (なみのりピカチュウ). The Surfing Pikachu, a Pikachu knowing the move Surf, was a special event Pokémon that was first distributed through a raffle contest in the October 1997 issue of Corocoro Comic and the November 1997 issue of Corocoro Comic Special, which was presumably still running as this episode first aired.
The equivalent line in the dub is a decent enough replacement, but ignores the direct reference.

Announcer English dub: And looks like surf's up for Pikachu!
Announcer Japanese: On the other side of the spectrum, here's a surfing Pikachu for you!
(アナウンサー): 一方、こっちらはなみのりピカチュウだ!

14:12

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the Dodrio heads are fighting over which type of food they want to eat, but in the English dub they fight over who will eat first. Given that the video clearly shows the two other heads trying to get to different ledges, the dub line doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Announcer English dub: Looks like each one of Dodrio's three heads wants to eat first and a fight's broken out!
Announcer Japanese: This is also unexpected! Dodrio's three heads have begun quarreling over which type of food to choose.
(アナウンサー): これまた意外! ドードリオ三つの首が別の餌を求めて喧嘩を始めたぞ!

14:59

Paint Edit

Part of the blue banner that says: "Fight Fight" (ファイト ファイト) is painted out this time in the English dub.
15:06

Culture Reference

Jessie thinks Misty is comparing the Team Rocket trio to The Three Stooges in the English dub.

Character English Translation Japanese
Misty We don't have time to play around with you 3 stooges! Now's not the time to play around with you guys! 今はあんたたちと遊んでる暇ないの!
Jessie How dare you compare us to-- Shut it, brat girl! お黙り、ジャリガール!

16:44

Script Error

Nyarth's coins before cats reference was replaced in the Enligsh dub with a generic blasting off statement.

Meowth: Now we're blastin' off agaaaain!
Nyarth: This was supposed to be coins before cats!
(ニャース): 猫に小判ニャのに~!

17:47

Paint Edit

The English dub painted out only parts of the letter 'Po' (ポ) from presumably a banner that says: Go Go Ponyta (GoGoポニータ).

The Ponyta (ポニータ) banner on the right is replaced with "GO! GO! GO!" in the English dub.

Once again the English dub paints out part of the Japanese letters on the top banner but not all of them leaving part of 'Ra' (ラ) intact.
17:50

Script Error

Satoshi is mad in the Japanese original because attacking another racer is against the rules. Ash just calls it a cheap shot but says nothing about it begin against the race rules.

Ash: That was a cheap shot, Dario!
Satoshi: No fair! That's against the rules!
(サトシ): ずるいぞ!そんなの反則だ!

18:26

Script Error

The Japanese original uses the metric system to state Gallop's top speed of 240 km/h while the English dub imperial system and states Rapidash's top speed is over 100 miles an hour. 100mph is approximately 160km/h.

Announcer English dub: Here comes Rapidash who has a top speed of over 100 miles an hour!
Announcer Japanese: Here we go! This is Gallop's top speed, 240 km/h!
(アナウンサー): 出た!ギャロップの最高時速240km!

18:47

Paint Edit

The banner at the grand stands that says: Pokémon Race START (ポケモンレースSTART) is painted out again.
19:04

Scene Cut

The English dub cut the stars that were in the Japanese original that lasted about a second on screen and replaced it with a quick hoof mark that was only a few frames in length.
20:09

Script Error

Completely conflicting with what the Narrator said at the beginning of the episode where he stated that Ash and his friends were already at the Safari Zone, the Narrator says at the end of the episode that Ash and his friends are heading to the Safari Zone now.

Narrator: As our heroes say good-bye to their new friend at the Laramie Pokémon ranch, they're headed for new adventures in the Safari Zone.
Narrator Japanese: Having made a new friend, Satoshi and the others head straight to the Safari Zone.
(ナレーター): 新たな友情をゲットして、サトシ達は一路サファリゾーンを目指す。

This has always been one of my most favorite episodes of the entire series and I'm glad to see that for the most part the English dub was fairly accurate with their dialog and didn't stray too far from what the Japanese original had.

Rapidash is just so slow compared to Gallop though and Takeshi can't wait for Fuko to get to a legal age!

This has always been one of my most favorite episodes of the entire series and I'm glad to see that for the most part the English dub was fairly accurate with their dialog and didn't stray too far from what the Japanese original had.

It's also worth pointing out that this episode holds the highest TV rating ever for a Pokémon episode, aka the most watched episode live in Japan. Interesting, isn't it :)

Takeshi can't wait for Fuko to get to a legal age!

Like how this series, in exchange for an awful plot, pacing and battles, offered great character interactions and quite funny dialogue! At the end of the 2nd Johto episode Takeshi also says a line with similar effect about a girl that they met in the episode, though he stated it only to Satoshi and Kasumi.

Rapidash is just so slow compared to Gallop though and Takeshi can't wait for Fuko to get to a legal age!

I like this episode too. But don't you think tha there would be some amumblance people around to help the trainers who got hurt? There wasn't anyone helping most of them (the boy with the Voltorb, the guy with the rock Pokemon who jumped on a rock and sunk). I still wonder why they didn't help them out and take them to the hospital.
Look at my YouTube account!

I can't say that I was surprised to see Ponyta evolve, or Satoshi winning the race. However, I wasn't expecting Takeshi, Kasumi and Pikachu to take part in the race... It was quite funny to see poor Zenigame struggling with Pikachu on its back.

Predictable episode, but a nice one nonetheless.

Note the reference to the "Surfing Pikachu" here. This episode aired not all that long after the first two Surfing Pikachu events had been held, and it's always been recognized as way more "special" than all the other "some Pokemon that knows a move it can't learn otherwise" events.
