Summary
Ash and friends have arrived in Terracotta Town, where they will be separating once more after a new set of adventures has come to its end. May and Max will be catching the boat back to the Hoenn Region, Brock will go back to Pewter City, and Ash will be returning home to Pallet Town. As they walk through Terracotta Town together, they notice that there is a Festival going on and May quickly spots a poster for a Pokémon Contest. She says she’s going to enter it and, to everyone’s surprise, Ash announces he will and that since it’s not an official Contest, he won’t need a Pass.

At the Contest Hall, the registration clerk tells Ash and May that they need only fill out the form of registration to enter the Contest. Ash says out loud as he writes that he’ll use Pikachu for the Appeal Round and Sceptile for the Battle Round, while May comments she’ll use Eevee and Combusken. Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth spy on Coordinators from the bushes and plot to steal all of their Pokémon.

The registration clerk moves to the stage as the Contest opening draws near. Nurse Joy, at one of two Judge podiums, says that the winner of the Contest will receive the Terracotta Town Medal as their prize. The emcee wastes no time in commencing the Contest with none other than May’s appeal. He announces that she was in the Top 4 at the Indigo Plateau Grand Festival as she runs out on stage and releases Eevee.

May tells Eevee to use Dig and it begins making tunnels all over the field. Nurse Joy comments that the holes are nice, but wonders what May will do with them. May commands a Shadow Ball and multiples of them begin coming out of the holes, forming a circle in the air. Eevee launches one last one and it hits the center of the circle, creating beautiful fireworks in the air. As the Appeal Rounds continue, the Judges aren’t very impressed by the displays and finally Ash’s turn comes up.

The emcee announces that Ash was in the Top 8 at the Hoenn League Tournament as he sends in Pikachu and orders it to use Quick Attack. As it zooms around the field, Ash tells it to add in a Thunderbolt and it creates spinning circles of electricity. Ash then tells Pikachu to use Iron Tail and the spinning circle begins flying around the field. Making two more, the three circles bounce off each other and create a beautiful display to make the crowd cheer.

All of the Coordinators stand out on the field as the emcee prepares to announce the results of the Appeal Round. He announces that May holds the lead and will be moving on, and that Ash, being in second, will be her opponent. Ash and May cheer and then face each other, determined not to lose.

Outside the Contest Hall during the break between rounds, Ash and May send out Sceptile and Combusken who immediately begin glaring at each other. Just then, a boat with a Magikarp on the deck begins driving around on the grass. Three people, obviously Jessie, James, and Meowth, begin throwing Pokémon food about, trying to attract the attention of them all. The Pokémon come running and quickly get caught in a net. Ash and friends run up and confront the trio, who pull off their disguises and reveal themselves as Team Rocket, saying their motto as usual.

James fires a net at Pikachu and manages to catch it, putting it underneath the hanging net of the other Pokémon. They begin to leave but May orders a Mega Kick from Combusken prompting a “Bigfoot!” comment from Team Rocket as Combusken kicks down the nets. Sceptile uses Pound to send the nets towards the congregation of Coordinators. Each Coordinator catches their own Pokémon and Pikachu is freed once more. Pikachu shocks Team Rocket and May tells Combusken to attack, but it doesn’t. It slowly falls to its knees, apparently in pain. May watches anxiously as Combusken starts to glow and grow in size. When the glow fades, a Blaziken stands in Combusken’s place. Blaziken uses a Blaze Kick attack to blow up Team Rocket’s boat and send them blasting off once again. Ash looks up at Blaziken and scans it with his Pokédex, commenting that he wants to fight it.

Back in the Contest Hall, Ash and May meet in the center of the field and shake hands, then dispersing to their respective sides of the field. Ash releases Sceptile as May sends out her Blaziken and they both run towards the center, springing up in the air. They bounce off the ceiling and land where they started, ready to go. They launch into the air once again and Sceptile uses Pound, but Blaziken dodges it. Sceptile next tries a Bullet Seed and again misses. Sceptile’s third attempt at an attack is Leaf Blade, but it too misses as Blaziken uses Matrix-style dodges. Up on the screen, Ash’s points slowly degrade and Nurse Joy comments that missed attacks count for negative points.

Ash tells Sceptile that it needs to be more accurate and has it back Blaziken into a wall, then using Pound to send Blaziken flying back to the other side of the field. Sceptile moves in for another attack, but Blaziken uses Fire Spin and smashes Sceptile away. Blaziken tries to use Sky Uppercut, but misses, giving Sceptile the opportunity to use Leaf Blade, depleting May’s points halfway. At 2 minutes and 50 seconds to go, the match is pretty even.

Sceptile uses Bullet Seed once more and slowly pushes the blocking Blaziken backwards. They meet in the center once more in a Leaf Blade and Sky Uppercut smash. Blaziken uses Blaze Kick as Sceptile uses Pound and neither side gains any ground. The clock passes one minute and both Pokémon are extremely tired out. As they fall to their knees on their respective sides of the field, both trainers encourage their Pokémon to get up. Sceptile suddenly starts to glow in its Overgrow ability, used only once before in the Petalburg Gym as a Grovyle. Sceptile stands up, recharged from Overgrow and ready to go once more.

On the other side of the field, Blaziken starts to glow red, using its Blaze Ability. It, too, stands up recharged and ready to go. And once again, the two fully evolved starter Pokémon meet in the middle in a Leaf Blade and Sky Uppercut frenzy. Both trainers’ points are nearing total depletion as they launch their ultimate attacks simultaneously: Overheat and Solarbeam. The attacks create a giant explosion and everybody watches tentatively as they wonder who will win the match. The smoke from the explosion continues to spew in the air and neither Pokémon appears. Who will emerge from the blast conscious and victorious? Stay tuned!

English Official Summary

The kids are at Terracotta Town, where May and Max will catch a boat back home to Hoenn. The town happens to be hosting a festival, complete with its very own Pokémon Contest. Ash figures it's unofficial, so he wants to compete. Both Ash and May sign up, with Ash using Pikachu and Sceptile, and May using her Eevee and Combusken. Nurse Joy is the MC, doing her best Lillian impersonation. May goes first, impressing the crowd by having Eevee use Dig and Shadow Ball to create a fireworks display. Ash is equally impressive when Pikachu uses Quick Attack, Thunderbolt, and Iron Tail to create electric rings that buzz around the arena. At the end of the first round, May is in first place with Ash a close second, both of them advancing to the finals against each other. Between rounds, Team Rocket shows up in a parade float, tossing Pokémon food out so they can lure the Trainers' Pokémon into a net. Sceptile frees the Pokémon from the net and Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but Combusken seems to be ill and can't attack. Just then, it evolves into Blaziken, and uses Blaze Kick to send Team Rocket packing. The contest resumes, and Ash and May shake hands and start the battle. When Blaziken dodges all of Sceptile's attacks, Ash starts to lose points. He finally connects with Pound, but Blaziken returns with Fire Spin. The two Pokémon begin to lose points at roughly the same rate. Eventually both Pokémon are weakened, and Sceptile's Ability Overgrow kicks in. Blaziken's Ability Blaze also appears, and the two commence their battle. Eventually Blaziken fires Overheat and Sceptile responds with SolarBeam, with the two attacks colliding. The results of this attack will determine the outcome of the match, but no one can see the scoreboard, now obscured by a thick cloud of smoke.

Haruka in the Japanese original says that they'll have to say goodbye to each other soon while May in the English dub states they'll be home soon. Haruka's line focuses more on the disappointment they'll face having to part more so than May's line in the English dub.

May: Which means we'll all soon be home.
Haruka: It's finally time to say goodbye.
(ハルカ): いよいよ これでお別れかも。

02:44

James in the English dub jokes around by saying that there is a lot of Pokémon to capture and compares that to the fact that many large wholesale businesses make their money by selling in quantity. Kojiro doesn't joke around and just says they should start getting them.

James: It wouldn't hurt to deal in bulk. There's much to be made in wholesale.
Kojiro: There'll be no tomorrow for us! In any case, let's round them all up!
(コジロウ): 俺たちに明日はない!とにかく、一網打尽と行こう!

Meowth calls their device the "Crowd Control Mark Two" while Nyarth in the Japanese original calls it "Round Them All Up" mecha. No 'mark two' was indicated in the Japanese original.

Nyarth also says they should use all their non-existent saving to finish their mecha while Meowth in the English dub says the money that the boss would get from the Pokémon could fund a second iteration of Team Rocket.

Meowth: Well, there sure is a big bunch of them. Enough for the boss to start another Team Rocket. This sounds like a job for our Crowd Control Mark Two.
Nyarth: Now that that's decided, let's get to work! Let's use up all our nonexistent savings and complete our "Round Them All Up" mecha!
(ニャース): そうと決まれば行動開始。無き無しの貯金を全部はたいて一網打尽メカを完成させるのニャ!

Max says Brock is disqualified from the contest but considering he didn't even enter, that's quite a difficult feat to do. Max then also insults Brock in front of Joy by calling him annoying. Masato on the other hand in the Japanese original tells Takeshi that he's not going to enter and to watch from the audience.

Max: I'm sorry, but you're disqualified. Being totally annoying in public.
Masato: Right, right. Takeshi, you're not entering. Be good and watch from the audience seats.
(マサト): はいはい。タケシはエントリーしてないでしょ?観客席で大人しく観戦しようね。

In the Japanese original while the firework Shadow Ball's are exploding, the insert song Watashi, Makenai! ~Haruka no Theme~ (私、負けない! 〜ハルカのテーマ〜) plays and almost completely drowns out the crowds comments unless the audio is turned up really high. The English dub did not have an insert song and just standard dub replacement music is used which is a lot quieter and makes it very easy to hear the crowds comments which are actually the Japanese ones that weren't edited out. Perhaps the dub just wanted to show the audience is multicultural!

Crowd: Amazing! Pretty! (すごい! きれい!)

05:03

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the crowd only cheers for Haruka but in the English dub the crowd cheers for May and Eevee as the leave.

Crowd English Dub: Eevee! May!
Crowd Japanese: Haruka! (ハルカ!)

In the original, Joy describes Satoshi's appeal as a "denki nezumi hanabi" (電気鼠花火), a pun on the Japanese word for pinwheel fireworks, 鼠花火 (nezumi hanabi, literally "mouse fireworks") and Pikachu's Pokémon classification "electric mouse" (電気鼠, denki nezumi), contrasting this to Haruka's shoot-up fireworks (打ち上げ花火 uchiage hanabi) appeal. Since there's no way to connect these two terms in English, the pun is written out in the dub.

Joy (dub): A definite response to May's exquisite fireworks, no doubt. We've got these beautiful fireworks, Electric type pokémon style.
Joy (original): In contrast to Haruka's beautiful uchiage hanabi, these are fun denki nezumi hanabi.
(ジョーイ): ハルカ選手は美しい打ち上げ花火なら、こちらは楽しい電気鼠花火ですね

Rocket Gang arrives in what looks to be a fishing boat which Masato thinks is a festival float. The English dub cut the "good haul" part ("enyaa totto") from their translation adaption. Apparently, the phrase comes from a Japanese folk tale and means "there are fish here". In Rocket Gang's case it would loosely mean "there are Pokémon here!"

Team Rocket: Heave-ho!
Rocket Gang: Good haul, heave-ho!
(ロケット団): エンヤートット ドッコイショ!

Jessie in the English dub thinks all the Pokémon are stupid but Musashi just said that they needed bait in order to attract the Pokémon to them. James bring up the bulk food reference again while Kojiro in the Japanese original notes the Pokémon are gathering in front of their float/boat.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Empty stomachs mean empty heads. Well, you need bait to fish, right? 釣りには撒き餌が必要でしょ。
James There's nothing like the fun of free food. Except for free Pokémon. Of course. Let them think that this is part of a festival and once they let their guard down and gather, お祭りの一環だと思わせて 油断して集まってきたところ
Jessie First we line them up, then, whammo! we'll get them! 一気にゲットするんだから!
James Dealing in bulk's a blast. Look, look! They're assembling! ほらほら!集まってきたぞ!
Jessie Quite a crowd to control. Let's go, Nyarth. 行くわよ、ニャース。

The English dub decides to use a rhyming joke with 'pooh' because rhyming pooh with things is always funny...

James: Oh, pooh, there's always room for you.
Kojiro: Target: The Pikachu ahead!

Meowth references Bigfoot in the English dub when he sees the Mega Kick approaching.

Masato doesn't wonder why Ash has lost points like Max does.

Eyecatch Pre-episode Message

In order to alert the viewers that the episode is about to start, a special eyecatch was used. The eyecatch is a countdown towards the beginning of the episode and contains scenes from previous AG openings, Advance Adventure and Pokémon Symphonic Medley. The split-screen scenes with Haruka and Takeshi were updated versions of the Advance Adventure ones that reflected the changes in the characters' Pokémon teams. More specifically, the scene that depicted Takeshi's Mizugorou and Takeshi's Hassboh was replaced with a scene from Takeshi's Numacraw's battle against Satoshi's Juptile that took place in AG149, while the scene that depicted Haruka's Achamo and Haruka's Agehunt was replaced with a scene from Haruka's Gonbe's battle against Shiromi's Rafflesia that took place in AG151. The countdown ends with Satoshi reciting his catchphrase, "Get Pokémon!" (ポケモンゲットだぜ!, Pokémon getto da ze! ).

Special First-Airing Segment Diamond and Pearl Full-Force Scoop

In this installment of the "Diamond & Pearl Full-Force Scoop", the (still) unofficial Diamond & Pearl Campaign Boys, Robert, show off some secret clips of the new Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl anime that's set to start September 28th.

Like the games, the anime is set in the "Sinnoh Region". And of course, starter Pokémon are given out by professor Nanakamado. The first of these Pokémon is the Grass type, the Tiny Leaf Pokémon, Naetle. Next is the Water type, the Penguin Pokémon Pochama, and finally the Fire type, the Chimp Pokémon Hikozaru!

Robert concludes the corner by saying the final episode will be airing next week, along with the final installment of the Diamond & Pearl Full-Force Scoop segment. In that installment, they'll be providing exclusive news on the new Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl anime series.

Akiyama mentions that he'd choose the Burly Pokémon, Nanakamado, as his starter, and Yamamoto agrees that it is a pretty cool one, before catching himself and saying how that's the professor.

The second last episode of AG! After going back and watching this episode after a few years, I really miss AG! I especially liked the whole Battle Frontier arc. I really think the music is what made AG and it was showcased heavily in this episode in particular. The English dub cut all three of the insert songs and its amazing just how big of an impact the music makes on the 'feel' of an episode. It just didn't seem as energetic without the great music.

Added details about an untranslatable pun the dub had to write around to the edits page.

To be honest, I think the farewell scene with Haruka was rather weak, despite her appearing again 1.5 years after this episode. I confess that I only watched the dub version, which replaced most of the awesome musics, but I don't think that when I finally see it in japanese and with the powerful music that I'll change much my view. She wasn't shown to be even slightly sad by the fact that she was departing with Satoshi and Takeshi! She was more concerned about the rivals that she would have in Jouto. Masato appeared to be more sad at the event!

However, Shigeru appearing was nice foreshadowing, even though he would only appear in 4 episodes in Shinou. The rest of the episode was pretty nice too. Definitely a much better finale than at the end of the original series, which had a mostly filler feeling to it.

Ah, the end of AG... the whole contest felt really forced (just like Wakashamo evolving at the end), but it was still a nice episode. Not quite original, and a tad predictable, but I did enjoy the battle between Haruka and Satoshi... but didn't he already take part in a contest before? Or did he only do that in DP?

But that cliffhanger.... definitely one of the worst I have ever seen!

The episode made me realise how unique AG was compared to the other series... then again, I could say the same about the game it's based on. You can really feel in that episode the very special feeling of the entire AG series...
Personally, I was never too fond of the whole contest thing, but I have to admit it's part of what gave AG this peculiar feeling. They did get much better in DP in my opinion.
