Summary

English Official Summary

Ash and his friends board a fancy cruise ship called the St. Anne, thanks to tickets provided by two friendly but familiar-looking people. We soon learn that they're actually Jessie and James in disguise, and their latest plan is to lure Pokémon Trainers onto the ship and steal their Pokémon! While onboard, Ash observes a Raticate defeating a Starmie. Ash challenges the Raticate with his Butterfree. Though the Raticate's owner removes his Pokémon before the battle ends, he's impressed with Ash's Butterfree and offers a trade. Ash trades his Butterfree for the Raticate, but soon regrets his decision. Meanwhile, James is tricked into buying a Magikarp. While all the Trainers are gathered in a room, the ship's employees reveal themselves to be members of Team Rocket! As they suck up Poké Balls with vacuum-like devices, the Trainers fight back; their Pokémon team up to multiply their attacks and drive back the bad guys. During all the commotion, a tumultuous storm brews outside. Eventually, the ship rocks violently, and the consensus is to abandon ship. Only Jessie, James, Meowth, and Ash and his friends are unable to flee, as they are knocked unconscious by the jerking movements of the ship—then the ship flips over and sinks! What will become of our heroes? Will they have to join forces with Team Rocket to escape? And how successful could such a partnership be?

Note

A preview version of this episode originally aired as a "sneak peek" on September 7, 1998 prior to the series' official debut. In this sneak peek, the narrator's line is changed.

Preview: "Welcome to this special exclusive preview of Pokémon! For this sneak peek, let's pick up the adventure as our heroes are departing Vermilion City. As always, Brock, Misty and Pikachu join Ash on his quest to become a Pokémon Master."

Final: "As his Pokémon journey continues, Ash is one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master. Last time, Ash defeated the Vermilion City Gym Leader, and earned a Thunder Badge."

03:35

Script Error

When Team Rocket gives the tickets to Ash and his friends, Brock says that they'de like the tickets but don't have any money to pay for them. In the Japanese version, Musashi says they are presents to them but in the English version Jessie says they are totally free.

English Dub
Jessie: They're totally free!
Jessie: Totally free!
Jessie: To-ta-lly free!

Japanese
Musashi: It's a present.
Musashi: P-re-se-n-t.
04:23

Culture Reference

Musashi and Kojiro are both wearing kogal (コギャル) outfits which are a fashion trend that are based off Japanese school uniforms. They also have makeup on that resembles the Ganguro (顔黒) style which generally combines blonde or orange hair with a dark tanned face and skin. Kojiro makes a reference to the kogal outfit he was wearing in the Japanese version which was removed in the English dub.

English Dub
James: Like wow! Don't I make like the coolest girl!

Japanese
Kojiro: I think this kogal outfit looks super nice on me!
06:16

Paint Edit

A sign in Japanese on the deck of the ship states Pokemon Trainer Parlor Assembly Hall (ポケモントレーナーパーラー会場) and was kept in the English dub as well.
06:31

Paint Edit

The merchants sign originally said "Big Sale" (大売) and was translated to "Sale" in the English dub.
07:31

Paint Edit

The sign above the battle area originally had the kanji for shouri (勝利) which was literally translated exactly to 'Win' in the English dub.
07:45

Paint Edit

The same sign above the battle area is shown again moments later.
20:13

After Story

A preview version of this episode originally aired as a "sneak peek" on September 7, 1998 prior to the series' official debut. In this sneak peek, the narrator's line is changed.

Preview: "Not everyone, captain. And as the St. Anne heads to the bottom of the sea, our heroes are trapped unconscious inside, and so is Team Rocket. Could this be the end? How will they escape their watery fate? Those answers will be coming soon enough, but tomorrow we'll take you back to the beginning, to find out how everybody met, and to discover how this incredible Pokémon adventure all began."

Final: "Not everyone, captain. And as the St. Anne heads to the bottom of the sea, our heroes are trapped unconscious inside, and so is Team Rocket. Could this be the end? How will they escape their watery fate? I don't know, but I have a terrible sinking feeling!"

Added the episode comparison for this episode. It's interesting to note that the kogal and Ganguro fashion that Musashi and Kojiro are dressed up in is still seen in Japan.

I really like this episode. I especially like how it shows off almost every aspect of Pokemon (at the time) in it, from battling, to Team Rocket, to trading.

One of my personal favorites.
