Summary
Several months have passed since Ash left his hometown of Pallet on his Pokémon journey. After lots of adventures and discoveries, Ash and his friends find themselves somewhere in the mountains en route to Fuchsia City where Ash will challenge the Fuchsia City Gym leader. Ash is confident that when he gets there, he will get his next badge.

Brock tells his friends that the map says the Fuchsia Gym's on the other side of the mountains right in front of them. He then refers to the map and shows them that they are surrounded on all sides by mountains so they will have to traverse through them to get to Fuchsia City.

Team Rocket has stopped for lunch as Meowth decides to work out instead of eating his lunch. Just as they start to eat, a large explosion is heard in the distance which also shakes the ground. Team Rocket find that instead of eating their lunch, it is covered all over their body. Jessie and James are extremely mad that their lunch was spoiled and take off to find who was responsible.

Ash and his friends also hear the explosion and run down the path to see what was causing it. They soon come upon a convoy of trucks heading up a road towards a building that is under construction. Jessie and James also discover the construction site and they see that there is rock blasting. Moments later the road gives way and a bunch of trucks get into an accident.

Pikachu can hear something under the ground and a Diglett appears in front of Pikachu. Meowth sees the Diglett and Pikachu on the road. Ash, Misty and Brock run up to a construction worker that got out of his truck that was in the accident to see if he is alright. He exclaims that the Diglett are destroying everything. He points to the Diglett group that has appeared down the road. Misty calls them cute but the construction worker is quick to tell her that thanks to them, they can't finish building the dam.

Ash gets out his Pokedex to look up Diglett. The dex explains that the movement of the ground Pokémon Diglett can be easily detected by their tracks of upturned earth. Ash looks at the road and doesn't see any upturned dirt so he is a bit confused. The construction worker explains that they can't get supplies through because of Diglett wrecking the road and that they have created a special division for developing strategies to fight off the Diglett but has proved unsuccessful.

The construction worker then tells Ash and his friends that they are calling for any able Pokémon trainer who is traveling through the area that is willing to help them get rid of the Diglett will receive a reward of a 6-night, 7-day stay at the famous Giva Hot Springs Resort. Just as he finishes explaining that, Gary appears in his car with fanclub of girls.

Gary insults Ash for a bit before the construction worker had enough of their fooling around and tells them to get back to the business at hand of getting rid of the Diglett's. Gary is quick to tell him that he's on the job now and he won't have to worry about them for much longer. Jessie and James overhear the Construction Worker's rant that there would be a reward for those that got rid of the Diglett and they decide that they could use a little relaxation at the hot spring resort.

The Construction Worker holds a group meeting at the construction site stating that he greatly appreciate all the talented Pokémon trainers that have shown up to help them get rid of the Diglett. Team Rocket realize that there is a lot of trainers there and they have a lot of Pokémon. James gets out a calculator to figure out just how many Pokémon they would have but stops when he realizes they couldn't possibly defeat all those Pokémon with just Ekans and Koffing. Team Rocket realizes they need an alternate plan instead.

The Construction Worker continues his meeting telling the Pokémon trainers that greatest parasitic bug Pokémon of the century is Diglett. Gary quickly corrects him by saying that the term mole Pokémon would be more appropriate. Ash gets a bit mad at Gary for showing off. Suddenly the Diglett appear and wreck a parked bus.

Gary tries to send out his Pokémon but just as its about to appear, the Pokéball closes and it doesn't come out. A Diglett appears and brings the Pokéball back to Gary. Gary tries throwing another Pokéball to release his Pokémon but like the first time, it doesn't come out. All the Pokémon trainers throw their Pokéball's trying to see if their Pokémon would come out but none do. A pile of Pokéball's is now in front of all the trainers and the Diglett's reappear and return all the Pokéball's to their trainers.

Ash tries to send out his Squirtle but Pikachu quickly tries to stop him from doing so but it still gets thrown but Squirtle doesn't come out. Gary realizes that the Pokémon don't want to battle the Diglett for some reason which Pikachu confirms. The Construction worker is then seen playing 'Wack-a-Diglett' with a hammer with little success. Gary then comments to Ash that wacking them with a hammer won't work because Diglett can pull their heads in at 186,000,282 miles per second, the speed of light. Gary then decides that it was best for him to just continue his journey to become a Pokémon Master and drives off.

Night arrives and Ash, Misty and Brock rest in a hot spring nearby as they discuss why the Pokémon wouldn't come out of their Pokéballs. The Diglett appear at the hot spring and Ash and his friends chase after them. Jessie and James meanwhile are spending their time figuring out that they need to get a certain degree of experience points before they can successfully evolve their Ekans and Koffing. They begin to cry and their Pokémon begin to evolve.

Ash and his friends find out why the Diglett were attacking the contruction site. The area is the Diglett and Dugtrio's home and they work and live in the mountain range. They realize that if the dam is completed, the whole forest would be completely covered with water and nothing could live there. The construction worker cancels the dam building project just as Team Rocket appears. They reveal that Jessie's Ekans evolved into an Arbok and that James's Koffing evolved into a Weezing. They attack but are quickly stopped by Ash and friends. Now that the Diglett and Dugtrio situation is resolved, Ash and his friends continue their journey to Fuchsia City.

Misty comments they have traveled a long way while Kasumi in the Japanese original infers that she glad to get out of Gringy City (グンジョシティ) as it was heavily polluted but doesn't specifically name it in this episode.

Brock in the English dub has a funny way of admitting they are lost by not directly saying they are lost. Takeshi in the Japanese original on the other hand is a bit reluctant to admit that they are lost.

Script Error

The food that Team Rocket is eating is changed in the English dub. In the Japanese original, Musashi was eating curry which the English dub changed to Chinese food and Kojiro's ochazuke (rice and tea) became tea and crumpets which he was eating with chopstick in a bowl. Generally don't see people eating tea and crumpets during Afternoon tea with chopstick and a bowl. Musushi's line also had a small rhyming pun "karei ni karee" (華麗にカレー).

Script Error

Team Rocket's dialog was changed right after the blast as well. Musashi comments that her curry is sweet and Kojiro says he's covered in tea after the bowl filled with ochazuke spilled over him.

Kojiro's line: "You got that tea served right" is a pun in the Japanese original. Kojiro says: "Kotchi mo cha-mamire" and Nyarth replies: "Chamamiro" (チャマミロ). "Chamamiro" is a pun on "zamamiro" (様見ろ) which essentially means "serves you right".

Script Error

The next Team Rocket scene was pretty much rewritten from scratch compared to the Japanese original. First, Kojiro's line is a pun based on the fact that most of the words in his sentence have 'cha' (チャ) in it, in which he also references ochazuke (茶漬け) (rice and tea) again. In the English dub, James is still holding the bowl with chopsticks in it and then says he's not going to have his tea party?! That would be a strange tea party with chopsticks and bowls.

Next, some of the Rocket Gang's dialog was removed in the English dub. In the Japanaese original, Rocket Gang initially say "harisen" (ハリセン) which is a paper fan used as a slapstick but quickly correct themselves and say "yurusen" (許せん) which means "We won't forgive this!" as they are mad at whoever wrecked their lunch.

Finally, Kojiro thinks they are filming a documentary on buried treasure and then decides its Ultra Sentai (ウルトラ戦隊) instead. "Ultra sentai" is probably a combination of the "Super Sentai" and "Ultraman" which are very popular television shows in Japan. James things they are being attacked by aliens from another planet in the English dub.

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the "different world" line is a running gag repeating many times throughout the episode which started off with Musashi telling Kojiro he was in a 'different world'. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to this line in the Japanese original other than "repetition = humor".

Script Error

The name of the dam in the Japanese original was the "Oats Go Dam" (オーツゴーダム). The English dub changed that to the "Great Giva Dam". "Giva Dam" also sounds like "Give a Damn", a common saying in English when people "don't care' about something.

Foreman: And it looks like we'll never be able to accomplish our dream of building the Great Giva Dam here in these mountains.
Foreman Translation: At this rate, we'll never have a cracker of a chance at completing our dream project; the Oats Go Dam, the finest dam of the mountain range!

Script Error

The name of the resort spring was changed in the English dub as was the rewards duration there. In the Japanese original, the resort spring is called the "Oats Go Hot Spring" (オーツゴー温泉) while its called the famous "Giva Hot Springs Resort" in the English dub. In the Japanese original, the duration for the reward at the resort was 4 days and 3 nights but the English dub changed that to 7 days and 6 nights.

Foreman: The reward is a 6-night, 7-day stay at the famous Giva Hot Springs Resort.
Foreman Translation: We offer a complimentary stay at the Oats Go Hot Spring for 4 days and 3 nights as a reward.

The English dub painted out "Oats!! Go!" (オーツ!! ゴー!) that was on the paper in the Japanese original. It's odd the English dub didn't add something on the paper as the Construction foreman shows Ash a blank piece of paper.

Script Error

Shigeru asks Satoshi a question in the Japanese original about who was the fourth to leave Masara Town the first day of their journey and Satoshi responds that it was him. The English dub changes it so that Gary doesn't ask a question and adds the point about being dead last instead. Ash's response was also cut from the English dub.

Continuing the 'fourth' dialog, Shigeru says being fourth is cool but Satoshi isn't cool because they're in the world of Pokémon and they aren't playing basebase. The English dub removed the fourth reference here and Gary just says he's going to hit a grand slam. The fourth person in the batting order is generally the most important as it 'is known as the cleanup hitter, and is almost always one of the best hitters on the team, often the one with the most power.'

Kasumi then agrees with Shigeru's assessment of Satoshi. Takeshi then comments on Shigeru's earlier comments by saying the Pokémon world and the baseball world are 'different worlds' bring up that running gag again. Brock and Misty both agree that Gary is detestable.

Script Error

Takeshi asks the girls if they could meet up in eight years and the girls all turn him down because they think he is too old. In the English dub, Brock also asks the girls to meet up but instead they agree to his proposition but call him 'sir'. That is completely opposite to the Japanese original. Kasumi realizes Takeshi is getting old but he's not as old as Shigeru's girls imply. Once again, this is a sexual reference as 8 years later the girls would be 18 years old. Wikipedia states: "The national age of consent in Japan is 13 as specified by the Japanese Penal Code Articles 176 and 177. However, prefectures can have ordinances that prohibit sexual activities with any minor under 18." That is the only reason Takeshi would reference "8 years" as there was no reason he couldn't just ask them out on a date.

Script Error

The entire Team Rocket scene was rewritten in the English dub to no longer reference their 'numbers' or the continuing gag on a 'different world'.

The Rocket Gang scene in the Japanese original is based off the phrase "keta ga chigau" (桁が違う) which is an idiom that literally means "different/wrong number" but generally speaking means "on a different level" and is the essence of the joke. The first two lines in the scene overly literal are: Musashi: "What's our number?" and Kojiro: "We're on a different level!". Musashi and Kojiro go on a bit about how they're on such a different "number" that their registration numbers have far more digits than the norm.

Nyarth then does a public service announcement using the literal meaning of the phrase by telling people to make sure not to dial the "different/wrong number". The line is also a parody based of on the cell phone company KDDI which was called Kokusai Denshin Denwa (KDD) when this episode originally aired in Japan. KDD's slogan for their ads was "Zero Zero One-derful". 001 is Japan's international calling prefix and 'one' replaces 'won' in 'wonderful. Nyarth's line uses that slogan as a part of his line and instead of replacing 'one' with 'won' he replaces 'won' with 'nya' to get 'nyaderful (ニャンダフル).

At the end of the scene, the continuing gag on a 'different world' is discussed by Musashi and Kojiro in the Japanese original while the English dub adds in the aliens.

This brings up the reoccuring 'fourth' gag/pun when Satoshi, Takeshi, and Musashi all respond to Satoshi's annoyance when he realizes part of his name actually has 'shi' (シ) in it and it is a reminder to him that Shigeru called him 'fourth'. Takeshi tries to cheer up Satoshi by telling him that his name has 'shi' in it as well and Musashi in the distance also brings up the point that her name has 'shi' in it as well. The English dub brings up the loser insult instead and Jessie's line seems out of place when she states her name because it doesn't really link well with the previous lines.

The edit page for this episode took a lot of time a lot of different people helping, so I'd first like to thank them for all their assistance.

The English dub had so many complete rewrites in this episode that only a fragment of the original concept of this episode was left in the end. There was at least two running gags in this episode, one about Satoshi being 'fourth' and the other was the 'number' one. Kojiro's ochazuke (茶漬け) (rice and tea) was also referenced numerous times and that was cut out as well.

A lot of funny puns in the Japanese original, and with a bit of creative thinking, they were able to be translated while keeping the original spirit of the line intact. I like the translation we were able to get for Kojiro's line (http://www.pocketmonsters.net/episodes/31#Edits-edit1285): My advice is to not dice my rice; it is absolutely not nice! which keeps an almost literal translation intact while keeping the 'cha' (チャ) repetition and replacing it with 'ice'.

There has also been quite a discussion on the moral of this episode being the destruction of a dam for 'environmental' reasons. Hydroelectric power is a renewable energy source and has little pollution compared to other electrical generating methods. Most modern dams take into consideration the large reservoirs required and their impact on animal life and try to mitigate the impact.

A lot of lines were also cut from the English dub and no dialog replaced them. Either they couldn't think of anything to replace it or it was just easier to not even bother.

What a poor episode, which, as many of the episodes of very first season, didn't make much sense.
Digda, reaching the speed of light? For real?! Digda, planting entire forests? For real?!
As for the plot... well, no comment.

What a poor and mediocre episode, with a really poor and mediocre 'plot'...

Summary:
Satoshi, Takeshi, Kasumi and Pikachu get lost as they try taking a road deep into the mountains. As they follow an animal trail not listed on the map, the silence is suddenly broken by the sound of a huge explosion. The startled group hurry towards where the sound came from, and discover a construction site for a huge dam that's bustling with tractors.

The construction foreman tells Satoshi and friends that a group of the underground Pokémon Digda have been hindering their work recently, preventing the construction of the dam from proceeding, and that he has made a call for talented Pokémon Trainers to get rid of these Digda for them.

Since the Trainers who successfully manage to get rid of the Digda will be given a complimentary stay at a luxurious hot spring resort, lots of Trainers have answered his call... and Satoshi spots his rival Shigeru among them......
