Summary
While traveling to their next destination, a bright and sunny day quickly turns to a storm and our heroes Ash, Brock, Misty and Pikachu run to find some shelter. Misty exclaims they are in the middle of no where but they come to a mansion and they quickly run inside.

To their surprise, the mansion is dark and empty and Brock looks around and believes it looks like a theater. Ash's attention quickly turns to a 'Pikachu' noise behind him and he is surprised to see another Pikachu beside his own Pikachu. Misty thinks its cute and picks up the Pikachu only to be surprised by its odd looking face. She quickly drops it as she doesn't know what's wrong with the Pikachu. Brock thinks it could be a new kind of Pikachu after he examines it and Ash wants to capture it.

Ash's Pikachu Thundershocks the other Pikachu and just as Ash throws his Poke ball towards it to capture it, another Poke ball knocks it out of the air. Ash, Brock and Misty turn their attention to the side of the room where the Poke ball was thrown and they notice a guy that is dressed just like Ash standing by himself. Brock is quick to realize that it isn't a guy though and Misty wonder's how Brock could tell. Brock tells her that it men's intuition.

Ash introduces himself to the stranger who then states her name is Duplica from the House of Imitay. Duplica's Ditto then transforms back to its normal state. Ash gets his dex out and it states that Ditto is the transform Pokémon and that it is able to rearrange the cells of its body and assume any form. Brock then asks Duplica why Ditto wasn't able to transform completely as its face wasn't very good. Ash really isn't impressed with Ditto because it only knows one attack, so Duplica challenges Ash to a battle to show him its true power.

Ash and Duplica go up on stage for the battle as Brock and Misty, who is eating popcorn, watch the battle. Ash sends out his Bulbasaur to battle. Duplica already had her Ditto out and told it to transform. Ash's Bulbasaur attacks with Razor Leaf by Duplica's Ditto quickly counters by using Vine Whip to knock all the leaves away. Everyone is surprised by the fact that Ditto could emulate attacks as well. Ash quickly gives up after Ditto managed to use Vine Whip to tie Bulbasaur up so it couldn't move.

Duplica then takes Ash and friends into her wardrobe room where she changes into Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, and then Misty. Ash isn't impressed though and is looking out the window pondering his defeat. Brock and Misty come over to cheer him up and then told him that Duplica is a tough trainer as she must have studied all the Pokemon and all their possible moves to know which moves Bulbasaur could use. Duplica then tells everyone that she wants to become the greatest Ditto Master and a big star, not a Pokemon Master like Ash.

Duplica explained the reason that no one was visiting her theater anymore to watch her and Ditto because people didn't like the fact that Ditto couldn't transform properly. She hoped that peole would stop by and watch as they traveled by. Suddenly the lights go out and Team Rocket appears on the stage and do their motto.

Team Rocket tells Ash that they aren't interested in Pikachu this time and Meowth quickly jumps off the stage and captures Ditto. James Weezing is sent out and uses Smokescreen to allow Team Rocket to make a getaway. They escape to a nearby house where Jessie and James ask Ditto to transform into a Dratini. They then pretend to be the boss and explain to Ditto why it needs to transform. Jessie then tells James that before they give Ditto to the boss they should have some fun.

Jessie gets out a picture of her first boyfriend and then asks Ditto to transform into what he would look like now. James quickly is fascinated by Jessie's story and watches as Ditto performs the transformation. Meowth and James fall on the floor laughing as it transformed into the picture with the frame and it still had the funny face as it couldn't transform perfectly. Angry, Jessie tells Ditto to transform into Dratini while holding up a book with a picture of a Ditto. Instead of transforming into the Dratini, Ditto transformed into a book.

Misty tells Duplica that they will find her Ditto and Brock explains that they have already sent out Pidgeotto and Zubat out on surveillance. Pidgeotto and Zubat return and tell Pikachu that they've located Ditto and Team Rocket. Before leaving, Duplica says she has a plan.

Back at the house, Ditto was forced to turn into Meowth but it once again wasn't able to master the face. Meowth was mad and threatened to use its claws if it didn't get it right. Ditto tries again and this time it was able to get the face perfect. Meowth then asks it to transform into Dratini but before it could Ash interrupts. Ash, Brock, Misty and Duplica imitate the Team Rocket Motto while dressed in Team Rocket uniforms. This quickly insults James and Jessie and gets them mad.

Duplica then states she will be taking back her Ditto but she discovers that its hard to tell the difference between Meowth and the transformed Ditto. Jessie and James explain they were able to perfect its transformation and Duplica quickly thanks Team Rocket for their work which catches them by surprise. Jessie and James are touched and begin to cry. Ash suggests that since they seemed touched that they should just hand over Ditto and forgo the battle. Jessie and James agree and hand over Meowth to Duplica.

Jessie and James then take off in the balloon but Duplica realizes that Meowth isn't her Ditto and throws Meowth into the balloon. Ditto then bites Jessie's hand and jumps out of the ballon into Duplica's arms. Jessie then opens the bottom of the balloon to reveal a canon. Duplica then tells Ditto to transform and it turns into a canon as well. Pikachu jumps into the Ditto canon and Pikachu flys into the air. Jessie shoots out a net from the canon but Pikachu uses its electric attack to shock everyone in the balloon and Meowth's claws end up popping the balloon. Team Rocket goes blasting off again.

Duplica then asks her Ditto to turn into a Pikachu but then Ash couldn't tell the two appart anymore. Duplica picks up her Ditto and it transforms back. Duplica reopens the Imitehouse and Ash and friends continue on their journey. In a forest, Jessie and James try to make up for loosing Ditto by getting Meowth into a Dratini costume.

Script Error

The Japanese narrator specifically references Satoshi while the English dub narrator talks about the "hero" group in general.

English Dub Narrator: As our heroes continue their journey, The future looks sunny and bright.
(ナレーター): 旅は続くよ サトシ君。 いつもいつでも絶好調
Japanese Narrator Translation: Your journey continues, Satoshi-kun. As always, everything is going perfectly.
01:58

Paint Edit

The English dub did not paint over "IMITEHOUSE" in the English dub. Imite (イミテ) is the Japanese romanization of the character the English dub named Duplica.
02:00

Script Error

The character Imite is taken from the video games. In the games, she's only referred to by her nickname Copycat Girl (モノマネむすめ), changed to simply "Copycat" in the English translation. This nickname is never used in the English dub episode itself, though it's part of the Japanese title and Imite calls her theater the "Copycat House" (モノマネハウス). The dub completely ignores the connection to the game character, and never uses the word "Copycat" at all.

Oddly enough, the character's purpose in the game is to give the player the TM for the move Monomane (モノマネ), though the name of this move is translated "Mimic" in the English games, removing the connection between character and move present in the original naming scheme.

Further complicating things, the 4th Generation attack Manekko (まねっこ) is translated by the English games as Copycat.
02:23

Script Error

Kasumi in the Japanese original states that she wants to get the other Pikachu after she realized there was another one other than Satoshi's Pikachu. Misty in just greats the other Pikachu.

Misty: Hi there!
Kasumi: I'm going to get this little one.
(カスミ): この子 私がゲットしちゃおうっと。

03:15

Script Error

As the English dub didn't paint out the IMITEHOUSE banner on the wall, they used it as a family house name. The closed captions spell it "Imitay" though. Duplica's name comes from the word duplication while Imite's name comes from the word Imitate.

Duplica: Duplica, from the house of Imitay.
Imite: I am Imite of the Copycat House.
(イミテ): 私は モノマネハウスのイミテ。

03:26

Script Error

Takeshi says Imite is 7 years too young for him as 18 years old would be the consent age in Japan. This would make Imite about 11 years old according to Takeshi's assumption. Wikipedia states: "The national age of consent in Japan is 13 as specified by the Japanese Penal Code Articles 176 and 177. However, prefectures can have ordinances that prohibit sexual activities with any minor under 18."

Brock: Hmm. But she may be a little young for me.
Takeshi: Hm... I'll have to wait seven years, though.
(タケシ): ううむ でも あと7年は待たないと。

04:19

Script Error

Takeshi is a lot more harsh in his opinion of Metamon than Brock is of Ditto. Takeshi just calls the Transformation a fake and that raising that actual Pokémon that is copied is a lot harder. Brock doesn't say anything about raising a Pokémon.

Brock: A transforming Pokémon. It's only attack is to copy other Pokémon. That's all it does.
Takeshi: But copying is just copying. Raising it is another story. It's just a fake, after all.
(タケシ): しかし 真似は真似。 育てるとなると話は別だな。 所詮はニセモノ。

06:10

Script Error

Imite while dressed as Junsa states she is going to arrest them for traffic law violations. Duplica dressed as Officer Jenny states she is going to arrest them for Pokémon poaching.

Duplica: You're under arrest for Pokémon poaching.
(Imite): I'm having all of you arrested under violation of traffic laws!
(イミテ): 道路交通法違反で あなたたち全員を逮捕します!

06:51

Script Error

In a bizarre twist, the English dub begins to acknowledge the difference between imitating/copying (真似) and fake (ニセモノ) that Takeshi specifically made point of earlier in the episode. Takeshi in the Japanese version brought up the idea of Metamon forgery at that time but suddenly Ash at this point in the English dub episode decides to call it a fake only after the real Bulbasaur lost. Satoshi stays consistent with his opinion though and continues to call it a copy (真似) in the Japanese version.

Ash: I just can't believe I lost the match to a great big fake.
Satoshi: That's why it shocked me so much. Even though it was a copy...
(サトシ): だから余計にショックなんじゃないか。 真似なのに…。

07:53

Script Error

Duplica says she wants to be a big star while Imite says she wants to be "the ultimate impersonation performer".

Duplica: And I want to be a big star!
Imite: Long story short, the ultimate impersonation performer!
(イミテ): 早い話が 究極のモノマネ芸人!

09:25

Script Error

In the Japanese version, Metamon is supposed to transform into a Biriridama like the one that was called up on stage but instead it ends up looking like a Marumine because it couldn't transform its face properly. An audience member who has a Marumine call Imite out on it. The English dub doesn't translate this segment of the show the same despite there being no real translation reason why they couldn't keep it intact with the English names of the Pokémon to get the same joke across.

Character English Translation Japanese
Audience Member It's still got that dumb face. Hey, isn't that a Marumine? おい それじゃマルマインだろ!
Imite That's so... You can tell them apart. Eh? Ah, then I meant Marumine... えっ!? んじゃ マルマインっつうことで…。
Audience Member What a fake! It can't transform at all! Stop screwing around! If it's a Metamon, it should Transform properly! ふざけんな! メタモンなら しっかり変身しろ!!

11:35

Script Error

Meowth says the boss will make him top cat again but Nyarth just says the journey was hard.

Meowth: And the boss'll make me top cat again.
Nyarth: It was a long, painful journey.
(ニャース): 長く つらい道のりだったニャー。
12:00

Script Error

James in the English dub makes a reference to the fact that they haven't been able to catch Dratini. The episode The Legend of Miniryu (ミニリュウのでんせつ) was skipped in the English dub though.

James: Become Dratini, the Pokémon we've never been able to capture. It would make a handsome gift for the boss. Sir, we've finally captured Dratini, that legendary Pokémon.
Kojiro: If you turned into the legendary Miniryu we got hurt trying to get a while back, we could present it to the boss! Boss, we have finally captured the legendary Miniryu.
(コジロウ): いつぞや ゲットし損ねた 伝説のミニリュウに化けてくれりゃあボスに献上できるってもんよ!! ボス 我ら ついに 伝説のミニリュウを捕まえました。

13:13

Scene Cut

Nyarth's dialog was cut in the English dub.

Nyarth: My eyes are spinning again!

13:32

Script Error

Musashi tells Metamon that it won't ever go home if it doesn't Transform properly but Jessie says she'll turn it into jelly.

Jessie: You'd better transform perfectly this time or I'll transform you into jelly!
Musashi: This time, if you don't Transform perfectly you'll never go back home again!
(ムサシ): 今度こそ ビシッと完璧に変身しないと二度と 家に帰してやんないかんね!
14:15

Script Error

Kasumi notes that Satoshi has got a bit more mature with his comment but Misty just thinks Ash has been studying.

Misty: Sounds like you've been studying, Ash.
Kasumi: He grew up a little.
(カスミ): ちょっとは成長したんだ~。
15:20

Culture Reference

Takeshi calls their group the Pocket Gang (ポケット団) while Brock just says they are part of Team Rocket. Imite says she's a guest but Duplica just copies Meowth's "That's right!" line. Kasumi says 'protagonists' instead of 'villains'. Satoshi says penetrate the justice of "Love" and "Truth" to which Kojiro passionately objects to right after the motto by saying it's "evil" of "Love" and "Truth"! "Evil"! The rest of the motto is pretty much the same as how Team Rocket/Rocket Gang does it in their respective versions.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash Prepare for trouble. If you ask about whatever... 何だかんだと聞かれたら!
Takeshi And make it double double. Our answer will be the earth's compassion! 答えてあげるが 世の情け!
Kasumi To protect the world from devastation. To prevent the world's destruction! 世界の破壊を防ぐため!

Scene Cut

The original airing of this episode ended with a preview for the next episode in line, "Computer Solider Porygon". Due to this episode being removed from rotation after its first and only broadcast, later airings would just end the episode with no preview at all. When TV channel Kids Station picked up the series in 2005, they received a re-edited version with various changes made, most notably various visual edits to the opening theme. The new version of this episode made for Kids Station includes a specially-made preview for what is the next episode in the new lineup, "The Pikachu Forest". All other outlets would still offer the originally edited version of the episode, with no next episode preview at all.

When the original Pocket Monsters anime was added to Hulu Japan, most of the episodes made available were the initially aired version, complete with all scenes and errors that would be changed or corrected in later runs. Their version of this episode thus included the preview for episode 38. Also note that while most other official sources act as if "Computer Solider Porygon" doesn't exist, Hulu labels "Metamon and the Copycat Girl" as episode 37 and "The Pikachu Forest" as episode 39, with no "episode 38" being offered. This is the first time the anime itself has acknowledged this episode since it was pulled back in 1998.

Written Biographies for Characters in Episode:
Duplica - {{Char=Duplica}} introduced herself as from the House of Imitay which is known for imitating. {{Char=Duplica}} likes to dress up and change into costumes so she can imitate people like {{Char=Jenny}} and {{Char=Joy}}. {{Char=Duplica}} explained to {{Char=Ash}} and his friends that she wants to become the greatest Ditto Master and a big star, not a Pokémon Master like {{Char=Ash}}. {{Char=Duplica}} is known for her perky and curious personality. She also has a large wardrobe of clothes that she uses as costumes so she can transform her looks.

When {{Char=Ash}} and his friends first met {{Char=Duplica}}, she was training her Ditto which was having problems transforming perfectly. Her Imitehouse theater wasn't getting any patrons because they didn't want to see a Ditto that couldn't transform perfectly. Team Rocket appeared and stole {{Char=D-Ditto}} and tried to get it to transform. It wasn't until {{Char=Meowth}} threatened to use its claw on {{Char=D-Ditto}} that it finally was able to transform properly. {{Char=D-Ditto}} tried to transform again and was able to transform perfectly from that point on.

{{Char=Duplica}} reopened the Imitehouse theater after her Ditto could transform perfectly in the hopes that passing travelers would visit and watch her act with her Ditto.

Duplica's Ditto - {{Char=Ash}} and his friends first encountered {{Char=D-Ditto}} when they ran into Imitehouse to get out of the rain. {{Char=Ash}}'s attention quickly turned to a 'Pikachu' noise behind him and he was surprised to see another Pikachu beside his own {{Char=Pikachu}}. {{Char=Misty}} thought the 'Pikachu' was cute and she picked it only to be surprised by its odd looking face. {{Char=Misty}} quickly dropped {{Char=D-Ditto}} as she didn't know what's wrong with the Pikachu. {{Char=Brock}}'s first reaction was that it was new kind of Pikachu after he examined it and {{Char=Ash}} tried to capture it but {{Char=Duplica}} stopped him by throwing a Poke ball at his Poke ball.
